As a student in Construction Management, the importance of firsthand experience in the construction industry should not be taken lightly. The responsibility of every construction manager is to learn how to take a project from concept to reality. The primary five elements of construction management entail project programming, design development, material specifications, estimating, and scheduling. Les travaux de fouilles en tranchée exposent les travailleurs à de nombreux risques. L’éboulement est le risque le plus grave et le plus fréquent présent pendant ces travaux, mais hélas, il est très souvent sous-estimé, alors qu’un éboulement mineur de moins d’un mètre cube de terre peut blesser mortellement un travailleur. Une analyse de 50 rapports d’accidents graves et mortels de la Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST), survenus entre mai 1974 et juin 2017 lors de travaux d’excavation et de fouilles en tranchées, montre qu’il y a eu 48 décès …

In the past decade, infrastructure resilience in the U.S. has become critical due to increasing disruptions to the built environment and the resultant consequences on economic, social, and environmental goals. This attention to resilience research is drawn to investigating the ability of existing structures and facilities to resist and recover from natural and human-caused hazards. From a broader view, resilience also applies to processes, such as infrastructure project delivery processes. Objective: To illustrate the development and implementation of a statewide construction workforce training program between the state, industry, and university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: Over the last 20 years, there has been a statewide construction workforce shortage, which not only creates an imbalance on the demands in this sector but impairs the profitability of Wyoming-based construction companies. Method: The team developed and implemented an online training platform, consisting of five modules, in support of training for construction companies and their workers across the state. Facility managers are often faced with building system procurement or replacement decisions, requiring them to select a system from among competitive manufacturers. Total cost of ownership (TCO) criteria, informed by built assets in operation in the manager’s portfolio, provides some information to select the right asset manufacturer. However, managers must also consider technical performance to complete a more comprehensive analysis. Performance can be calculated using asset parameters like condition, age, and variation in condition to aid in TCO assessments. This paper presents the results of a case study conducted to evaluate the potential benefit of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, as a tool to improve the bridge inspection workflow. The study conducted two experiments to determine how well deficiencies could be detected using a UAS. Both experiments were conducted using the same test bridge. The first experiment was carried out by the bridge inspection engineers (BIEs), who had previously inspected the bridge using traditional methods. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Current Population Survey, nearly 90 percent of the 10.7 million people employed in the construction industry are white males (2021). This statistic will remain unchanged unless more minorities and females are recruited into the industry. For craft workers, a primary recruitment mechanism is the registered apprenticeship program. This study analyzes the U.S. Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeship Database (RAPIDs) from 2000 to 2019 to identify trends for new apprentices. Previous research indicates that air quality near the cabs of nonroad diesel equipment may exceed recommended exposure limits for certain pollutants. The objective of this case study was to collect and analyze air pollutant data near the cabs of nonroad diesel equipment while performing real world activities. Using state-of-the-art instrumentation, the research team conducted 24 tests on nine different items of nonroad equipment. The team collected data related to pollutant concentrations of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, and black carbon.
