Robust Model Development For Evaluation Of Existing Structures, Saurabh Prabhu
All Dissertations
In the context of scientific computing, validation aims to determine the worthiness of a model in supporting critical decision making. This determination must occur given the imperfections in the mathematical representation resulting from the unavoidable idealizations of physics phenomena. Uncertainty in parameter values furthers the validation problems due to the inevitable lack of information about material properties, boundary conditions, loads, etc. which must be taken into account in making predictions about structural response. The determination of worthiness then becomes assessing whether an unavoidably imperfect mathematical model, subjected to poorly known input parameters, can predict sufficiently well in its intended purpose. …

Economic Feasibility And Increased Sustainability Of Short Span Arch Culvert, Rafsan Jani Rafi
Theses and Dissertations
Short span box culverts are widely used for stream flow passing throughout the State of Arkansas. Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) has standard box culverts ranging from 4 ft to 12 ft in span to use for individual box culvert combination. This study is strictly for culverts with a total span range from 10 ft to 30 ft. To achieve more than 12 ft culvert span, AHTD uses different combinations of standard box culverts. As a result, the clear span becomes smaller and may cause higher debris accumulation near the culvert openings. The goal of this study is …

Corrosion Of Steel In Submerged Concrete Structures, Michael Thomas Walsh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This investigation determined that severe corrosion of steel can occur in the submerged portions of reinforced concrete structures in marine environments. Field studies of decommissioned pilings from actual bridges revealed multiple instances of strong corrosion localization, showing appreciable local loss of steel cross-section. Quantitative understanding of the phenomenon and its causes was developed and articulated in the form of a predictive model. The predictive model output was consistent with both the corrosion rate estimates and the extent of corrosion localization observed in the field observations. The most likely explanation for the observed phenomena that emerged from the understanding and modeling …

This paper presents a case study of how the adoption of BIM-based practices in the AECO industry is being reflected by cultural change in higher education in Ireland. The silo-mentality that has dominated the AECO sector for more than a century has, despite numerous reorganisations, been replicated in the structures of educational institutions, including in Dublin Institute of Technology since the inception of its founding colleges in the late 1800s. Most AECO programmes must include content that is external to the programme’s specific discipline. Through the School structures of the Institute, delivery of such content is known as "service teaching" …

Stochastic Rainfall-Runoff Model With Explicit Soil Moisture Dynamics, Mark Bartlett, E. Daly, Jeffrey Mcdonnell, Anthony J. Parolari, Amilcare Porporato
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Stream runoff is perhaps the most poorly represented process in ecohydrological stochastic soil moisture models. Here we present a rainfall-runoff model with a new stochastic description of runoff linked to soil moisture dynamics. We describe the rainfall-runoff system as the joint probability density function (PDF) of rainfall, soil moisture and runoff forced by random, instantaneous jumps of rainfall. We develop a master equation for the soil moisture PDF that accounts explicitly for a general state-dependent rainfall-runoff transformation. This framework is then used to derive the joint rainfall-runoff and soil moisture-runoff PDFs. Runoff is initiated by a soil moisture threshold and …

The joints of the human body act as mechanical or building structures joints. Joints connect different segments by enabling the movement of these segments. The design of a joint that provides durability or static support differs from that one which provides only movement. Joints of the human body, as organic joints, are considered more complex than other types of joints. Finite element models help to comprehend the knee structure behavior under the action of dynamic and static loads. Deformations in the articulating cartilage and the distribution of loads from meniscus provide data to understand the effect of loads in different …
