General Aviation Airport Runway Incursions: A Qualitative Approach To Examining Reasons For, Barriers To Addressing, And Lessons Learned From Airport Managers' First-Hand Experiences, Indira Maharaj
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was manifold: (a) to understand the reasons for runway incursions (RIs) at general aviation (GA) airports, (b) to describe the barriers to addressing runway incursions at GA airports, and (c) to describe the lessons learned from addressing runway incursions at GA airports. This study was based primarily on a phenomenological research design, which led to a set of inductively derived conjectures. The study’s sample consisted of 10 GA airports that had at least 10 times the number of GA operations than the number of air carrier (commercial) operations as reported in the Air Traffic Activity …

Few studies have been conducted that have truly considered the relevance and inadequacies of applicable aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) regulations. Fewer still have studied and explored accident cases that directly exemplify the deficiencies and inconsistencies of various regulatory standards and requirements. This study seeks to expose and explain those inadequacies by utilizing a historical, case-study type research method to examine accident cases during which time the governing regulations played a significant role in the ARFF operations. The findings discovered as a result of this multi-case analysis provide evidence that the current regulations governing United States ARFF operations are both …
An Exploratory Study Of Us Navy T-45c Simulation Training,

An Exploratory Study Of Us Navy T-45c Simulation Training, Aaron D. Judy Ed.D., Tom Gollery Ed.D.
Journal of Applied Social Science Research and Practice
Flight training is costly and workload intensive. According to a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, the US Navy and US Air Force predict a 25% shortage of fighter pilots by 2023 (GAO, 2018). The military needs empirical research to determine the effectiveness of flight simulation training and whether simulation training can decrease the overall training time for student pilots. The purpose of this study was to compare intermediate and advanced military student pilots’ scores on the T-45C OFT simulator training events and scores on the T-45C aircraft training events in four training domains; the intervention in this study included …

Assessing Cultural Drivers Of Safety Resilience In A Collegiate Aviation Program, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum, Marcos Fernandez Tous
Aviation Faculty Publications
Organizational safety resilience is a key factor in sustaining an effective safety management system (SMS) in high-reliability organizations (HROs) such as aviation. Extant research advocates for monitoring, assessing and continuously improving safety in an organization that has a fully-functional SMS. Safety resilience provides a buffer against vulnerabilities. Extant research also suggests a paucity in terms of a measurement framework for organizational safety resilience in collegiate aviation operations. A quantitative approach using Reason’s safety resilience concept (Reason, 2011) is used to assess organizational safety resilience in a collegiate aviation program with an active conformance SMS accepted by the FAA. A sample …

Evaluating Scenarios That Can Startle And Surprise Pilots, Rahim Daud Agha
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Startle and surprise on the flight deck is a contributing factor in multiple aviation accidents that have been recognized by multiple aviation safety boards. This study identified the effects startle and surprise had on commercial pilots with single and multiengine ratings. Surprise is defined here as something unexpected (e.g., engine failure), while startle is the associated exaggerated effect of an unexpected condition (e.g., thunder sound). Forty pilots were tested in a basic aviation training device configured to a Cessna 172 (single-engine) and a Baron 58 (multi-engine). Each pilot flew the single- and multiengine aircraft in a scenario that induced an …

Does The Use Of Simulation Significantly Impact Students’ Perceptions Of Their Air Traffic Control Knowledge And Skill?, Meron Lindenfeld, Jeanne Radigan, Michael Figuccio
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Simulation has served as an instructional supplement in education and training within various fields such as nursing, business, and flight training. Prior research studies have documented its usefulness. Simulation-based lessons have also been used for air traffic control (ATC) training, but little research has been conducted on the usefulness of simulation in this application. This study measured the level of influence that ATC simulation had on students’ perception of their ATC knowledge and skill level and their commitment to a career in ATC.
Data were collected by surveying students at four institutions of higher education after they completed ATC courses …

Pilot Source Study 2018: Five Years After The Foq Rule—New-Hire First Officer Backgrounds And Their Performance In Us Regional Airline Training, Guy M. Smith, Maryjo O. Smith, Troy E. Techau, Michelle P. Hight
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
After the Pilot Source Study (PSS) 2015 was published, there was concern that the data were collected too soon after the First Officer Qualification Rule compliance date. The Collaborative Research Committee of the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) voted to undertake the PSS 2018 to determine whether the results of the PSS 2015 were still valid. In fall 2018, five research teams collected 9,776 pilot records from five regional airlines and analyzed these data. In the PSS 2018, the criteria for success were: ≥90% completions and ≤1 extra training event. In rank order, the following pilots were most successful in …
Aircraft Leading Edge Strakes On Conventional Naca Wings,

Aircraft Leading Edge Strakes On Conventional Naca Wings, Anthony Pirone
Discovery Day - Prescott
The prevention of stall on aircraft wings has been a great challenge over the history of airplanes. As the aircraft become more and more complex, it becomes harder to fit high lift devices and leading-edge devices onto high camber, supercritical airfoil aircraft wings. In the fighter jet class of aircraft the obstacle of stall is usually delayed by the implementation of leading-edge root extensions or strakes. Strakes create a tip vortice along the sharp leading edge that transitions over the surface of the wing preventing separation on both the upper and lower surface of the wing allowing the fighter jet …

Communication Status Of Aircraft And Near Midair Collision Occurrences, H. E. Mcnevin
Graduate Student Works
The purpose of this research is to examine instances of near mid-air collision (NMAC) in order to determine if the number of instances of traffic conflictions resulting in near mid-air collision situations while in contact with air traffic control is rising over the last decade. Midair collision and near midair collision situations between aircraft operating while at least one is talking to air traffic control (ATC) present a hazard to safety and with the potential for a deadly encounter that results in loss of life and damage to property. Situations such as this in the National Airspace System (NAS) involve …

This research identifies key state and local government stakeholders in California for drone policy creation and implementation, and describes their perceptions and understanding of drone policy. The investigation assessed stakeholders’ positions, interests, and influence on issues, with the goal of providing potential policy input to achieve successful drone integration in urban environments and within the national airspace of the United States. The research examined regulatory priorities through the use of a two-tiered Stakeholder Analysis Process. The first tier consisted of a detailed survey sent out to over 450 local agencies and jurisdictions in California. The second tier consisted of an …

Alaska Part 135 Operations: The Need For Additional Regulatory Oversight And Continuous Aircraft Tracking, April A. Larsen
Student Works
With a focus on Alaska, this research illustrates the lack of regulatory oversight pertaining to Title 14 CFR Part 135 operators, including SMS, training, and equipment requirements. As of January 2020, under the Federal Aviation Administration’s NextGen initiative, all aircraft flying in controlled airspace are required to have an Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS– B) system installed and operational. Many Alaskan operators fly in hazardous terrain, and marginal weather, with little to no communication, yet ADS-B is not a requirement as they are in uncontrolled airspace. Alaska also lacks vital aviation infrastructure including adequate instrument approach procedures, weather monitoring …
