Promoting Pleasure In Reading Through Sustained Silent Reading: A Self-Study Of Teacher Practices, Kimberly Turley McKell 2018 Brigham Young University

Promoting Pleasure In Reading Through Sustained Silent Reading: A Self-Study Of Teacher Practices, Kimberly Turley Mckell

Theses and Dissertations

According to a survey, the majority of fourth grade students in 2005 did not choose reading as a preferred activity for entertainment (Guthrie, McRae, & Klauda, 2007). Adolescents are increasingly resistant to reading and seldom list it as a pleasurable activity. Interestingly, research shows that students who enjoy reading more do better academically (Gambrell, 2011). Accordingly, as a teacher I seek to increase students' reading for pleasure. To give space in my curriculum for students to do this and for me to support them, I used Sustained Silent Reading (SSR), a practice where students are given time to read a …

Examining The Meaning Of Course Evaluation, Tyesha Stewart 2018 Stephen F. Austin State University

Examining The Meaning Of Course Evaluation, Tyesha Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teaching evaluations significantly influence faculty members’ annual evaluations and progress toward tenure and promotion within academic programs in higher education. Those with consistently strong, positive, teaching evaluations have been deemed effective instructors and often validated with increases in salary, teaching awards, and promotion and tenure. This is especially the case when strong course evaluations are received in addition to documented scholarship and research activities and positively evaluated professional service. However, questions are being raised about the meaningfulness of students' ratings of course instruction. Do these measures effectively assess competence as instructors or do they measure other unknown processes in the …

The backdrop for this study is the current anti-immigrant climate, specifically targeting Latinx undocumented immigrants. Educators in the San Diego County are working in a context where immigration authorities are deporting their students’ family members. Our aim is to begin painting a picture of who these educators are and some of the practices they employ to support their undocumented students. We hope our findings will begin to support educators and in turn their students.

PjBL can increase problem solving abilities of students. Data analysis was obtained from students' pretest and post test results using SPSS. Based on the analysis of one path anova obtained F-count 168.86 with P-value (0.000 <0.05) which means there is a very significant difference of problem-solving ability between experiment class and control class. The average score of experimental class problem-solving abilities is higher than the control class. Students are still having difficulties at the Specific Application of Physics and Logical Progression.

Problem-solving skills are important for students to cope with rapid changes in society and supported by technological advances. Problem-solving skills that students have especially in Newton's Law materials need to be improved so that it becomes like an expert problem solver. Therefore, SSCS problem solving research with CPS is done to determine its effect on problem solving skills. This research uses one group pretest-posttest design. The results showed that the learning model has an influence on problem-solving skills with strong effectiveness, but the improvement of problem solving skills is still low.
