Publishing Simplified: A High-Impact Productive Disruption, Kyle Morgan, Morgan Barker

Cal Poly Humboldt Library

Teaching the Publishing Process for Student Self-Efficacy:

The HSU Library and Academic Technology implemented a workshop on campus to demystify the elements of publishing a scholarly article from start to finish. The tutorial provided support to students, staff, new lecturers, and librarians at every stage of the research cycle. Even those who did not yet have a research project could experience a guided, hands-on introduction that allowed them to find their path in the abundant opportunities in academic publishing. The instructors provided students both a face-to-face and online experience to work through the publishing process.

Changing Pre-Service Teachers’ Beliefs About Prevalent Brain-Based Myths In Education, Megan Sparks 2018 Western Kentucky University

Changing Pre-Service Teachers’ Beliefs About Prevalent Brain-Based Myths In Education, Megan Sparks

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study examined if a conceptual change intervention would decrease pre-service teachers’ beliefs in four prevalent brain-based myths in education, including Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic (VAK) learning styles, Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory, left- or right-brained hemispheric dominance, and that humans only use 10% of their brains. Participants included 87 college students from one large, comprehensive university who were enrolled in an educational psychology course. All participants received the conceptual change intervention, which consisted of reading an article refuting the brain-based myths, submitting a paper showcasing evaluative thinking and reflection about the brain-based myths, and discussing cognitive development and the brain-based myths in …

Habits Of Mind In An Uncertain World, Craig Gibson, Trudi E. Jacobson

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The current political and cultural polarization in the United States and other countries has significant implications for all educational institutions and for libraries and librarians. The interrelated issues of trust, credibility, and authority now present major challenges because of the uncertainty of the social media environment, competing information “bubbles,” and enduring cognitive biases. The accelerating fragmentation of the media and information ecosystems undermines communal understanding of large and complex issues that citizens must face. To address this profound societal challenge, academic librarians should collaborate with faculty members to create communities of inquiry for students—sustained “high impact practices” that address the …

Student-centered learning (SCL) represents a growing trend in higher education that emphasizes active learning strategies in lieu of more traditional passive strategies such as lecture. This study explores different techniques under the rubric of SCL to evaluate the utility of selected tools to enhance student knowledge and student learning. Specifically, this study tests the use of student portfolios, flipped classrooms, digital learning strategies, and problem-based learning to enhance a student’s learning experience. Originating as a collaborative effort from a university faculty learning community, this study includes a multi-disciplinary look at the effects of SCL approaches in the fields of aviation, …

Anatomy Of Stem Teaching In North American Universities, Paul J. Wendel, Kathryn M. Plank, Anna M. Young

Faculty Articles

A large body of evidence demonstrates that strategies that promote student interactions and cognitively engage students with content (1) lead to gains in learning and attitudinal outcomes for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses (1, 2). Many educational and governmental bodies have called for and supported adoption of these student-centered strategies throughout the undergraduate STEM curriculum. But to the extent that we have pictures of the STEM undergraduate instructional landscape, it has mostly been provided through self-report surveys of faculty members, within a particular STEM discipline [e.g., (3–6)]. …

Participants will be empowered with strategies to foster student success through active, meaningful …

Passing The Baton To Future Leaders: Faculty To Teacher Leaders To Students, Valerie Harlow Shinas, Judith Zorfass 2018 Lesley University

Passing The Baton To Future Leaders: Faculty To Teacher Leaders To Students, Valerie Harlow Shinas, Judith Zorfass

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

In this session, the authors will share a shift in an understanding of their role. This has led to an emerging model of cascading leadership, in which the leadership process can be developed and passed on from course instructor to graduate students—and ultimately, to the students they teach. Like the passing of the baton from one runner to the next, faculty who are aware of their own expanded leadership roles become better able to empower tomorrow’s teacher and student leaders.

Their work is based on the required, 3-credit course redesigned and taught by the authors, Perspectives of Literacy, Teaching, and …

Metacognition At The Program For The Advancement Of Learning, Philip Hulbig

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

This is a pilot study of metacognition, and how it is defined and utilized by practitioners at Curry College's Program for the Advancement of Learning (PAL) in Milton, Massachusetts. Presently there are several distinct approaches to metacognitive practice in education, pulling from different traditions. Examples are Self Regulated Learning Theory (Bandura, 1997, Zimmerman & Schunk, 2001), which focuses on behavioral problem-solving strategies and their uses, psycho-dynamic developmental approaches (Kegan, 1996), the self-talk approaches of Mindset Theory (Dweck, 2008), dialectic approaches (Montgomery & Baxter 1998) of philosophical traditions (Popper, 1945), and contemplative mindfulness approaches (Gautam, 1999). Educationally these approaches to metacognition …

Supporting Social Justice Literacy In Student Affairs And Higher Education Graduate Preparation Programs, Kristin I. Mccann

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

This study highlights a promising practice for learning and teaching in social justice or diversity courses in graduate preparation programs (GPPs). In these contexts, pedagogical approaches that both challenge and support students’ understanding of core concepts of social justice curriculum. Novel to the social justice courses in this study was a two-part photo project wherein students from dominant and non-dominant identity groups benefitted from the curriculum. Interpretations are based on qualitative data from students and faculty in a required social justice course in a GPP. Findings are presented through an imperfect narrative among study participants.

The Prestigious And The Predatory: Helping Online Students Navigate Open Education Source In A World Of "Fake News", Kathleen Hohenleitner Phd, James Campbell Phd, John Raible Ma

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Teaching early literature students to conduct research online poses a challenge when students encounter Open Education Resources. Some are predatory, published for profit, and not well vetted. Others are highly credible and perfectly appropriate for use in student essays. An instructional designer and two faculty members collaborated to design a module to help English literature students think critically about the online sources they find and how to best participate in the existing literary conversation.
