Sacred Heart University’s OER initiative has seen positive results in its first stage of planning and implementation. Five factors have been driving change – tactical planning, collaborative networking, awareness building, impact measurement, and pedagogy focus. Using evidence-based examples, we share strategies for cost-savings, increased access, and enhanced pedagogical practices.

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence
Gamification is an emerging topic for both student engagement and motivation in higher education online courses as digital natives become post-secondary students. This design case considers the design, development, and implementation of a higher education online course using the ARCS model for motivational design combined with the four-phase model of interest development as a framework for gamification implementation. Through “designerly ways of knowing,” this design case explores engaging digital native students with a gamified online course design, which will be of interest to instructional designers and instructors in higher education. SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Two new inorganic-based photosensitizer dyes of rhenium(I) attached to retinoid/carotenoid ligands have been synthesized. All ligands were prepared via Knoevenagel condensation reactions of all-trans-retinal (1) and β-apo-8’- carotenal with cyanopyridyl. Electronic UV/Visible absorption spectroscopy shows that these complexes absorb visible light efficiently. Absorption wavelengths are in the 450 nm to 600 nm range. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the frontier molecular orbitals involved during absorption process occur from the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) to low-energy LUMOs (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) of the Re metal center. SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The Easterlin paradox suggests that a greater level of economic prosperity does not translate into more happiness for a society. We investigate this paradox using a methodology new to this literature called quantile regression (QR) analysis. We find evidence that aggregate income is statistically related to a nation’s average level of happiness, but (i) the magnitude of this relationship is relatively modest, and (ii) greater levels of income bring about smaller and smaller increases in a nation’s happiness. These results provide a more nuanced understanding of the empirical support for and against the Easterlin paradox.

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Dorothy L. Sayers is rarely considered to be an author of mythopoeic literature or one whose own writings contain the metaphors or allegories of myth and legend. Yet, as a young adult at Oxford University, Sayers produced a variety of poems that, centering upon Oxford and her experiences as a student, explored mythic themes as they related to the university. Her early poems, written while an undergraduate at Oxford and directly afterward, were built upon three motifs: classical mythology, mediaeval legend, and Christian romanticism.
