Structured Professional Development For Academic Developers: A Collaborative Approach, Fiona O'Riordan, Íde O'Sullivan, Mary Fitzpatrick, Margaret Keane, Claire Mcavinia, Angelica Risquez

Journal Articles

This paper shares the experience of a group of academic developers’ engagement in collaboratively working towards the completion of an online open-access professional development (PD) course designed to support higher education teachers to engage with a new professional development framework. Committee members of the Educational Developers in Ireland Network set out to complete the course as a demonstration of their commitment to their own PD and to experience the process with a view to becoming facilitators of the course. An auto-ethnographic approach was used to capture this experience, and findings demonstrate an inspiring alternative to PD that supports academic developers …

Publications and Research

Open Educational Resources (OERs) offer a free, viable alternative to costly textbooks. The authors share their experience and advice on finding and writing online content, creating an online platform for the content, finding videos and other resources, and working with an appropriate free online homework system to match the written content. In addition, the implementation and suggestions for practitioners are discussed. At the end of the article, the bibliography contains two OERs freely available under an open commons license, one for Intermediate Algebra, the other for Mathematics for Elementary Education.

Acue Course Has Applications Beyond The Classroom, Jo Anna Grant

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

ACUE’s Course in Effective Teaching Practices takes faculty beyond learning proven practices to impact student learning to implementing them and reflecting on the experience. For faculty taking the course, but not teaching at the time, many of the practices can be implemented in setting besides the classroom such as in department meetings or in staff development trainings.

When I took ACUE’s Course in Effective Teaching Practices, I was directing our campus center for teaching and learning and providing professional development for faculty, but not teaching students. Since the Course requires learning about and implementing new practices, I had to get …

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Excerpt

When I first learned that my institution, Nova Southeastern University (NSU), was acquiring Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education (ELTHE), I was immediately struck by two seemingly disparate emotions: elation and apprehension. On one hand, I was grateful for the opportunity to join the journal as Managing Editor, especially since I revel in overseeing a prospective author’s writing process. It is such an amazing experience assisting authors with their ideas and watching as an initial node of thought materializes on the page, enduring and withstanding countless drafting, revising, and editing suggestions, before finally arriving at its final form. …
