Family Medical Leave Act: The Impacts On Family Relationships, Jaycie J. Case, Jennifer Newquist 2019 Stephen F Austin State University

Family Medical Leave Act: The Impacts On Family Relationships, Jaycie J. Case, Jennifer Newquist

School of Human Sciences Research Showcase

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) authorizes eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons (H.R. 1, 1993). This policy allows for a total of 12-weeks of leave within a 12-month period. While this may be sufficient in terms of time off, it is still unpaid. Compared to other nations, the United States still lags behind on providing benefits and protections for employees who have taken on the role of caretaker (Arellano, 2015). This white paper will explain how employees benefit from paid maternity/paternity and family medical leave.

University President Compensation: A Complex Examination Of Its Determinants And Consequences, Sheila Keener 2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

University President Compensation: A Complex Examination Of Its Determinants And Consequences, Sheila Keener

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examined the controversy surrounding the high levels of compensation paid to university presidents. To do this, the first half of this dissertation includes a systematic review of the existing literature regarding the relation between university performance and university president compensation in nonprofit universities. The second half of this dissertation attempts to replicate the findings from the systematic review with more current data. Several gaps identified in the literature, including the effects of analyzing specific compensation components, the effect of university president compensation on subsequent university performance, potential nonlinear relations, and how relations between university performance and university president …

Canines At The Company, Felines At The Factory: The Risks And Rewards Of Incorporating Service Animals And Companion Animals Into The Workplace, Rebecca J. Huss

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

With unemployment rates at historically low levels, the ability of an employer to attract and retain productive employees is key to a company’s success. Simultaneously, the percentage of persons in the United States with disabilities is increasing. Additionally, many persons without disabilities consider allowing companion animals at work a valuable employee benefit. This Article focuses on the legal and workplace implications of incorporating service animals and companion animals at work.

This Article begins by analyzing when an employer must accommodate a request by an employee with a disability to be accompanied by a service animal at work under the Americans …

Evaluating Kentucky State Pension Plans In The 2000s And Best Practices Moving Forward, Sarah Alegria 2019 University of Kentucky

Evaluating Kentucky State Pension Plans In The 2000s And Best Practices Moving Forward, Sarah Alegria

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Commonwealth of Kentucky sponsors three different pension retirement systems. This includes Kentucky Employee Retirement System, Teacher’s Retirement System, and Kentucky’s Judicial Form of Retirement System. Kentucky has one of the worst funded pension retirement plans and is currently facing shortfalls of about $43 billion (PEW, 2013). Between 1998-2008, Commonwealth of Kentucky’s legislators made many detrimental policy decisions that negatively affected its Pension Retirement System. The most impacting includes:

  • Enhancements of Benefits in the Nineties
  • Changing Final Compensation from the average of five-years to the average of three-years
  • Mandated Yearly Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA)
  • Not requiring the State to …

Are Women Executives Hurting Firm Performance? An Examination Of Gender Diversity On Firm Risk, Performance, And Executive Compensation, Krystal Diane Sung 2019 Claremont McKenna College

Are Women Executives Hurting Firm Performance? An Examination Of Gender Diversity On Firm Risk, Performance, And Executive Compensation, Krystal Diane Sung

CMC Senior Theses

In order to assess the continuing imbalance of top executives between genders, I examine the effects of gender diversity within top management teams on firm risk, performance, and executive compensation. Capitalizing on previous analysis, I apply three unique differentiators. First, I utilize current data from 2012 to 2017 from Compustat, CRSP, and ExecuComp. Second, I provide a unique subset view on a firm and individual performance of female CEOs to examine executive compensation. Third, my scope of analysis expands to S&P Composite 1500 companies. I use separate models to estimate the effect of gender diversity on firm risk by examining …

Founding Conditions And Benefit Offerings: Evidence From U.S. Startups, Xiang Yi, Yang Xu

Research, Publications & Creative Work

  • Purpose: This paper tries to answer the following research question: At the time of founding of a startup, what entrepreneurial conditions would influence the long-term offerings of HR benefits? To answer this question, our study examines the effects of four founding conditions of startups – total assets, founder’s education, industry experience and startup experience –on the basis of the resource-based view of firms.
  • Design/methodology/approach: Using data from the Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS) conducted in the period 2005-2010, this paper analyzed the relationships between the founding conditions and the offering of HR benefits by 4148 new ventures during the first five …

"Flaw-Backs:" Executive Compensation Clawbacks And Their Costly Flaw, Connor Douglas Maag 2018 Pepperdine University

"Flaw-Backs:" Executive Compensation Clawbacks And Their Costly Flaw, Connor Douglas Maag

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

Saving money should not be expensive. Compensation “clawbacks” are a legal mechanism for companies to reclaim employee compensation, but the legislative framework is complex and disorganized. There are four primary federal claw-back provisions: Sarbanes-Oxley § 304, Dodd-Frank § 954, 12 U.S.C.A. § 5221(TARP), and Dodd-Frank § 956—as well as voluntary contractual clawback policies. This comment untangles the web of clawback legislation by overlaying each clawback mechanism to extract a single, clear, and concise description of executive compensation clawbacks, called the “Comprehensive Clawback Coverage.” The Comprehensive Clawback Coverage reveals a major flaw in the legal and regulatory framework: clawbacks increase agency …

Behind The Student Loan Debt Crisis, New Benefits Solutions, Sarah Min 2018 Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism

Behind The Student Loan Debt Crisis, New Benefits Solutions, Sarah Min

Capstones

Two years ago, when Scott Thompson took over tech startup Tuition.io as chief executive officer in 2016, he felt as though he had to educate his clients about his product — a new benefit, managed by his software company that allows employers to help their employees repay their student loans.

Today, he doesn’t feel that need. When he recently walked into a Fortune 20 company with a stack of documents, his prospective clients said they understood his pitch and hardly required the introductory material. “I don’t evangelize anymore. We very rarely educate any longer,” Thompson said.

When Tuition.io was founded …

Incentives: Achieving Business Results With The Right Pay Scheme, Fermin Diez

Asian Management Insights

Achieving business results with the right pay scheme.

Much has been said both for and against using incentives to drive business results—be it revenue and profit, or market share. Despite this, there is surprisingly little research, particularly in Asia, to guide practitioners on how different pay models affect decisions that lead to better company performance.

Can Maternity Benefits Have Long-Term Effects On Childbearing? Evidence From Soviet Russia, Olga Malkova 2018 University of Kentucky

Can Maternity Benefits Have Long-Term Effects On Childbearing? Evidence From Soviet Russia, Olga Malkova

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper quantifies the effects of Russia’s 1981 expansion in maternity benefits on completed childbearing. The program provided one year of partially paid parental leave and a small cash transfer upon a child’s birth. I exploit the program’s two-stage implementation and find evidence that women had more children as a result of the program. Fertility rates rose immediately by 8.2% over twelve months. The increase in fertility rates not only persisted for the ten-year duration of the program, but it reflected large increases in higher-order births to older women who already had children before the program started.

A Third Class Of Worker: The Dependent Contractor, Lisa J. Fendrick 2018 Gettysburg College

A Third Class Of Worker: The Dependent Contractor, Lisa J. Fendrick

Student Publications

The following research paper is intended to address the worker classification issue that has intensified due to the rise of the gig economy. After reviewing the current literature on the subject, it will be made clear that a change must be made to the binary classification system that is used in the United States, and to the methods used to categorize workers within the system. This paper proposes the addition of a ‘dependent contractor’ category, which would be a subcategory of employee, and would fall between independent contractor and employee in terms of what benefits they would be entitled to. …

The Industry And Occupation Incidence Of State Mandated Maternity Benefits, Adam Bahr 2018 Utah State University

The Industry And Occupation Incidence Of State Mandated Maternity Benefits, Adam Bahr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Government mandates are often used to promote equality in the workplace, often imposing additional costs upon employers. Economic theory suggest that these additional costs will be shifted onto the employees through a reduction in wages. However, when wage shifting is not an option due to anti-discrimination laws, how will employers respond to the additional costs imposed? Gruber (1994) found that wage shifting occurs when the groups benefiting from a government mandate are easily identifiable to the employer, despite the existence of anti-discrimination laws.

This study seeks to further the work of Gruber (1994) and examine wage shifting at an industry …

Striving To Earn More: A Survey Of Work Strategies And Tool Use Among Crowd Workers, Toni KAPLAN, Susumu SAITO, Kotaro HARA, Jeffrey P. BIGHAM 2018 Carnegie Mellon University

Striving To Earn More: A Survey Of Work Strategies And Tool Use Among Crowd Workers, Toni Kaplan, Susumu Saito, Kotaro Hara, Jeffrey P. Bigham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Earning money is a primary motivation for workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk, but earning a good wage is difficult because work that pays well is not easily identified and can be time-consuming to find. We explored the strategies that both low- and high-earning workers use to find and complete tasks via a survey of 360 workers. Nearly all workers surveyed had earning money as their primary goal, and workers used many of the same tools (browser extensions and scripts) and strategies in an attempt to earn more money, regardless of earning level. However, high-earning workers used more tools, were more …
