Applications Of Systems Thinking In Honors Education: The Justice Challenge, Rebecca C. Bott, Jonathan D. Kotinek, Timothy J. Nichols, Heidi Appel, Andrea Radasanu, Joy L. Hart

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Honors education has long been praised for its potential as a test bed for curricular innovation. A wide variety of high-impact practices have been employed to prepare honors students to think critically and tackle complex problems. Examination of the use of systems thinking within pedagogical practices in honors education is, however, nearly nonexistent in the literature. The authors present a brief introduction to systems thinking; review its use within honors curricula; and examine how a nationwide collaborative of honors educators equips students with systems thinking tools to learn about and engage with complex interdisciplinary problems. The authors characterize systems thinking …

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Staffing: A Qualitative Study Of Hr Professionals Across Industries, Batoul Bazzi

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into staffing and recruitment processes across industries. Organizations are using AI-powered tools to support tasks such as résumé screening, interview scheduling, candidate assessments, and data organization. While these technologies offer efficiency and consistency, they also raise important questions related to bias, fairness, privacy, and the continued role of human judgment in hiring decisions. The purpose of this study is to examine how AI is currently used in staffing practices and how organizational leaders perceive its benefits and limitations. This study employed a qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews with three business owners and …

To help fulfill its mission, BYP ventured into retail by opening a boutique named Front Porch Market (FPM) in December 2022. FPM was the focus of a Capstone in Spring 2024, and those efforts led to this follow-up engagement. The …

Fast Training, Slow Learning: Accelerated Playback's Impact On Training Outcomes, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Christa Kiersch 2025 Dominican University of California

Fast Training, Slow Learning: Accelerated Playback's Impact On Training Outcomes, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Christa Kiersch

Barowsky School of Business | Conference Presenations

Speeding up multimedia training materials can boost efficiency but may hinder learning. This study proposes and validates a model where faster playback reduces learning outcomes, partly due to increased cognitive load. The findings illustrate how playback speed impacts learning, informing decisions on efficiency-effectiveness tradeoffs in training design. The research also unexpectedly reveals a novel method to manipulate extraneous cognitive load. These insights help organizations optimize training strategies, balancing the need for efficiency with effective learning outcomes.

A Phenomenological Study Of Success Despite Barriers: How Leaders With Disabilities Experience Supervisory Leadership Through The Lens Of Adaptive Leadership, Ashley Oberlander Townsend 2025 Anderson University - South Carolina

A Phenomenological Study Of Success Despite Barriers: How Leaders With Disabilities Experience Supervisory Leadership Through The Lens Of Adaptive Leadership, Ashley Oberlander Townsend

Dissertations

People with disabilities experience unemployment and underemployment more frequently than those without disabilities and encounter obstacles to becoming supervisory leaders (Harlan & Robert, 1998; Krzeminska et al., 2019; Roberson et al., 2021). The American workforce is significantly impacted by this problem, as more than one in four people have a disability (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). This hermeneutic phenomenological research utilized interviews to collect data from three participants to answer the research question to explore the problem: what are leaders with disabilities’ lived experiences in overcoming barriers to achieving supervisory roles using an adaptive leadership lens? The research …

A Different Risk-Return Relationship, Aydin Selim Oksoy, Matthew R. Farrell, Shaomin Li

We challenge the widely accepted premise that the valuation of an early-stage firm is simply the capital invested (USD) divided by the equity received (%). Instead, we argue that this calculation determines the break-even point for the investor; for example, investing USD 1.0 in exchange for a 10% equity sets a firm-level free cash flow target of USD 10.0, resulting in a 0% return for the investor. The design of our study is that of a descriptive analysis of the phenomenon, based on three assumptions: that angel investing is a two-issue negotiation, that negotiation positions are communicated sequentially from capital …

The Motives For Mergers And Acquisitions And Their Implications For Research And Practice, Kris Irwin, Craig Armstrong, Paul Drnevich, Mario Schijven

Management Faculty Publications

Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) have long intrigued scholars given their size, complexity, and frequent failure. Despite an extensive body of research on M&A, a key limitation in M&A research is the lack of focus on the motives underpinning acquisitions, which may explain frequent mixed and inconclusive results. Much of the existing literature struggles to fully capture the complex and multifaceted nature of these motives, limiting the ability to draw consistent conclusions. In this paper, we review academic and practical perspectives on M&A motives, highlighting both discrepancies and methodological challenges. Our key contributions include a comparison of theoretical and practical insights, …

Business

The impact of board structures on firm performance remains a contentious governance topic with competing theoretical paradigms and inconclusive empirical support. Scholars propose that national culture could reconcile contradictory evidence; yet, argumentation is fragmented and direct tests are rare. We meta-analyzed 513 samples across 54 countries to examine relationships between board structures (i.e., board size, board independence, and CEO duality) and firm performance. We model national culture, using Hofstede's six cultural dimensions, as moderators to test whether these relationships align with agency or stewardship theory across different cultural settings.
