Boundaries Of Modernity: Spanish Women Writers At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Carmen Arranz 2010 University of Kentucky

Boundaries Of Modernity: Spanish Women Writers At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Carmen Arranz

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Spanish women writers that establish their literary careers early in twentieth century find themselves at an interesting historical crossroads as the world changes from an agrarian to an industrial paradigm. On one hand, this change leads to a strong current of traditionalism, to which most male writers adhere, as it offers the attractive idea of return to a pre-modern simplicity; on the other, this change opens up possibilities for social improvement and participation for those groups traditionally excluded from power. Embracing this change poses the opportunity for female subjects to reshape fundamental structures of society and, in sum, eventually create ...

The Subtle Arbitrios Of Cervantes: Don Quijote As A Cautionary Tale For Leaders, Jonathan Edwin Olson 2010 Minnesota State University - Mankato

The Subtle Arbitrios Of Cervantes: Don Quijote As A Cautionary Tale For Leaders, Jonathan Edwin Olson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Miguel de Cervantes was clearly a man who had an interest in leadership. He sought leadership positions for himself during his life, and his works often include treatments of leadership issues. However, there are only three studies of leadership in his most important work, Don Quijote, and all are seriously flawed due to their failure to interpret passages from the novel in their context. This study uses a historical-grammatical hermeneutic to correct this error. Through a close reading of the text, this study demonstrates that Cervantes has encoded warnings for leaders in Don Quixote.

Un Film Sentimental Para Tus Ojos: El Cinematógrafo En La Poesía Ultraísta De Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Vera Ruth Jones 2010 University of Montana

Un Film Sentimental Para Tus Ojos: El Cinematógrafo En La Poesía Ultraísta De Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Vera Ruth Jones

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Lucía Sánchez Saornil was the only woman poet who participated in Ultraism, a Spanish Avant-Garde movement of the 1920s that implemented constant thematic and formal experimentation in search of a new language capable of representing modernity and technology. This Spanish-language paper focuses on the impact of cinematography on the Ultraist poetry of Sánchez Saornil. By analyzing two of her poems, "Cines" (1921) and "Domingo" (date unknown), I explain how she utilizes cinematography to 1) to express her experience of modernity and 2) to articulate her relationship with her poetry and the reader. The analysis of these texts and the role ...

Heroines, Hierarchies, And Space: The Fiction Of Cecilia Absatz, Naomi Lindstrom 2010 University of Texas at Austin

Heroines, Hierarchies, And Space: The Fiction Of Cecilia Absatz, Naomi Lindstrom

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This examination of the fiction of Cecilia Absatz (Argentina, 1943), covers three novels: Féiguele (1976), the 1982 Té con canela ‘Tea with cinnamon’ and the 1985 Los años pares ‘The Even-Numbered Years.’ The continuities between the three texts, and especially the similarity of their female protagonists, who age from adolescence to the threshold of middle age, allow these novels to be read as a series. The primary focus of this study is the maturation of the protagonists as they struggle for autonomy while navigating different types of space. These include space that is marked by gender; identified as Jewish; and ...

The Picaresque According To Cervantes, Chad M. Gasta 2010 Iowa State University

The Picaresque According To Cervantes, Chad M. Gasta

World Languages and Cultures Publications

There is an unfortunate and enduring belief among non-Hispanist scholars that Miguel de Cervantes was a writer of the picaresque and that his most famous protagonist, Don Quixote, is a picaresque (anti)hero. This misjudgment, mostly outside Spain, has historical roots, starting with Cervantes' own contemporaries, and has lasted to the present. The misunderstanding stems firstly from the fact that many scholars are unfamiliar with the Spanish picaresque. This is confounded by the fact that Cervantes did indeed integrate numerous features of the Spanish picaresque into several of his works, especially Don Quixote and his Exemplary Novels. However, this problem ...

Chile: Mi Conquista, De Norte A Sur, Grace Cowan

CMC Senior Theses

My thesis is a creative expression in poetry about my study abroad experience in Chile. During my time in Chile I traveled all over the country and tried to experience as much of the culture as possible. These poems speak of different parts of the country that I visited and different cultural aspects to which I was exposed. The work also includes photos from my travels to accompany several of my poems. This thesis was written with the hope that others might be able to better understand my semester in Chile.

Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, pablo rosser 2009 COLABORADOR HONORÍFICO UNIVERSIDAD ALICANTE

Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, Pablo Rosser

pablo rosser

Yolanda Carrion & Pablo Rosser Six wells at Tossal de les Basses in Spain captured a large assemblage of Iberian woodworking debris. The authors’ analysis distinguishes a wide variety of boxes, handles, staves, pegs and joinery made in different and appropriate types of wood, some – like cypress – imported from some distance away. We have here a glimpse of a sophisticated and little known industry of the fourth century BC.
