Cartografías Afectivas Para Tiempos De Crisis. Emocionalidad Textual En La Poesía Española Reciente, Alberto López Martín

The Coastal Review

This article pays attention to the mobilizing potential of certain poetic productions in the context of the 2008 Spanish financial crisis. From the perspective of Affect and Emotion studies, I use Jonathan Flatley’s notion of affective cartography to illustrate how Antonio Orihuela and Pablo García Casado’s poems extrapolate from personal dimensions of the financial crisis’ drama (unemployment, evictions, etc.) to the socio-political sphere. I argue that, in such context, the poems studied possess the potentiality of arousing an empowering empathy and indignation in a historically-situated reader.

In the romance tradition, women are relegated to “ideal love” or distracting presence, either Virgin (Christian presence) or Witch/Whore (pagan presence). The women in the Spanish Conde Partinuplés, however, transgress their typical roles. Throughout the tale, Partinuplés is aided by a succession of women who do not follow the rules of Romance. Through the transgression of gender and racial norms, the female-dominated spaces become spaces of transformative power. In direct opposition are the male-dominated Christian-identified spaces of the Church and Court. During the romance these spaces hold only treachery and falsehood for the young Count. This article analyzes the interconnections between masculinity and migration in the work Hemos perdido el sol, by Ángel María de Lera. The novel depicts the challenging experiences of Spanish migrants in Germany in the 1960s and the different conception of gender between Spanish and German cultures. The impact of migration on the main character’s masculinity is threefold. First, migration enhances his traditional sense of masculinity as he escapes poverty and subsequently feels more respected as a man when he achieves economic independence. Secondly, migration negatively affects his masculinity through the insecurities and discrimination he endures abroad. Lastly, although he adjusts …

Clara Guillén Marín investigates the reality of immigration in Spain, supporting her research with the works of Isolina Ballesteros, Isabel Santaolalla, and Daniela Flesler, in addition to others on the cutting edge of defining the “new social reality” (Guillén Marín 1). She shows the impacts of immigration and the resultant changes to aspects of the Spanish economy, society, and culture. The epistolary correspondence between the Spanish intellectuals Zenobia Camprubi (1887-1956) and Pilar de Zubiaurre (1884- 1970) from October 1938 to August 1956 reveals a long friendship that began in Madrid in the 1910S and continued during the exile that they, as supporters of the democratic Second Republic, both suffered after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the victory of dictator Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. During exile Camprubi writes to Zubiaurre from the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, while Zubiaurre responds from Mexico, where she lived the last thirty years of her …

José del Valle, in his contribution to our “Sociolinguistic Frontiers” series, looks at the intersection of the sociolinguistic study of Spanish in the US and the transformations of Spanish language departments in higher education. Del Valle traces the history of the institutionalization of Spanish teaching and study and its effects on linguistic research’s position within Spanish departments. Shifts in approaches to the use of language in social practice, and the growing demands on language units to act as service departments for language learners, has isolated scholars in those institutional homes from broader integration into sociolinguistic research.

In her article “Jewish Mysticism from Borges to Cirlot,” Erika Martínez discusses the form in which some Latin American and Spanish poets of the twentieth century have experimented, in a disruptive way, with the subjective possibilities of stillness and of time capable of overflowing. Foucault defended, in his last lectures, the construction of a new governmentality of self and of others. Among the many possible technologies to achieve it would be that of the writing of a poetry without words, knowing the insurrectional potentiality of silence. Among the characteristics of epic poetry are the topic of war, love encounters, heroism of exemplary individuals, and the narration of events contemporary to the audience to reinforce a collective historical identity. Arauco domado by Pedro de Oña, born in Angol (modern Chile), reiterates these traditional expectations with its protagonist, characters, setting, and latter theatrical representations within the viceregal context. This thesis analyzes the diverse representations of blackness and Haitian culture in the literary works of the Dominican diaspora. First, the texts of the Dominican diaspora that highlight Africa are analyzed in order to determine to what extent these works represent real historical and social phenomena accurately, and in what ways these texts question or present other realities that have not been studied by the critics. Besides highlighting the legitimacy of Islam, a religion that was prohibited by the Spanish Inquisition during the 1500’s, Aljamiado-Moriscoliterature has been distinguished by its secrecy, hybridity, ethnocentrism, proselytism, and emphasis on the chaotic reality of the clandestine social group considered to be the "last Moors" of Spain. The Spanish-Muslims or Moriscoswrote this underground literature in the Spanish language, utilizing Arabic characters. The work of historians and “moriscologists” such as L.P.
