The tertulia provided women with a path into the political and social climate of Spain. This research examines the role of women in tertulias, specifically exploring primary documents from the Academia del Buen Gusto and analyzing them for their depiction of Enlightenment ideals and women. Remember the Hand studies a body of articulate manuscript books from the Christian monasteries of northern Iberia in the tenth and eleventh centuries. These exceptional, richly illuminated codices have in common an urgent sense of scribal presence—scribes name themselves, describe themselves, even paint their own portraits. While marginal notes, even biographical ones, are a common feature of medieval manuscripts, rarely do scribes make themselves so fully known. These writers address the reader directly, asking for prayers of intercession and sharing of themselves. They ask the reader to join them in not only acknowledging the labor of writing but also in …

Language is a communicative tool that in the possession of politicians holds the power to be persuasive and aggressive, empowering and uniting, or disruptive and dividing. Previous research has relied on numerous methodological approaches to analyze political discourse from different viewpoints to reveal the manner in which politicians as part of political institutions transform and manipulate language. Alma’s Way, a bilingual children’s animated television program from Fred Rogers Productions about a six year old Puerto Rican girl living in the Bronx of New York City with her family, premiered on PBS Kids in October 2021. Through the use of discourse analysis, this academic paper explores characters’ use of linguistic and cultural practices. This article analyzes the construction of TopoRadio (toporadio.org), an interactive map that showcases publications and archives about Spanish-language radio in the U.S. The map aims to promote a more inclusive and comprehensive representation of U.S. radio history by improving the visibility of contributions from Latinx broadcasters. The article addresses how map-making historically suppressed Spanish-language radio programs and proposes using critical cartography as a framework for mapping back this history. The technical elements of TopoRadio, including publication selection criteria, metadata design, geocoding process, and the appraisal of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, are described to provide scholars with a reproducible method …

Entre los textos que componen la colección La ilustre familia androide (1972), del escritor salvadoreño Álvaro Menen Desleal (1931-2000), hay doce cuentos que pueden considerarse como ciencia ficción. En este trabajo se lleva cabo un análisis de dichos cuentos, para lo cual estos de dividen en cuatro categorías: robots, viajes espaciales, civilizaciones alienígenas y elucubraciones teológicas. In the prologue to the 2014 edition of Cantos de las Guerras Preventivas, Costa Rican author Fernando Contreras Castro states that the novel, originally published in 2006, originated as a response to the ambiguously-defined military campaigns that dominated the global geopolitical landscape during the first decade of the 21st century. Contreras Castro further explains that the novel is an attempt at imagining near-future worlds from a distinctly Latin American perspective, while avoiding the currents of cyberpunk and paranoid fiction that dominated late 20th century science fiction writing in the United States.
