In 1976 the Argentine government was taken over by a right wing military junta, attempting to “save” their country from communism. Military officials kidnapped, tortured and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 Argentine citizens, who were thought of as “guerrillas” supporting the leftist government and the late president Juan Perón. These victims are regarded as the disappeared, or Los Desaparecidos; due to the fact their families had no knowledge of where their loved ones were taken, or what was happening to them. This thesis examines the effectiveness of different techniques for teaching Spanish vocabulary to second language learners, specifically focusing on students in SPAN 101 at Minnesota State University, Mankato. It compares traditional flashcards with vocabulary exercises contextualized within language contexts to determine the most impactful method for long-term retention and practical application of Spanish vocabulary. Using a mixed-methods research approach, including pre- and post-assessments and qualitative data collection, the study involves 42 Spanish students. The analysis reveals distinct outcomes: traditional flashcards result in an average improvement of 13.38% in vocabulary correctness, while in-context activities show a more substantial enhancement of 17.47%. …

Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s drawings were created for the sole purpose of illustrating his newly discovered and earth-shattering revelations in the field of neuroscience culminating with his magnum opus: the “Neuron theory” and the “Theory of Dynamic Polarization.” For these discoveries and many others, he shared the 1906 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology with his rival Dr. Camilo Golgi, an Italian pathologist. Known in Spain and Europe, but largely ignored elsewhere, the years 1983-1992 were the Golden Age of Spanish Software, when Spain became Europe’s second largest producer of 8-bit computer games, the dominant video gaming platform at the time. Adults, as well as children, tend to present adjective ordering preferences in their use of multi-adjective strings. For example, the ordering of “big blue bird” rather than “blue big bird” is reliably preferred for speakers of English. Subjectivity has been shown to be a robust predictor of these adjective ordering preferences, where less subjective adjectives are preferred closer to the noun. Still, much of the previous work on adjective ordering preferences has centered a monolingual experience, and has not considered if multilingual speakers differ in their presentation of these preferences, in any of the languages they speak. This thesis examines the use of violent repression by dictators and the ways in which that violence is remembered, particularly through the lenses of literature and film. The first chapter will deal with the questions of when dictators choose to use violence as opposed to other forms of repression and against whom the violence is used. To do so, it will employ select cases to test a number of possible answers. This study analyzes the tweets and oral discourses of eight politicians and social leaders during three of the most important days in the independence struggle between Catalonia and Spain to argue that the way people in power try to persuade their voters is changing, especially in new social networks such as Twitter.
