Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) a mix of right-wing ideologies existed among the Francoist forces. In sharp contrast with the Republican forces, the Francoist insurgents were successful in banding together despite their ideological differences. However, in the postwar era, this relative unity gave way to a struggle among the different ideological positions, each striving to impose its agenda for the new State. The party Falange Española Tradicionalista y de las Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional Sindicalista (FET y de las JONS) assumed power, but was not entirely successful in advancing its totalitarian project, which it had inherited from the prewar …

Miguel, a peasant, journeys to Pueblo Santa Cruz for food, redemption, and a couple of cervezas at the Cantina de los Remedios. While at the Cantina, he becomes fascinated by an old guitar, La llorona, hanging upon the wall. The Cantina's owner, Pedrito, tells him of its origins, and the man who played it -- Rodrigo, perhaps the greatest singer-songwriter to have hailed from Pueblo Santa Cruz, but who mysteriously disappeared following a fateful love affair, leaving La llorona behind.

Chilean Cultural Identity: A Case Study Of Contemporary Mapuche Poetry, La Identidad Cultural Chilena: Un Caso De Estudio De La Poesía Mapuche Contemporánea, Christopher Culbertson
Senior Independent Study Theses
The topic is approached in three different manners: hybrid theory, academic perspectives, and poetry analysis. An application of hybrid theory facilitates the understanding of cultural identity within Chile. A discussion by three Chilean professors reveals the important themes of geographic location, generation, and language in both the production and reception of written contemporary Mapuche poetry. An analysis of selected of written Mapuche poetry depicts the unique conceptualizations of identity by contemporary Mapuche poets. As a result, this independent study shows how written contemporary Mapuche poetry is an appropriate indicator of the evolution of Mapuche hybrid identity.
