Immigration Ministry Implications Of Hallyu: Exploration Of The Potential Impact Of South Korean Popular Cultural Flow On Ministry By And To Immigrants, David Kim

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The phenomenon of Hallyu—Korean popular culture—is globally extensive in its influence and reception. Hallyu has transformed how South Koreans and Korean American immigrants perceive their identity and cultural esteem. Coupled with the Korean American immigrant church’s central role in establishing and growing its communities, Hallyu conditions present an opportunity to impact the immigrant ministry in North America. This study suggests that Hallyu lowers barriers to cross-cultural engagement and connection which can positively impact ministry conducted by immigrants and to immigrants.

With the rise of immigration, what will the future of the Adventist church in North America look like? Will new ethnic immigrants assimilate into white churches? Will Seventh-day Adventist churches eventually become ethnic enclaves that continue to create racialized silos? Is the Adventist church becoming more ethnocentric? How do we foster more intercultural churches?

Working with youth and young adults is a constantly shifting ministry that dynamically develops in different ways to be relevant for young people. Because of these many changes, those older must intentionally engage younger generations in order to experience the fullness of community. Caring provides the Godly model to include all, but it requires work, including spiritual work of purposeful inclusion, new perspectives, shared ideas, mutual respect, and support. While these are vital for including young people in a community, they are just as necessary for other ages as well. It turns out that all people crave community.

Problem

The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical model that describes how the behavioral strategies of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) pastors in Sub-Saharan Africa may have positively influenced congregational giving during the years 2020-2021 of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Method

A qualitative grounded theory research design was used (Corbin & Strauss, 2015). In-depth interviews were conducted to collect data from a purposive sample of SDA pastoral leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa. The collected data were analyzed using an iterative process consisting of open, axial, and selective coding, thereby facilitating the construction of subcategories and a core category. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is confronting an unsettling reality in the 21st century. A considerable body of literature has highlighted an escalating attrition rate, with the 'Ministry journal reporting in April 2019 that almost 50% of new converts eventually abandon their commitment (Thomas, 2019). Other data collected by the World Church through its Office of Research include statistics and archive information that confirm the losses (Knott, 2016; Trimm, 2023). Through a roundtable conversation via Zoom, teachers, pastors, and graduate students discussed the place of gender, citizenship, and faith in their identity formation and social accountability to articulate a hermeneutical lens specific to Southeast Asian contexts that shape and critique queer identities. These participants—primarily ministers, theological students, and seminary formators—engaged in organic, fluid, and multifocal turns to capture experiences that undergird the realities of women and LGBTQIQ+ people of faith in the region.

In the last few years, many of the members of the Hispanic Adventist Church in Georgetown, Delaware, had not learned of community service activities, especially those available in Philanthropic Ministry. The church community has many families with economic needs, which would benefit from a philanthropic program that would supply their basic alimentary needs. Such a program would also open doors for the church to share the Adventist message with the beneficiaries.
