The Document: A Multiple Concept, Sabine Roux 2016 University of Toulouse

The Document: A Multiple Concept, Sabine Roux

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper discusses the concept of the document evolved throughout the 20th century in France, particularly through the writings of Robert Escarpit and Jean Meyriat. The document began as a simple notion and then gradually took on new meanings such that it is now seen as a construction of social values. Multiplicity is posited as a fundamental characteristic of the document, which affects its meaning, its interpretation and its social values. Like a rhizome, the document circulates in social spaces with multiple, nomadic associations through attribution, intention, meaning, interpretations and social values (political issues, artistic and aesthetic dimensions, economy, etc.) …

Russon suggests a pedagogy of cross-cultural awareness that can be derived from taking chapters of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit as a pattern for solving contemporary problems involving racial, ethnic, cultural and religious conflict.

Transcendence And Transformation: Charles Taylor And The Promise Of Inclusive Humanism In A Secular Age., Phillip Williamson Schoenberg 2016 University of New Mexico

Transcendence And Transformation: Charles Taylor And The Promise Of Inclusive Humanism In A Secular Age., Phillip Williamson Schoenberg

Philosophy ETDs

This is a study in the religious philosophy of the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor. I focus in particular on the role of transcendence in his later writing on religion and secularity with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of his overall vision of the way out of the malaise of modernity, namely, his adumbration of a pluralistic solution, which I call "inclusive humanism" in contrast to both a narrow religious humanism on the one hand, and a narrow "exclusive" secular humanism on the other. Transcendence as transformation is the centerpiece of Taylor's hope for the moral and spiritual …

The Owl, The Goldfish And The Bull - The Question Of The Animal And Romantic Poetry, Hui Zhang 2016 Northwestern University

The Owl, The Goldfish And The Bull - The Question Of The Animal And Romantic Poetry, Hui Zhang

Between the Species

This article argues that the representation of animals in Romantic poetry contributes to the contemporary philosophical and ethical discussion of the question of animals by providing a literary expression of the latter. Conversely, reading depictions of animals in Romantic poetry with their philosophical implications in mind throws light on the oppositions between different human groups, such as between Orientals and Occidentals, or between males and females, in Romantic poetry. These categories connect with each other in different ways in the works of three prominent Romantic poets: William Wordsworth, Lord Byron and Alexander Pushkin. Animals in their poetry reflect their views …

Something Is Rotten In The Unreal City: Hamlet In The Waste Land, Aimee Valentine 2016 Western Michigan University

Something Is Rotten In The Unreal City: Hamlet In The Waste Land, Aimee Valentine

The Hilltop Review

T.S. Eliot’s poem of 1922, “The Waste Land,” lays philosophical and stylistic ground for the Modern literary movement in which human experience takes the performative shape of inner dialog (or soliloquy) for the benefit of the reader/audience. This essay will argue that Eliot’s poem is an existentialist work that is not merely informed by Shakespeare’s Hamlet (the earliest example of British existentialism), but is directly modeled after it, in Eliot’s attempt to rectify the play’s perceived failings. Existentialism as a key to unlocking the mood of Modern literature is overlooked by those critics who relegate existentialist literature to the …
