Is Your Computer Lying? Ai And Deception, Noreen L. Herzfeld 2023 College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University

Is Your Computer Lying? Ai And Deception, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Reuter Professorship of Science and Religion Publications

Recent developments in AI, especially the spectacular success of Large Language models, have instigated renewed questioning of what remains distinctively human. As AI stands poised to take over more and more human tasks, what is left that distinguishes humans? One way we might identify a humanlike intelligence would be when we detect it telling lies. Yet AIs lack both the intention and the motivation to truly tell lies, instead producing merely bullshit. With neither emotions, embodiment, nor the social awareness that leads to a theory of mind, AIs lack the internal referents on which to judge truth or falsity. When …

Role Of Identity In Peace Process: A Re-Interpretation Of The Islamic Heritage, Yasmine Z. Radwan 2023 Future University in Egypt

Role Of Identity In Peace Process: A Re-Interpretation Of The Islamic Heritage, Yasmine Z. Radwan

Future Journal of Social Science

Reviewing the Western theories and ideologies on building and maintaining peace reflected in the conflict management and resolution in practice always indicates an imperative need for another perspective that could play an integral role in the international society. Regardless of the continuing call for an Islamic contribution in this field on the part of some Western scholars, the Muslim society itself based on a specific culture and a distinctive identity requires a different approach with particular tools that could fit its epistemological model. Exploring this approach, which is the main concern and the main aim of this paper, would never …

On The Duty Of Uncivil Disobedience: Thoreau's Action From Principle, Alan F. Garcia 2023 Texas A&M International University

On The Duty Of Uncivil Disobedience: Thoreau's Action From Principle, Alan F. Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the uncivil disobedience evident in some of Henry D. Thoreau’s work, which is often regarded as the birth and foundation of what is today known as “civil disobedience.” Using the nature of Thoreau’s subtle language and his philosophy of action from principle in his writings, including “Resistance to Civil Government” (1849), Walden (1854), “Life Without Principle” (1863), “A Plea for Captain John Brown" (1859), and some of his real life actions, this thesis will examine the antagonistic and, perhaps, uncivil nature of Thoreau’s so-called “civil disobedience.” This thesis will also incorporate Sophocles’ play Antigone (441 BBC), Candice …

At Noon: (Post)Nihilistic Temporalities In The Age Of Machine-Learning Algorithms That Speak, Talha Issevenler 2023 CUNY City College

At Noon: (Post)Nihilistic Temporalities In The Age Of Machine-Learning Algorithms That Speak, Talha Issevenler

Publications and Research

This article recapitulates and develops the attempts in the Nietzschean traditions to address and overcome the proliferation of nihilism that Nietzsche predicted to unfold in the next 200 years (WP 2). Nietzsche approached nihilism not merely as a psychology but as a labyrinthic and pervasive historical process whereby the highest values of culture and founding assumptions of philosophical thought prevented the further flourishing of life. Therefore, he thought nihilism had to be encountered and experienced on many, often opposing, fronts to be fully consumed and left behind. Thus, just as Nietzsche captured the subtle reinventions of nihilism in new forms …

Illustrating Philosophy: Comments On Thomas Wartenberg's Thoughtful Images, Elisabeth Schellekens 2023 Uppsala University

Illustrating Philosophy: Comments On Thomas Wartenberg's Thoughtful Images, Elisabeth Schellekens

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This short paper focuses on Thomas Wartenberg’s Thoughtful Images (OUP 2022) and offers a critical discussion of some of the book’s main claims. Of particular interest is the notion described by Wartenberg as “concept-based illustration” and the prospects of this kind of illustration to successfully represent a philosophical concept or theory. Among the questions raised, we find “What is required for an artwork to represent a philosophical claim?”, “Which norms should govern successful illustrations?”, and “How detailed can the content of a concept-based illustration be?”.

Divine Simplicity And Naming God, Michael Martin 2023 The University of Notre Dame Australia

Divine Simplicity And Naming God, Michael Martin

Aristos

This essay explores the doctrine of divine simplicity (DDS) within the framework of classical theism, addressing its compatibility with the plurality of divine attributes. This essay outlines classical theistic arguments for God's existence that are essential to understanding DDS, and establishes that denial of either DDS or the proof of God's existence implicitly negates the other. The DDS maintains that God is absolutely simple, devoid of parts, and physical or metaphysical, affirming His utter transcendence. However, this essay highlights certain distinct attributes that can be logically assigned to God, such as goodness, knowledge, and power. Consequently, an objection emerges: if …

A Talk With Time, Samanatha Kuban 2023 SUNY College Cortland

A Talk With Time, Samanatha Kuban

Master's Theses

I chose to write a collection of genre-mixing short stories to depict the vastness and complexity of time as my English Master’s thesis project. Thinking about the constructs of time and how they function or do not function within our society sparked my interest in this field of knowledge and discussion. I am a person that tends to feel a large amount of anxiety surrounding the passage of time or time limits so reading deeper into studies of time and how we think about it in various ways proved to be an outlet for a better understanding. I chose to …

Hope Against Despair, Joel Martin 2023 The University of Notre Dame Australia

Hope Against Despair, Joel Martin

Aristos

There exists in this life, as a result of our fallen condition, a real temptation to the sin of despair. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate why the theological virtue of hope is utterly essential for the Christian life and beatitude by analysing how it overcomes any and all temptations to despair. In order to achieve this end, this paper first defines what the theological virtue of hope consists of, explaining how it elevates man’s nature so as to desire, efficaciously, his final end: Supernatural beatitude. This paper then defines what exactly despair is, explaining how it results …

How Does Aristotle’S Philosophical Position Enable The Pursuit And Attainment Of Eudaimonia?, Mia Rahi 2023 The University of Notre Dame Australia

How Does Aristotle’S Philosophical Position Enable The Pursuit And Attainment Of Eudaimonia?, Mia Rahi

Aristos

Philosophy is a broad and rich discipline, ranging from formal logic to epistemology and aesthetics. However, in Therapy of Desire, Martha Nussbaum claims that Ancient Western philosophers were largely concerned with the pursuit of human happiness and flourishing; that is, ‘eudaimonia.’ In this paper, Aristotle’s philosophical position regarding the human person will be examined in an attempt to explain how one is able to attain eudaimonia. His treatise on this topic is one that contains many different components but can be drawn back to the central question of ‘what is the telos of the human person?’ and how this …

Networking For Mid-Level Administrators In Higher Education: Increase Job Performance And Reduce Burnout, Laura Glasbrenner 2023 Indiana State University

Networking For Mid-Level Administrators In Higher Education: Increase Job Performance And Reduce Burnout, Laura Glasbrenner

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mid-level administrators occupy a complex position within higher education institutions, a role defined by “middleness” (Gleeson & Shain, 1999, p. 488), which characterizes their place in institutional hierarchies between superiors and subordinates. Mid-level administrators often feel isolated since they cannot be seen as having close personal relationships with those above or below them in the rankings. Consequently, mid-level administrators are subject to burnout, a psychological condition resulting from isolation compounded by working long hours reconciling the competing and conflicting needs of supervisors and subordinates, which leaves them emotionally exhausted, physically depleted, and feeling like they have reached a professional dead-end. …

God As Über-King Of Moral Leading: Veiled And Unveiled, Paul K. Moser 2023 Loyola University Chicago

God As Über-King Of Moral Leading: Veiled And Unveiled, Paul K. Moser

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

How can the Biblical God be the Lord and King who, being typically unseen and even self-veiled at times, authoritatively leads people for divine purposes? This article’s main thesis is that the answer is in divine moral leading via human moral experience of God (of a kind to be clarified). The Hebrew Bible speaks of God as ‘king,’ including for a time prior to the Jewish human monarchy. Ancient Judaism, as Martin Buber has observed, acknowledged direct and indirect forms of divine rule and thus of theocracy. This article explores the importance of divine rule as divine direct leading, particularly …

An Aristotelian Model Of Education, Cecilia Hunt 2023 The University of Notre Dame Australia

An Aristotelian Model Of Education, Cecilia Hunt

Aristos

This paper explores a model of education that draws primarily on Aristotle’s philosophy and that of Thomas Aquinas. I discuss the way in which Aristotle’s understanding of education has the broad aim of human flourishing. I argue that an Aristotelian approach to education aims to help students to cultivate moral and intellectual virtue and to love learning, thereby helping students to become critical thinkers who know how to think deeply and live well. In this view, since learning is proper to human beings as rational animals, education is intrinsically valuable, not merely instrumentally valuable. For this reason, I suggest that …

Adolescent Well-Being And Exclusionary Discipline: A Resiliency Model, Rachel Ballard 2023 Indiana State University

Adolescent Well-Being And Exclusionary Discipline: A Resiliency Model, Rachel Ballard

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents, especially those with a mental illness, often behave in ways judged to be impulsive, overly emotional, and irresponsible (Gogtay et al., 2004; Lawrence et al., 2015; Tamnes et al., 2010). Many teen behaviors which concern adults can be related to underdeveloped skills or competencies, rate of brain development, or expressions of mental disorders (Casey et al., 2011; Serbin et al., 2011; Spear, 2000). Behaviors commonly associated with adolescence, such as impulsivity, risk-taking, and efforts to fit in with peers, are often seen as a serious threat to school harmony, learning, and student safety, necessitating a disciplinary response from school …

Lip(S) Service: A Socioethical Overview Of Social Media Platforms’ Censorship Policies Regarding Consensual Sexual Content, Sage Futrell 2023 William & Mary

Lip(S) Service: A Socioethical Overview Of Social Media Platforms’ Censorship Policies Regarding Consensual Sexual Content, Sage Futrell

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

The regulation of sexual exploitation on social media is a pressing issue that has been addressed by government legislation. However, laws such as FOSTA-SESTA has inadvertently restricted consensual expressions of sexuality as well. In four social media case studies, this paper investigates the ways in which marginalized groups have been impacted by changing censorship guidelines on social media, and how content moderation methods can be inclusive of these groups. I emphasize the qualitative perspectives of sex workers and queer creators in these case studies, in addition to my own experiences as a content moderation and social media management intern for …

The Hidden Quality Cost Resulting From Food And Drug Administration Inspection Failures In Mid To Large Companies, Jonathan Walston 2023 Indiana State University

The Hidden Quality Cost Resulting From Food And Drug Administration Inspection Failures In Mid To Large Companies, Jonathan Walston

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An approach to identify and validate hidden quality costs associated with regulatory non-compliance from inspections by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not been previously researched. This dissertation presents a robust quantitative methodology to analyze the daily cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) on populations of publicly traded mid-to-large cap companies around FDA inspection events having negative outcomes. Three hypotheses have been tested focusing only on inspection events from companies falling under the biologics product type category. Hypothesis 1 states that there is no statistically significant correlation between the sum of CAR around inspection windows for such companies when a negative …

Tye's Intentionalism: Representationalism & Bivalency Of Transparency, Ryan Skunda 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Tye's Intentionalism: Representationalism & Bivalency Of Transparency, Ryan Skunda

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this paper I examine the intentionalist theory of phenomenal consciousness articulated by the philosopher Michael Tye. Tye’s theory is also considered a representationalist theory, representationalism is a theory in the philosophy of mind that argues that we have internal representations in our mind that allow us to represent things that are in the world. Tye presupposes a connection between representationalism and intentionalism, which I challenge as part of my argument against him. I use his commitment to transparency and its bivalent nature to illustrate a conundrum for Tye and argue that an enactivist approach to phenomenal consciousness is superior …

The Association Between Maternal Exposure To Traffic-Related Air Pollution And Neonatal Death, Low Birthweight, And Orofacial Clefts Among Newborns In New York State, Excluding New York City (1999-2019), Douglas Done 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

The Association Between Maternal Exposure To Traffic-Related Air Pollution And Neonatal Death, Low Birthweight, And Orofacial Clefts Among Newborns In New York State, Excluding New York City (1999-2019), Douglas Done

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The following dissertation describes three case-control studies designed to investigate the association between maternal exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and the following three outcomes in newborns: 1) neonatal death; 2) low birthweight; and 3) orofacial clefts. Exposure to TRAP will be assessed using distance-weighted traffic density (DWTD), measured in vehicles per day (VPD) that accounts for all roadways within 228.6-meter (750 ft) of the mother’s residence at the time of birth and the intensity of their average annual daily traffic (AADT) based on roadway and traffic data collected by the NYS Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) from 1995 to …
