The Somewhere We Wish Were Nowhere: Dystopian Realities And (Un)Democratic Imaginaries, Benjamin B. Taylor
Senior Independent Study Theses
How do political practices influence mass culture? Conversely, how does mass culture influence political practice? This project addresses these questions by turning to the concepts of utopia and dystopia. Imagined utopic and dystopic visions express both the hopes and anxieties of the societies producing them. Dystopias also highlight the mechanisms of power that function within particular social orders. Through readings of Lois Lowry’s The Giver and Phillip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, I demonstrate how utopia and dystopia function and how we can respond to dystopic realities by theorizing solutions that are more conducive to the …

Hannah Arendt And The Political Meaning Of Human Dignity, John Macready
Staff Publications
In Hannah Arendt and the Fragility of Human Dignity, Professor John Douglas Macready offers a post-foundational account of human dignity by way of a reconstructive reading of Hannah Arendt. He argues that Arendt’s experience of political violence and genocide in the twentieth century, as well as her experience as a stateless person, led her to rethink human dignity as an intersubjective event of political experience. By tracing the contours of Arendt’s thoughts on human dignity through a close reading of her published works, letters, lectures, and journals, Professor Macready offers convincing evidence that Arendt was engaged in retrieving the political …

Technology And The Impoverishment Of Experience: An Insight Through Heidegger And Marcuse, Brenna C. Gradus
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
The influence of technology in contemporary society is increasingly pervasive. While humankind reaps the benefits technology has to offer, these benefits do not come without costs. Often these costs are neither articulated nor addressed. Technology, from the Industrial Revolution to the Information Age, has reestablished the way in which we orient ourselves in our world. In doing so it has, in many cases, lowered our standard of human experience, thus creating an impoverishment of experience itself. Martin Heidegger and Herbert Marcuse provide especially insightful considerations of the ways in which modern technology impoverishes human existence. Furthermore, they have both posed …

Scientific Fictionalism And The Problem Of Inconsistency In Nietzsche, Justin Remhof
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In this article, I begin to develop Nietzsche’s scientific fictionalism in order to make headway toward resolving a central interpretive issue in his epistemology. For Nietzsche knowledge claims are falsifications. Presumably, this is a result of his puzzling view that truths are somehow false. I argue that Nietzsche thinks knowledge claims are falsifications because he embraces a scientific fictionalist view according to which inexact representations, which are false, can also be accurate, or true, and that this position is not inconsistent.

We will view Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Reservoir …

The Normative Architecture Of Reality: Towards An Object-Oriented Ethics, Justin L. Harmon
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
The fact-value distinction has structured and still structures ongoing debates in metaethics, and all of the major positions in the field (expressivism, cognitivist realism, and moral error theory) subscribe to it. In contrast, I claim that the fact-value distinction is a contingent product of our intellectual history and a prime object for questioning. The most forceful reason for rejecting the distinction is that it presupposes a problematic understanding of the subject-object divide whereby one tends to view humans as the sole source of normativity in the world. My dissertation aims to disclose the background against which human ethical praxis is …
