The Center for Archaeological Studies at Texas State University-San Marcos conducted additional archaeological investigations for the proposed Fulton Mansion State Historic Site (41AS79) Visitor’s Center, Aransas County, Texas, between October 19 and November 13, 2009 on behalf of the Texas Historical Commission Historic Sites Division. Investigations of the Area of Potential Effect are a continuation of testing investigations begun by Ringstaff in 2007 (Ringstaff 2008). Work was carried out by Carole Leezer as Project Archaeologist, Julian A. Sitters and Sarah Scogin as Archaeological Technicians, and Jon C. During December 2010 and January 2011, a trial excavation was conducted at Giv'at Ha-Oranim, north of Kefar Vradim, (Permit No. A-6072; map ref. 225875–6219/767198–477), in advance of planned construction. The excavation, undertaken on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, was funded by the Ministry of Construction and Housing and directed by G. B. Jaffe, with the assistance of R. Hamisa and Y. Gur (area supervision), Y. Yaakobi (administration), R. Mishayev and M. Kahan (surveying and drafting), L. Porat (field conservation), A. Shapiro (GIS), M. Hartal and V. Hundreds of thousands of Jews from Poland came to America after 1880. Many built synagogues with details recalling synagogues in their homeland. Immigrant artisans brought motifs and methods of Poland. Many of these synagogues were small, so the relationship to Polish art was on the inside in the painted and carved decoration. Established architects also had access to Polish synagogues as sources. With publication of the Jewish Encyclopedia (1901-06) images of Polish synagogues, such as the Warsaw’s Tlomackie Street Synagogue, became part of many Jewish libraries. In January 2010, a trial excavation was conducted within the premises of the Meiri House Museum in the Jewish Quarter of Zefat, in a room that had served as a ritual bath (mikveh) during the Ottoman period and throughout the British Mandate era in the twentieth century (Permit No. A-5827/2010; map. ref. 246292–308/763692–707). Analysis and characterization of faunal remains -- those bones and bone fragments collected from archaeological sites -- allows anthropologists and archaeologists to more completely reconstruct the ways in which ancient societies survived and interacted. As animals have invariably played an integral role in human society, providing transportation, draft, and a consistent food source, the study of their bones can elucidate the lifestyles and cultural practices of the people who raised and utilized them.
