Overlooked historically, women’s colonial literature has helped shape perspectives on race, gender and power. Male and female colonists alike carried glorious imperialistic fantasies, which can be found in the literature of the time. Specifically, German colonialism occurred much later than all other nations and lasted for only a brief thirty year period, 1884 through the end of World War I. Many women wrote on the subject. Lora Wildenthal shows in her book German Women for Empire, 1884-1945 that women colonial writers wanted to promote colonization and the role of women in it. First of all, I must admit that it was more difficult than I initially thought it would be to approach this project. The curriculum for beginning German classes, as well as for other beginning language classes here at Brigham Young University, is very tight. Class time has to almost be exclusively used for the teaching of grammar and other principles; thus, if I spent much time trying to integrate gospel principles, the class got behind and felt disadvantaged at test time. The limited materials that were available to me enabled me to discover Afro-Germans as a people who are barely recognized by their fellow citizens and even less acknowledged by foreign nationals residing outside of Germany. In May I traveled to the Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, New York and interviewed Father Serge Nedelsky about Orthodox doctrine and Dostoevsky’s portrayal of Father Zosima in the Brothers Karamazov. Prior to the interview I had created a list of six questions to use as probes in the discussion to come to understand the Russian Orthodox response to Father Zosima. In Dostoevsky and the Christian Tradition, Pattison and Thompson suggested that we try to understand Dostoevsky’s writings from the perspective of those “who come from within the Orthodox community” and not from that of “outsiders.” I found, though, both …

This study compares pronunciation gains in German consonants over an 11-week period across three different learning environments, namely study abroad (SA), German House and a classroom setting. In particular, we focused on gains students make on 6 German sounds, including the “ch”-sounds ([ç] ich ‘I’ vs. [x] as in acht ‘8’), /ts/ as in zehn ‘ten’, German /r/ and /l/ and use of “sh” before /p/ and /t/ word initially, e.g., Sport pronounced like Schport.
