The number of post-secondary German immersion programs in the United States has decreased from eleven to three since their heyday in the 1960s and the 1970s. The remaining three include: the German Immersion Program at Middlebury Language Schools (est. 1915), the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik (est. 1958), and the Deutsche Sommerschule von New Mexico (est. 1975). These programs provide post-secondary students with immersive German-learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate credit during a summer session each year. Of these schools, the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik stands alone in not having an accessible written history available to the public, which this thesis …

When Critics Are Artists: Ekphrasis In Erotic Art Criticism, Joanna A. Ligon

In “Against Interpretation,” Susan Sontag argues for an erotics of art in art criticism in place of hermeneutics. In this thesis, I examine erotics of art, a focus on form and experiencing art instead of exclusively on content, in practice. Drawing on other essays by Sontag, specifically the essay “Godard” in comparison with the filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard’s own filmic criticism in Breathless, criticism according to an erotics of art becomes a new artwork itself. Subsequently, I present a definition of erotic through Anne Carson and Roland Barthes and juxtapose the term with Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics. The comparison ultimately undoes …

This paper seeks to answer one central question: How can the life and work of Ernst Jünger help illuminate the development of fascist ideas, culture, politics, and power across Europe from 1920-1945? The components of that question are: what were the core elements of Jünger’s aesthetics, morality, and politics? How did he synthesize these elements to create his influential vision of German fascism? What were Jünger’s interactions and exchanges with other European fascists, as well as influential Nazis including Carl Schmitt, Joseph Goebbels, and Adolph Hitler himself? This Master's thesis undertakes a close reading of Heinrich von Kleist's Die Herrmannsschlacht, focusing explicitly on the female characters and placing the character Hally, who does not even appear in the dramatis personae, at the center of its considerations. It also takes a look at Thusnelda, who is the princess of the Cherusker and central to the plot and the outcome of the play, examining her in relationship to Hally. Relying on textual evidence, it carries out a character analysis that focuses on the female charac ters while considering them in the context of the play as a whole. This …

This work is the first comprehensive book-length survey of racial and ethnic inequities in Germany’s health system. It takes a novel approach to understanding health inequities by focusing on the overarching structures which shape them in the German context, using examples from various areas of the health system to clarify their nuances. The Introduction grounds the need for understanding and combating health inequities in Germany’s unique postwar constitutional commitment to human dignity. This English literature thesis project explores an emerging, genre-defying body of fiction which I call “speculative migration fiction.” Speculative migration fiction imagines how ongoing global developments like climate change, technological development, and war may shape future migrations. Drawing on Benedict Anderson’s conception of national culture, Wendy Brown’s theory of the border, and Caroline Levine’s understanding of literary form, as well as close readings from Scattered All Over the Earth by Yōko Tawada, Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, and 2 A.M. in Little America by Ken Kalfus, I argue that transnational migrations move toward becoming postnational migrations as migrants evade border …

Narratives Of Exile: Themes Of Displacement In Seghers, Duras, And Elio, Erin Consla

This thesis examines identity, memory, and displacement in the exile narratives of Anna Seghers, Marguerite Duras, and María Luisa Elío. I argue that identity post-exile can be conceptualized as a continuous process of becoming, marked by a kaleidoscope of past, present, and future. Several aesthetic maneuvers such as the use of elements of form, memories of childhood, and palimpsest are shared by the chosen narratives, resulting in similar negotiations with identity. Through analysis of the authors' aesthetic focalizations, it becomes clear that their binary subject positions are modulated by the liminality and contradictions inherent in identity creation after exile. In translating Hermann Hesse's lyric poem "Ravenna (1)," I have used an approach that tries to balance maintaining the spirit of the original while also engaging with the work as an essentially creative process. I have gone against the precedent set by previous English translator James Wright by maintaining formal elements, such as rhyme scheme, at the price of some literal exactness. On the other hand, I have also detailed the ways that I have built into the translation some of my own interpretations of the poem as well as Hesse’s overall body of work. During the nineteenth century, the Brothers Grimm undertook the task of preserving German folklore during a time of cultural upheaval and struggle for national identity. One such tale, Briar Rose, emerges as a site of ideological interplay between Christian themes and Teutonic traditions. By analyzing the Grimms’ 1812 (first) and 1857 (last) editions, this thesis investigates how the text reflects and synthesizes these distinct belief systems into a coherent narrative.

The following is a study of the poetry of Paul Celan as a representation of psychological and social processes present in the written works of Shoah survivors. It begins with an analysis of the place of writing in Jewish culture, then identifies three primary processes which operate in sequence: alienation, individuation, and integration. Coleridge’s prose works, published and unpublished, demonstrate a thorough and critical testing and understanding of British and German philosophical responses to skepticism and the ability of philosophy to progress by maintaining a double-minded and conflicted suture of both the practical or imaginative eclipse of knowledge and theorizing the hypothetical epistemological absolute that explains the relativity of facticity. Any inadequate method of inquiry stagnates within attempting a purely figurative or purely demonstrative solution to skepticism. Thus, the appropriate way to approach Coleridge’s understanding of philosophy is the struggle to make inquiry adequate though progression. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะการใช้และการเลี่ยงใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกในภาษาญี่ปุ่น ภาษาไทย และภาษาอังกฤษ โดยให้ความสำคัญกับการวิเคราะห์ประเด็นเกี่ยวกับสัดส่วนการใช้ จุดร่วมการใช้ ลักษณะการใช้ที่พบเฉพาะในแต่ละภาษา และลักษณะการเลี่ยงใช้ในแต่ละภาษา งานวิจัยนี้วิเคราะห์ผ่านคลังข้อมูลคู่ขนานที่ทำการเก็บข้อมูลจากเรื่อง “แฮร์รี่ พอตเตอร์กับนักโทษแห่งอัซคาบัน” ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ภาษาญี่ปุ่นและภาษาอังกฤษมีการใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกในสัดส่วนที่มากและใกล้เคียงกัน ในขณะที่ภาษาไทยพบสัดส่วนการใช้ที่น้อยกว่าอีกสองภาษา ส่วนจุดร่วมในการใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกของทั้งสามภาษาคือคำกริยาที่สร้างความเปลี่ยนแปลงให้กับประธานของประโยคและมีความเป็นสกรรมสูง โดยมีแนวโน้มเป็นคำกริยาความหมายเชิงลบ และประธานที่ใช้มักเป็นคำนามที่มีชีวิต ส่วนลักษณะการใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกที่พบเฉพาะในแต่ละภาษา กรณีภาษาไทยพบลักษณะการบรรยายผลลัพธ์จากการถูกกระทำร่วมกับหน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกโดยใช้โครงสร้าง “ถูก+กริยา(กระทำ)+ผลลัพธ์” กรณีภาษาญี่ปุ่นใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกเพื่อรักษาความเป็นประธานต่อเนื่องของประโยค (subject continuity) และกรณีภาษาอังกฤษใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกร่วมกับคำนามที่ไม่มีชีวิต ส่วนลักษณะการเลี่ยงใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจก กรณีภาษาญี่ปุ่นเลี่ยงใช้หน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกโดยใช้คำนามมากที่สุด ส่วนภาษาอังกฤษจะเลี่ยงใช้โดยใช้บุรุษสรรพนามร่วมกับหน่วยสร้างกรรตุวาจก ในขณะที่ภาษาไทยพบประเภทของหน่วยสร้างที่นำมาใช้ทดแทนหน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจกได้มากที่สุด เช่น หน่วยสร้าง “มี”, หน่วยสร้างกรรตุวาจก, หน่วยสร้าง “ให้” เป็นต้น โดยหน่วยสร้าง “มี” เป็นหน่วยสร้างที่สามารถใช้ทดแทนหน่วยสร้างกรรมวาจก “ถูก” ได้ในระดับหนึ่ง
