Bilingual story time programs found in local community libraries not only benefit children, they can also serve a need for L2 college students: the development of their communicative skills in an authentic environment. In addition to linguistic benefits, experiential learning has proven to prepare students for real-world skills, such as networking, mock professional experience and a sense of community engagement. This paper recounts how a world language story time program supports L2 learners’ three modes of communication, as articulated by ACTFL, and necessary for language development. Contemplating the place of remembrance and history within German environmentalism has driven the idea of this thesis and its research. My central aim is to capture at least a slice of how Germans today perceive nature, environmentalism, and themselves within the context of a cultural history that contains both a national socialist and an environmental narrative. These two narratives have, during periods of German history, intersected. While I originally thought the influence of national socialist environmental thought would still penetrate Germans’ perception of nature, my findings revealed instead that German perceptions of environmentalism and ideas of nature are rooted in …

The present study addresses language contact processes in which the phonetic systems of the languages that bilinguals speak interact. Specifically, language transfer with respect to English and German was examined, focusing on native German speakers (L1) who learned English as a second language (L2). It employed as its central method an analysis of their vowel systems, both language-specifically and cross-linguistically. Extralinguistic variables were also considered, ranging from speakers’ age of acquisition (AOA) of English to their length of residence in an English-speaking environment to their consideration of home. Representing large-scale historical traumatic events can be problematic as accounts are often subjective and biased. It is difficult to determine if the subjective historical account is factually accurate or not. When discussing the Holocaust, representation is an important factor. How is the Holocaust represented? This paper shows how literature can fill in the gaps of historical representation. I focus on psychoanalyst Dori Laub’s three levels of the witness and their role in testimony in relation to Holocaust literature. Die Ziele dieser Masterarbeit bestehen darin, dass die gesprochensprachlichen Besonderheiten in Bereichen Phonetik und Syntax, anhand der 81 authentischen Gesprache im Korpus, Plattform Gesprochenes Deutsch”, erforscht warden. Ein weiteres Ziel ist die daraus resultierenden Befunde als Grundlage der Phanomenauswahl zur Gestaltung der Unterrichtsskizzen zu verwenden. Anschliebend warden die Vorschlage uber den Einsatz des Themas “gesprochenes Deutsch” im DaF-Unterricht gegeben. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht das Konzept Leichte Sprache. In dieser Arbeit warden die Ubertragungsstrategien bei kausalen und konditionalen. Satz-verknupfungen anhand des selbst zusammengestellten Korpus sowohl theoretisch als auch empirisch untersucht. Das Korpus besteht aus insgesamt 14 Texten, sieben Texte sind in Standardsprache und sieben Texte sind ihre Ubertragung in die Leichten Sprache. Aus der Untersuchung ergibt sich, dass die Ubertragung in die Leichte Sprache die Merkmale der denotativen und pragmatischen Aquivalenz nach Koller erfults. Daruber hinaus wird ersichtlich, dass die Ubertragung in die Leichte Sprache von der Interpretation der Ubersetzenden abhangig ist. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Adjektiv-Substantiv-Kollokationen in Ortsbe-schreibungen in ausgewahlten Reisefuhrern uber Thailand. Hierbei handelt es sich um vier etablierte Reisefuhrer von vier Verlagen. Das Untersuchungskorpus umfasst insgesamt 446.580 Tokens und 38.824 Worttypen. Die Konkordanz-Software AntConc 3.5.8 wird zunachst fur die Herausfilterung einer Liste von Substantiven eingesetzt, die als Suchworter verwendet warden, wobei jedes Suchwort mindesten 100-mal im Korpus vorkommen muss. Aus 105 ausgewahlten Suchwortern warden schlieBlich 8.563 Adjektiv-Substantiv-Kollokationen ermittelt. Die Adjektiv-Substantiv-Kollokationen mit mindestens zwei Adjektivattributen werden nach Schmidts Typen der Attribuierungskomplikationen analysiert. Im Korpus lassen sich vier Typen von Attribuierungskomplikationen feststellen, namlich Koordination, Koordination mit Unterordnung, Gleichstufigkeit und Gleichstufigkeit …

Was the first documenta really beyond nationalism? documenta 1955 has been widely regarded as conciliation for the fascist legacy of the exhibition “Degenerate Art” (1937), and as an attempt to reintegrate Germany into the international arts community. This article employs published and archival sources in order to understand if and how documenta was impacted by the legacy of nationalism in post-fascist Germany. A biographic sketch of Antonio Corpora (1909-2004) shows how the purportedly “universalist” selection criteria employed by documenta erased cultural specificity and solidified nationalist conceptions of center and periphery.

Uwe Kolbe is one of the major German poets of his generation. Both part of the dissident scene in East Germany and, at the same time, fiercely independent, he early on reworked literary tradition, detailed observation, and personal experience into poems that clearly express his own poetic vision in a distinct voice. Born October 17, 1957, in East Berlin, Kolbe was drawn to writing at a young age.
