Queer: Good Gay, Bad Gay, Black Gay, White Gay?, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

"As Deadline .com bluntly put it, 'Kevin Spacey Apologizes to Anthony Rapp for Alleged Sexual Advances; Chooses to "Live As A Gay Man."' The outraged response of progressive intellectuals, activists, and cultural critics to Spacey’s twofold tweet has demonstrated, inter alia, the resilience of old school assumptions and expectations about coming out and about gay identity and gay identifications. These outraged responses have come especially from younger generations of intellectuals, activists, and critics, but also across generations, genders, and sexual orientations. Despite decades of attacks on models of gay identity that center on teleological narratives of coming out, and critiques …

Understanding the differences between Mirzoeff’s (2012) usage of visuality and Ball’s (2016) usage of invisibility can help us understand how various women’s movements throughout history have shaped and reshaped women’s roles, identities, and power. The women’s suffrage movements at the turn of the 20th century are a provocative place for identifying this shift. Women within the 1912 and 1913 suffrage movements understood the boundary points between (the history of) a women's place within society and the potential for a shift in the engendered power structures, from a patriarchal society …

The Personal Is Political: Performing Saint Joan In The Twenty-First Century, Susan Frances Russell

Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Contemporary theater makers aiming to present feminist-inflected interpretation of Shaw's Saint Joan could benefit from the practice of intertextuality: examining feminist playwrights' versions of Joan's story. Two plays by contemporary writers, Carolyn Gage's The Second Coming of Joan of Arc and Martha Kemper's Me, Miss Krause and Joan can illuminate the most pressing contemporary issues, highlighting the ways that Shaw's version overlaps with current feminist concerns, including intersectionality, positionality, and sexual assault. Such a process would empower performers and audience members alike, and would help playwrights, directors, and dramaturgs avoid some of the pitfalls exhibited in the recent rock musical …

In addition, the Project has embraced a community service-learning model to guide our field, laboratory, and outreach activities. Students learn …

Teaching Feminist Research Methods: A Comment And An Evaluation, Shannon N. Davis, Angela Hattery 2018 George Mason University

Teaching Feminist Research Methods: A Comment And An Evaluation, Shannon N. Davis, Angela Hattery

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This paper begins by interrogating the question of how research methods become labeled as feminist. Building on this knowledge, we detail how this investigation guided our implementation of a new feminist research methods course sequence in a Women and Gender Studies program.
