According to the Interface Hypothesis in the field of bilingualism, the interface connecting a linguistic module with a language-external domain (e.g., syntax-discourse) will present prolonged difficulties for adult bilingual learners, as compared with the interface connecting language-internal modules (e.g., syntax-semantics). This study tested whether the Interface Hypothesis is applicable to the acquisition of Mandarin Chinese as a heritage language. An internet-based acceptability judgment task (AJT) was administered to 58 advanced and intermediate adult Chinese heritage speakers to collect data in accuracy and reaction time to investigate the adult heritage speakers’ mastery of referential nominal expressions regulated at the syntax-semantics and …

Setsuko Koizumi (1868–1932) was the daughter of a Japanese samurai family in Matsué. In 1891 she married a foreigner — Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904) — and their union lasted 13 years and produced three children. Hearn adopted her family name, becoming Koizumi Yakumo 小泉八雲,and spent those years in Japan writing, teaching, and achieving international recognition. Setsuko’s Reminiscences tells something of the couple’s moves and travels, but focuses mostly on the character, habits, and eccentricities of her husband. Although research has established that students of color have unique experiences in their multicultural training, few studies have examined the experiences and needs of specific subgroups of students of color. This study examined Chinese American psychology trainees’ experiences in multicultural education. Qualitative data was collected from individual semi-structured interviews with Chinese American doctoral students (N = 6). Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to understand participants’ perceptions of their experiences in multicultural courses. In this thesis, I focus on the themes of family memory and history in relation to the Japanese diaspora, and how performance becomes an invaluable method of expression and discovery when words are inadequate. To explore these themes, I analyze the performances of three Japanese and Japanese American artists, each of whom expresses their stories through a variety of genres, ranging from experimental short film and documentary to musical theater. The article traces an EnviroLab Asia research trip designed to learn how “traditional” music and “folk” dance had been used to transform a loose configuration of farms into an integrated organic agricultural cooperative. This trip was second part of a multi-pronged case-study project looking at music, agriculture and sustainability in Indonesia and China. The importance of this research trip was to build collaborative relationships with our colleagues in Shanxi so that we will be able to produce interdisciplinary research with multinational partners in the future.

On 7 July 1937, Japanese forces based in Manchuria charged southward towards Beijing, invading north China and hence starting the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45). On 7 December 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, transforming the Second Sino-Japanese War into the Pacific War. As a result of Pearl Harbor, the status of Allied citizens living in China at the time changed from neutral to ‘enemy aliens’. These Allied citizens included individuals and their families who worked in China as government officials, executives, engineers and Christian missionaries. Since the 1947 Constitution was drafted at the behest of the Allied General Headquarters led by the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP), it is only fitting to scrutinize the media directly under it. One of the policies that should have affected Japanese women’s status is the Labor Standard Law. Mei Lan-fang was the most well-known Beijing Opera practitioner specializing in the impersonation of historical and mythological female characters. His captivating performance style is known as “The School of Mei”. It balances the external stage presence and internal precision and attends to the minutiae. This essay evaluates and critiques the studies of Chinese imperial law in line with Edward Said’s proposition of ‘Orientalism’. It identifies three major stages: the classical legal Orientalism, emphasising the heterogeneity of Chinese and Western laws based on Western values; the ‘neo-legal Orientalism’, stressing the homogeneity of the two by taking Western culture also as the assessment standard; and Oriental legalism, seeking Chinese subjectivity with Chinese perspectives and resources. Learning a language can be hard. Learning a language that contains tones to convey meaning is even harder. This dissertation presents a novel methodology for creating a language practice using augmented reality that has never been used before. The design of a new app in AR and non-AR versions can evaluate the same practice methodology. This methodology was applied to new software and was examined in regard to the importance of this software. 馬禮遜（1782–1834）是第一位來華的基督教傳教士及牧師，一生致力宣揚基督福音和研究漢語。馬禮遜的最大成就，莫過於研究當時粵語和粵音。1815年，馬禮遜出版《通用漢言之法》，當中記載338個以粵音標注的漢字，可謂有史以來第一本記下粵方言語音資料的文獻，其重要性不言而喻。1828年，馬禮遜出版《廣東省土話字彙》，進一步記錄當時粵音和粵各地區方言的資料，更是奠定馬禮遜於早期粵語及粵音研究的重要地位。

本論文先介紹研究緣起、粵音概況及研究方法，之後介紹及分析馬禮遜《通用漢言之法》和《廣東省土話字彙》的音韻系統，與現今粵音的聲母及韻母作比較，既集中研究與展現二百年前的粵音概況，亦可令讀者思考粵語及粵音應當何去何從。

An overview of how friendship has been represented and assessed in the Confucian tradition, and particularly in classical Confucian texts such as the Analects and the Mencius. Themes covered include the relationship between the family and friendship, the ambivalence towards friendship in imperial China, and the connection between friendship and the Confucian ideal of personal cultivation. The chapter finishes by exploring novel conceptions of friendship and human relatedness suggested by the Confucian tradition.

本文試圖以《江南女性別集》中歸懋儀、駱綺蘭、汪端三位女詩人為代表，探討清代知識女性在經歷家道中落、喪夫之痛、被迫走出閨閣之後，以何種姿態在禮教殘酷的社會中生存。歸懋儀憑藉才名游走於江浙間任閨塾師，擔起養家重任；駱綺蘭雖為寡婦，卻能靠自己的雙手自活，廣結文人閨秀，建立女詩人社交圈；汪端欲通過選詩修史來達到不朽，向道問禪以求慰藉。這種或身體或心理的流動給予了她們獨特的寫作風格，兼有女性的細膩善感和不輸男性的豪壯大氣。分別聯繫其詩作和處境、命運展開討論，展現詩中的女性意識，觀女性對遼闊天地的所見所聞所思，女性詩人的作品價值方得以表彰和揭示。

Hanbok is the traditional fashion of South Korea, and literally translates to “Korean clothing.” Once worn every day, today hanbok is reserved for special occasions and holidays; however new “modern” versions of the attire are becoming more and more popular for everyday wear. This new iteration of the traditional clothing created a new vernacular of Korean nationalism and “Koreanness” through the incorporation of modern fashion trends and traditional Korean aesthetics. From 1945 onward, post-war artists in Japan encountered two interrelated challenges: to both adjust to the war’s aftermath, and also to create a new visual language which expressed new ideas and emotions. For women artists in Japan, this time of distinct culture change allowed for a re-defining of their role in the art community as well as society.
