In contemporary China, demographers estimate that 30 million men are single because there are simply not enough women in the Chinese population, and the 2020 Chinese census shows that there are 34.9 million more men than women. These men are called guanggun, which can be directly translated to “bare sticks/branches,” a slur that indicates a lack of marriage and sex. In this project, I demonstrate that guanggun’s singlehood marks them as the marginalized at the intersection of heteronormativity, patriarchy, globalizing capitalism, and pronatalist governmentality. In a highly heteronormative and patrilineal culture, guanggun are branded as abnormal/incomplete. However, because …

This honors thesis studies trends in the localization of “Japaneseness” -- aspects of Japanese culture -- in Japanese videos published in the West over the 40-year history of Japanese home console video games. Through case study analysis and comparisons of Japanese versions of video games with their Western counterparts that span from the mid-1980s to the present day, this thesis examines how Japanese video game companies choose to either remove or keep aspects of Japanese culture in the West, and how Western players respond to Japaneseness in their video games. This research investigates the representation of queerness and how individuals' different social identities produce different kinds of tensions among queer people through the concept of intersectionality. The research analyzes the film No Regret, White Night and Night Flight. The analysis includes two themes: 1) The Violence and Harassment against Queer and 2) The Representation of Gender and Sexuality. The study seeks to understand how intersecting components are represented along with the two themes. The past 3 years of the COVID-19 global pandemic has seen a rise in anti-Asian racism and hate. However, in Ohio, where Asians make up only 2.2% of the population, there is little visibility for Asians and Asian Americans. This study aims to document the diverse experiences of students and staff of East Asian descent, at The College of Wooster, during the past three years of the pandemic. My study focuses on a specific demographic of both international and domestic “Asian” identities. 論曹文軒兒童文學作品裏「身體受虐」對兒童本位觀的體現, Qianyi Luo

曹文軒，1954年出生在江蘇省鹽城市，2016年獲得安徒生獎，該獎素有諾貝爾兒童文學獎的美譽。其創作的兒童文學作品有《草房子》、《細米》、《青銅葵花》等，作品善於觀察兒童的生活，用詩意的語言和悲憫情懷展現兒童生活悲傷和苦難的一面。大多學者研究曹文軒作品的語言技巧和主旨思想，或人物形象的塑造，缺乏從創作理念的角度切入論述，亦欠缺人物的身體書寫分析。

本文以曹文軒作品裏的兒童身體受虐為研究對象，以兒童本位觀的創作理念對照分析。第一章為緒論，分別説明本文之寫作緣起、兒童文學領域對兒童本位觀和身體敘事的研究，及本文採用的研究方法；第二章以曹文軒作品中疾病、殘疾和死亡三種身體受虐形式，探討它們如何與兒童本位觀的創作視角、兒童價值和個體意義三個層面相呼應；第三章承接上章從曹文軒作品內部對於身體書寫和兒童本位觀的分析，擴大至各個時期兒童文學對於兒童本位觀的接受——先從五四時期的兒童的發現開始，後闡釋各個時期對於兒童視角和成人視角的選擇。第四章為結論，整合全文中心要點。

一七五五年，伏爾泰把紀君祥的元雜劇《趙氏孤兒》改寫為《中國孤兒》，並在劇本中重塑中國傳統。本文剖析《中國孤兒》之劇本，探析伏爾泰對中國傳統重新構建之意涵，並從啟蒙思想角度出發，思考「忠」觀念在當今社會的意涵和效用。本文指出，伏爾泰改編《趙氏孤兒》的出發點是為了匡正當時法國腐敗墮落的政冶風俗。他借鑒中國文化的可取之處，結合本人的思想哲學，並對中國傳統加以重塑，其目的是為了宣揚啟蒙思想。本文並指出在現今社會，傳統「忠」觀念應以理性主義為準繩，才能與時並進，發揮最大效用。

本文選取並討論余華90年代的三篇長篇小說《細雨中呼喊》、《活著》和《許三觀賣血記》，並探討小說中的小人物書寫。文章分四部分：引言部分簡略介紹余華，然後闡述論文研究背景、方法及概況；正文部分主要介紹小人物在文學上的重要性，以及所選三部作品中小人物的特點；之後重點分析余華筆下的小人物之形象轉變，以及探討余華三部作品如何善用不同的視角達到寫作目的，來呈現作品的人物角力之轉變，最後總結全文。

This article investigates the way in which Cuban literature reflected on indigenous people during the early half of the nineteenth century and uses the symbol of the Amerindians to demonstrate a moral disjuncture between them and the colonizer. In this article, I call attention to the way Cuban independentists and Spanish nationalists used this figure to support their views and thus created a split in the Cuban creole imagination. This paper explores the concepts of "Border Culture" and "Borderlands" by Gloria Anzaldúa in Soy la Avon Lady and Other Stories, Homicide Survivors Picnic and Other Stories, by Lorraine López and the novel Mijito Doesn’t Live Here Anymore by Jaime Martínez. The paper argues that the Mexican American character in the southeast of the United States lives in the "Borderlands" and practices a "Border Culture" because they don't follow the traditional stereotypical role of the Mexican American character within the literary canon of both the dominant culture and Chicana/o literature.

East/west comparative philosophy often focuses on the differences between philosophies as finished states which, though effective at showing differences in thought, emphasizes the otherness of foreign traditions. In order to establish meaningful similarities between the development on eastern and western traditions, I compared the development of American liberalism (1651-1776 CE) and Chinese Confucianism and Daoism (772-221 BCE), focusing on the similarities between social contract to enlightenment philosophers and the early to late Hundred Schools of Thought Confucian and Daoist philosophers. This essay traces the transformations of Japan’s self-image through the figure of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. As Japan in the late 600s replaced its name granted by China—“the land of dwarfs”—with “the land of harmony,” its desire to positively repackage its smallness illuminates how the “short and ugly” Yoshitsune in Heike monogatari (fourteenth century) morphed into a “small but beautiful” youth by the fifteenth century. Furthermore, the modern imperial regime repurposed the child Yoshitsune (Ushiwaka-maru) for propaganda by inundating children’s media with the image of Ushiwaka-maru fighting Benkei, which symbolized the “small but mighty” Japan subjugating the massive “West.”

An overview of how friendship has been represented and assessed in the Confucian tradition, and particularly in classical Confucian texts such as the Analects and the Mencius. Themes covered include the relationship between the family and friendship, the ambivalence towards friendship in imperial China, and the connection between friendship and the Confucian ideal of personal cultivation. The chapter finishes by exploring novel conceptions of friendship and human relatedness suggested by the Confucian tradition.

This study is an effort to turn to older Chinese immigrant women aged 60 and above, one of the most marginalized groups in American society, to recognize their humanity and rediscover the unseen and unheard. It asks what we can learn from their life stories, particularly from the ways in which each experience(d) being a woman in different societal systems. The objectives of this research are to study the behavior of the lottery consumers between Thai and Korean consumers. The number of participants of Thai and Korean consumers should be separated.
