Mistress Gu The Tigress: Warrior Women & Knight-Errantry In Outlaws Of The Marsh, Ryan K. Christenson 2024 University of Utah

Mistress Gu The Tigress: Warrior Women & Knight-Errantry In Outlaws Of The Marsh, Ryan K. Christenson

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

Outlaws of the Marsh, also commonly known as Water Margin, is one of the four most beloved classic novels of Chinese literature, most frequently attributed to the 14th-century writer Shi Nai’an. In this novel, one of the more relatively obscure characters among the 108 outlaws of Mount Liang is Gu Dasao “the Tigress,” a heroic woman who is normally characterized as a “woman general” (nüjiang) along with the other two prominent women in the novel, “Ten Feet of Steel” Hu Sanniang and Sun Erniang “the Witch.” This characterization has endured to this day, perhaps due to tradition or simply convenience. …

Envisioning Dynamic Cultural Platforms: Strategic Integration Of Contemporary Art In Japan's Socio-Economic Landscape, Shota Hachisako

MA Theses

In this tale of transformative potential, the dissertation opens with Japan's unique juxtaposition of a burgeoning technological landscape against a modestly-sized art market. It envisions contemporary art as a dynamic force, capable of revolutionizing Japan's socio-economic fabric. This narrative of hope delves into how art, in Japan's context, can redefine corporate identities, fuel social innovation, and adapt to the digital age. The study advocates for an increased investment in the creative arts, seeing it as a key to merging Japan's rich cultural heritage with its economic aspirations. It paints a future where art not only enhances educational growth and international …

Theorizing Cultural Appropriation: Complications Of Globalization And Power In Hybrid K-Pop, David C. Oh 2024 Syracuse University

Theorizing Cultural Appropriation: Complications Of Globalization And Power In Hybrid K-Pop, David C. Oh

Media Studies - All Scholarship

The purpose of this paper is to theorize cultural appropriation using a critical perspective that centers structural inequity and uneven global power by examining the case of South Korean media. This paper argues that cultural appropriation is a particular form of intercultural borrowing that relies on structural inequities of power, whereby a more powerful culture takes from a less powerful culture in such a way that it causes structural and representational harm to the borrowed culture. To clarify cultural appropriation as a particular form of cultural borrowing, I provide a typology of different forms of cultural borrowing before positing six …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In the dynamic realm of the Korean entertainment industry, where glitz and glamour seamlessly intertwine with the personal lives of celebrities, a profound dichotomy unfolds. This research delves into the nuances of this narrative, focusing on how Korean celebrities strive for societal ideals of perfection while navigating the relentless scrutiny of an ever-watchful public eye. This study emerges in response to the evolving landscape where the pursuit of idealized images intersects with the dark side of cyberbullying, an escalating phenomenon with tangible consequences on the mental well-being of these public figures. Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki (Strange Tales Of The Crescent Moon), Roger Thomas 2024 Illinois State University

Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki (Strange Tales Of The Crescent Moon), Roger Thomas

Faculty Publications – Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Forced by family circumstances to abandon his samurai status, Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848) found his niche in life as a writer of popular fiction, eventually becoming the most prolific author of works in the yomihon genre, which consisted largely of historical romances. His dream of eventually restoring his family to its hereditary status is reflected in many of his works, beginning especially with Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki (Strange Tales of the Crescent Moon), a novel appearing serially in sixty-eight chapters between 1807 and 1811 whose hero, the historical Minamoto no Tametomo (1139-1170), is drawn from a variety of sources, both standard …

An Integrated Theory Of Happiness: The Yang Zhu Chapter Of The Liezi, Devin K. JOSHI 2024 Singapore Management University

An Integrated Theory Of Happiness: The Yang Zhu Chapter Of The Liezi, Devin K. Joshi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article examines the integrated approach to theorizing happiness in the Yang Zhu chapter of the book associated with the Daoist master Liezi. While ancient critics famously denounced Yang Zhu as an amoral, pleasure-seeking hedonist, I argue the Yang Zhu chapter offers an individually rational but socially non-conformist approach to well-being of considerable relevance to contemporary scholarship on happiness. Not only does the chapter offer an intriguing and counter-intuitive argument about what constitutes and causes well-being, but its philosophical implications address a large number of inescapably foundational conceptual questions that can serve as metrics for evaluating theories of happiness in …

(Re)Producing Orientalism: Industry Logic Of Chinese Mobile Game Re-Skins In The Global App Empire, Yizhou Xu 2024 Old Dominion University

(Re)Producing Orientalism: Industry Logic Of Chinese Mobile Game Re-Skins In The Global App Empire, Yizhou Xu

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Through the case study of the mobile title Game of Sultans, this article examines the proliferation of iterative and copycat games through the practice of reskins in the mobile game industry. Based on year-long autoethnographic fieldwork working in a Chinese mobile game company, I provide an on-the-ground perspective of how Orientalist representations in reskinned games are instrumentalized through the roles of “cultural brokers” and the work of localization for Western markets. By taking a theoretical and technological understanding of reskins, I argue that reskinned games, as a form of industrial mimicry, while an important aspect of standardized game production, …

Methodologizing Transnationality: Relational Writing As Collective Inquiry, Sun Young Lee, Minhye Son, Taeyeon Kim, Jin Kyeong Jung, Soo Bin Jang 2024 Wichita State University

Methodologizing Transnationality: Relational Writing As Collective Inquiry, Sun Young Lee, Minhye Son, Taeyeon Kim, Jin Kyeong Jung, Soo Bin Jang

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

How can we take transnationality as a space of in-betweenness to generate new possibilities, moving beyond geographically bounded spans between countries? This article presents five authors’ collective inquiry on transnational positionalities, which we practiced through the relational, transformative, and reflective writing of the self in a community space. We staged the collaborative writing into two processes: the emergent process of thematic writing and the relay writing. Interweaving “I” and “we” voices that cannot be captured through categorical thinking, our collaborative quest resists normative identity politics, proposing writing as a method of collective inquiry for the nuanced understanding of the transnationality …

Critiquing The Discourse On Women In The Edo Era: Intertextual Studies Of Ariyoshi’S Hanaoka Seishū No Tsuma, Nina Alia Ariefa, Melani Budianta, Dhita Hapsarani

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Under the Tokugawa clan, Japanese women’s position was declined throughout the Edo era (1603–1868). Almost one century afterwards, a female writer called Ariyoshi Sawako (1931–1984) raised the issue of female position in the Edo era through the novel Hanaoka Seishū no Tsuma (HSNT). This article will focus on two things. First is the exploration of the discourse of women in the Edo Era through three texts written during the era. The second part of the article will discuss the intertextuality of novel, with the discourse on women in the Edo era. New historicism method and Foucault’s concepts of discourse and …

The classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, written by Wú Chéng’ēn in the 16th century of the Ming Dynasty, is an influential work in Chinese culture. The main character of the novel, the Monkey King Sun Wukong, has become a highly popular character and been adapted into various cultural products. Sun Wukong’s popularity was adapted into three films directed by Cheang Pou-soi, namely Monkey King 1 (2014), Monkey King 2 (2016), and Monkey King 3 (2018). Buddhist Music As A Contested Site: The Transmission Of Teochew Buddhist Music Between China And Singapore, Jie Zhang

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

In the Chaozhou City Gazetteer of Buddhism & Chaozhou Kaiyuan Monastery Gazetteer published in 1992, the then Abbot of the Kaiyuan Monastery, Shi Huiyuan 释慧原 heavily condemned the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) monk Shi Kesheng 释可声 (date unknown) for "starting the sins among laities in the Chaozhou region who dared transgressing (the Buddhist doctrines) and became chant leaders in a flaming mouth ceremony.” Why was the Abbot so upset with a fellow monk back in history? What did Kesheng do, and what were the implications of him starting this "transgression"? This article investigates the history of the international traffic of Buddhist …

Living In Untranslatability--Performance Art In China And Usa, Ziyun Ma 2023 Rhode Island School of Design

Living In Untranslatability--Performance Art In China And Usa, Ziyun Ma

Masters Theses

This thesis embodies discontinuities in performance art and its non-equivalent Chinese term “行 为艺术” between language and cultural context into a migrating journey. A comparative analysis on the disciplinary history of performance art studies in the US and China laid a foundation in exploring the dynamics of marginality in two contexts. Extracting from the narrative mechanism and body view of Chinese performance art, I demonstrate how the philosophy of living (生) inspired many artistic creation, which also echoes my research journey. And from our mutual living experience, I pose the concept of constructive untranslatability that applies positionality and situated knowledge …

Possibilities Of Performance: Sexuality, Pastiche, And Feminist Thought In Kurahashi Yumiko’S “Keiko-San Series”, Emily Frances Levine 2023 Washington University in St. Louis

Possibilities Of Performance: Sexuality, Pastiche, And Feminist Thought In Kurahashi Yumiko’S “Keiko-San Series”, Emily Frances Levine

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Most critical accounts of the life and works of Kurahashi Yumiko (1935-2005) cite her self-acknowledged turn to conservatism in 1970 to explain why the style and content of her writing changed dramatically at that time. This dissertation expands our understanding of this so-called “transformation” through an examination of Kurahashi’s “Keiko-san Series,” a set of nine texts originally published between 1970 and 2002. Despite its substantial share in Kurahashi’s collected works, the “Series” has largely flown under the critical radar; in filling this void in Kurahashi scholarship, this dissertation asks the question “What position does the ‘Keiko-san Series’ occupy in Kurahashi’s …

State Charter School Law Scores As A Predictor Of Illegal Activity Within The Chartering Sector, David Stashevsky 2023 Indiana State University

State Charter School Law Scores As A Predictor Of Illegal Activity Within The Chartering Sector, David Stashevsky

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

State charter school policy is influenced through a collaboration between advocacy groups and state legislators. Charter school advocacy groups have an inherent bias toward deregulation and autonomy. Two advocacy groups, the Center for Education Reform (CER) and the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (NAPCS), each conduct annual analyses on state charter school laws using their own model charter law as the comparator. Each group has developed a rubric of indicators with sub-scores which combine to form an overall state score. Higher scores indicate a closer adherence to the advocacy group’s model charter law. The charter school sector in the …

Chunhong Wang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Chinese culture advances by drawing cultural resources from different regions at different times, which come together to constitute its totality. Scholars and officials in ancient times were both traditional and realistic: the former meaning that they were influenced by the scholarship of a certain region or school of thought; the latter referring to their responses to their immediate realities. In life’s twists and turns, the choices they made were necessarily linked to cultural lineage or reflected the influence of cultural ideas vividly, and their writings and behaviors were in sync with their knowledge structures, intellectual cultivations, and ideologies, especially …

Shulin Zhong

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

This article reinvestigates the case of Zhong Hui slandering Ji Kang and discusses A New Account of Tales of the World’s unique compilation style and philosophy and its appreciation and representation of historical figures, which illustrate its stand-alone value different from that of Annals of the Three Kingdoms and Book of Jin. Previous research has argued that Zhong Hui’s slander was the direct cause of Ji Kang’s death and has drawn critiques to the former. This article reads the records about Zhong Hui in A New Account of Tales of the World with references to other classical …

Jingyi Cao

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Ming-dynasty scholar Jiang Yikui 蔣一葵 compiled the Supplementary Records Compiled in the Yaoshan Study 堯山堂外紀 in one hundred volumes. Organized primarily around individual figures, this compilation encompassed a vast collection of poems and anecdotes. Notably, the sources of these select materials were not provided, rendering it challenging to discern their origins or understand the methodologies adopted in the compilation. Supplementary Records compiled in the Yaoshan Study records from varied genres of literary sources, such as Returning to the Farm: Remarks on Poetry Records of the West Lake Tour Additional Records of the West Lake Tour 西湖遊覽志餘, and …
