“Always Up Against”: A Study Of Veteran Wpas And Social Resilience, Shari J. Stenberg, Deborah Minter

This essay reports on an interview-based study of ten veteran WPAs, whose three decades of service spans neoliberalism’s growing influence on universities. Our findings trace their enactment of social resilience, a dynamic, relational process that allowed them, even in the face of constraint, to act and to preserve key commitments.

This research examines and contributes to recent work by Matthew Jockers and Gabi Kirilloff on the relationship between gender and action in the nineteenth-century novel. Jockers and Kirilloff use dependency parsing to extract verb and gendered pronoun pairs (“he said,” “she walked,” etc.). They then build a classification model to predict the gender of a pronoun based on the verb being performed. This present study examines the novels that were categorized as outliers by the classification model to gain a better understanding of the way the observed trends function at the level of individual narratives. Rooted in the performative of Speech Act Theory, this interdisciplinary study crafts a new model to compare the work we do with words when we protest: across genres (chants, songs, poetry, prose), from different geographies (Turkey, U.S., West Germany, Romania, Great Britain, Guatemala, Northern Ireland) and from different languages (Turkish, Spanish, English, German, Romanian, Ki’che’, Irish Gaeilge). This model generates two new concepts: pragmatic legitimacy, when a hearer recognizes a speech act, regardless of genre, as one of protest; and convocativity, the effect of convoking hearers into distinct camps, creating degrees of solidarity or distance on the protest issue. The Evolution Of Personal Pledging For The Freemen Of Norwich, 1365-1441, Ruth H. Frost

Quidditas

This paper examines the evolution of the personal pledging system used by newly admitted freemen, or citizens, of Norwich between 1365 and 1441. It argues that in the late fourteenth century new freemen chose their own sureties, and a large, diverse body of men acted as their pledges. The personal pledging system changed early in the fifteenth century, however, and from 1420 to 1441 civic office holders, particularly the sheriffs, served as the vast majority of pledges. This alteration to the pledging system coincided with changes to the structure and composition of Norwich’s government, and it paralleled a decrease in …

Physical exile certainly was a painful reality for Xu Xu. Restorative nostalgia might to some extent have informed his literary activity in those years. However, nostalgia in Xu Xu’s postwar fiction, I will argue in this paper, constitutes above all the expression of a quest for a purely aesthetic utopia that had already begun to take shape in his pre-war oeuvre and that came to full fruition in his post-war fiction. Sins, Sex, And Secrets: The Legacy Of Confession From The Decameron To The Heptaméron, Nora Martin Peterson

A quick digital search for the term ‘confession’ in Boccaccio’s Decameron yields 75 results (Decameron Web). Confession in Boccacio’s text is conspicuously present and, I argue, not coincidental: it highlights the increased attention to the sacrament after the Fourth Lateran Council made annual confession mandatory in 1215. Decameron 1.1 depicts a false confession performed by a wicked man on his deathbed. His confessor follows the protocol of confession manuals, which began to appear in increasing number following 1215, but his interpretive skills do not extend beyond the questions he is bound by protocol to ask. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีและแนวทางการแปลคำสร้างใหม่จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยในวรรณกรรมเยาวชนชุดแฮร์รี่ พอตเตอร์ ประพันธ์โดยเจ.เค. โรว์ลิ่ง และศึกษาเปรียบเทียบคำแปลคำสร้างใหม่ที่พบในฉบับแปลของสุมาลี บำรุงสุข วลีพร หวังซื่อกุล และงามพรรณ เวชชาชีวะ รวมถึงศึกษาลักษณะและแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์คำสร้างใหม่ในวรรณกรรมชุดนี้ ผู้วิจัยใช้แนวคิดเรื่องการสร้างและการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์กเป็นเกณฑ์ในการคัดสรรรวบรวมคำสร้างใหม่ จัดแบ่งประเภทคำสร้างใหม่ในต้นฉบับ และเป็นแนวทางในการวิเคราะห์คำแปล คำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปล ควบคู่ไปกับแนวทางการสร้างคำในภาษาไทย แนวคิดสมมูลภาพในการแปล แนวคิดบริบทในการแปล และแนวคิดเรื่องลักษณะของวรรณกรรมเยาวชนแนวแฟนตาซี ผลการวิจัยพบว่าคำสร้างใหม่ในต้นฉบับมี 5 ประเภทคือ คำเดิมที่สื่อความหมายใหม่ คำที่ร้อยเรียงขึ้นมาใหม่ คำที่แปรมาจากรากคำอื่นรวมทั้งการสนธิคำ คำปรากฏร่วมใหม่ และคำสร้างใหม่จากอักษรย่อ และพบกลวิธีการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปล 6 กลวิธีคือ การทับศัพท์ การแปลตรงตัว การแปลตรงตัวประกอบทับศัพท์ การแปลตรงตัวประกอบตีความ การแปลตรงตัวและใช้อักษรย่อตามคำแปล และการตีความและ สรุปเก็บใจความ ในการเปรียบเทียบกลวิธีการแปลของนักแปลพบว่านักแปลใช้ทุกกลวิธีในการแปล คำสร้างใหม่ไปในทิศทางเดียวกันโดยพิจารณาจากลักษณะเด่นในองค์ประกอบของคำควบคู่ไปกับการพิจารณาบริบท และในการแปลคำสร้างใหม่แต่ละประเภท นักแปลใช้กลวิธีในการแปลที่หลากหลายโดยจะมีอย่างน้อยหนึ่งกลวิธีที่นักแปลใช้เหมือนกัน นอกจากนั้นเป็นการใช้กลวิธีที่เหมือนกันระหว่างสุมาลีกับวลีพร และ สุมาลีกับงามพรรณ เนื่องมาจากพบคำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปลของสุมาลีมากที่สุด

In this thesis, I propose three parallel projects. The first is an introductory exploration of the narrative conventions that have become, over time, established tropes in Fantasy Fiction as a brief discussion of my conscious strategy to reject the normative structures set in modern fantasy literature in my own fiction project “Era of Black.” Second is an excerpt from my novel-in-progress, in which I deploy specific stylistic and narrative gestures that mark my effort to move beyond the received “rules” of the Fantasy mode.
