Strata: Layered Support Through Community, Resources, & Design, Jenna M. Sawyer

Theses and Dissertations

Strata reimagines transitional housing as a layered, responsive ecosystem that supports the holistic well-being of individuals experiencing housing insecurity. Inspired by the vertical structure of a forest canopy, the design integrates biophilic principles, trauma-informed strategies, and sustainable practices to create a dignified, inclusive environment. Located in the historic Sauer’s Factory in Richmond, Virginia, the project leverages adaptive reuse to ground the building in local context while addressing systemic gaps in supportive housing. Public amenities, such as a hygiene center, café, learning spaces, and a free store, encourage community integration and reduce stigma, while flexible private units and calming retreat spaces …

Quantity Surveying students are required to study a vast spectrum of modules during their programme of study. Perhaps one of the most important taught modules on a Quantity Surveying programme and a core professional competency relates to building measurement. Many early stage quantity surveying students are introduced to building measurement via the concept of manual take-off which offers students a good grounding in the basic skills and good practices required to successfully measure a building project. However, manual measurement ultimately is no longer used in practice in any meaningful capacity and teaching it is a time-consuming process. The research explores …

Crafting Democratic Futures

This document explains how systemic racism and discriminatory policies from the Civil War & Reconstruction period through the 20th century prevented African Americans in Spartanburg from building wealth through land ownership and home equity. It details barriers such as Black Codes, sharecropping, convict leasing, exclusion from New Deal programs, discriminatory housing policies, and urban renewal projects that displaced Black neighborhoods without providing equitable opportunities for economic advancement.

Student Centers: The Intersection Of Campus Ecology And Sense Of Community, Caitlyn A. Wine 2025 Georgia Southern University

Student Centers: The Intersection Of Campus Ecology And Sense Of Community, Caitlyn A. Wine

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Student centers are more than physical structures as they function as dynamic environments that serve as the hearthstone of campus, providing spaces for students to gather, connect, and engage. However, their role in fostering students’ sense of community remains underexplored. Grounded in campus ecology theory, this study explored whether time spent in the student center and specific forms of interaction predicted students’ sense of community. A quantitative survey design was employed, the Student Center and Sense of Community Intersection Survey (SCSCIS), to assess student center usage and perceived sense of community. Results indicated that time spent in the student center …

Breathing A New Life Into Industrialized Cities: Adapting Warehouses In The Inland Empire, Mazzy Rosenast 2025 Pitzer College

Breathing A New Life Into Industrialized Cities: Adapting Warehouses In The Inland Empire, Mazzy Rosenast

Pitzer Senior Theses

This thesis explores adaptive reuse as a design strategy to repurpose aging warehouse infrastructure in the Inland Empire, specifically Rancho Cucamonga, in order to reclaim and reintegrate the urban fabric around community needs, rather than defaulting to demolition and erasure. As urban spaces become increasingly saturated, resources dwindle, and environmental concerns escalate, the need to creatively build and repurpose our urban fabric becomes a critical conversation among architects, urban planners, and designers. The Inland Empire (IE) - comprising Riverside and San Bernardino Counties - has been overtaken by the logistics industry, transforming its landscape into a patchwork of freeways, cargo …

Visions Of The Garden: Transforming The Former Claremont Golf Course Into The Coastal Sage Mosaic, Ella C. Kim

Pitzer Senior Theses

A thirty-three-acre parcel of land sits at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at a vulnerable wildland-urban interface (WUI), raising key ecological concerns. This parcel, a former golf course, is the focused site for this conceptual landscape and restoration plan. The now-neglected site has no proposed plans for restoration or development yet holds significant potential for transformation. Stakeholders’ conflicting visions range from land preservation, ecological restoration, Indigenous land rights, commodification for revenue and development, and prioritizing the needs of the natural environment in coexistence with modern human enjoyment. The conceptual plan addresses these critical considerations in verbal and visual …

High Voltage Circuit Breaker Arc Modelling State Of Art, Raghdaa I. Elbahy, Ahmed M. Abdelbaset, Ebrahim A. Badran, Mansour H. Abdel-Rahman 2025 Electrical Power & Machines Department, High Institute of Engineering, El-Shorouk Academy, Cairo, Egypt

High Voltage Circuit Breaker Arc Modelling State Of Art, Raghdaa I. Elbahy, Ahmed M. Abdelbaset, Ebrahim A. Badran, Mansour H. Abdel-Rahman

Mansoura Engineering Journal

High-voltage (HV) circuit breakers (CBs) are critical for safe and reliable power system operation. However, electric arcs formed during current interruption pose a challenge due to their complex, non-linear behavior. These arcs can hinder CB efficiency and cause equipment damage. To address this, understanding and modeling arc properties are essential. This paper explores existing methods for modeling and simulating electric arcs in HV CBs, including physical, black box, and parameter models. By analyzing these approaches, the paper emphasizes the importance of arc modeling for CB optimization and outlines the physical, mathematical, and software requirements for effective modeling and simulation.

Geopolymer Concrete Performance Utilising Waste Glass: A Review, Al-Saeed Abdelsalam Maaty, Mariam Farouk Ghazy, Mohamed Gamal Eldmarny

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The cement and concrete industry significantly contribute to global environmental challenges, accounting for 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions and extensive resource depletion. Geopolymer concrete has emerged as a sustainable alternative, offering up to 80% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional concrete by utilizing industrial by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blastfurnace slag. Additionally, over 130 million tons of glass are produced globally each year, with 79% discarded in landfills due to issues like color inconsistencies and compositional defects. Incorporating waste glass into geopolymer concrete addresses critical waste management issues while enhancing mechanical, durability, and microstructural …

Optimization Of Persulfate Activation System Using Ferrous Sulfate For Toc Removal From Real Domestic Wastewater, Mohamed Fouad, Mohamed Mossad, Mohamed Gar Alalm, Mahmoud Samy

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The reuse of treated wastewater is increasingly recognized as a sustainable solution to address global water shortage. This study investigates the effectiveness of a persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) using sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) activated by ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) as a tertiary treatment for secondary effluents. Real municipal wastewater was collected from Agouzain Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt. A Box Benkhen design (BBD) was employed to optimize three key variables: FeSO4 dose (0.5–2.0 g/L), Na2S2O8 dose (0.5–2.0 g/L), and pH (3.0–9.0), with total organic carbon (TOC) removal as the main response. Under optimized conditions (0.50 g/L FeSO4, 2.00 …
