Riverside Ranch was one of the first homesteads built in Colorado's Roaring Fork River Valley in the 1880s. The project site was a stop for the railroad and stage coaches travelling to nearby Aspen and a successful agricultural and ranching operation for decades. In the mid-twentieth century, the site transitioned into use as an asphalt mixing plant for the Colorado Department of Transportation. When the landscape architect began work, the site was essentially a brownfield in need of rehabilitation as it was host to multiple rundown historic buildings and remnants of the asphalt plant. There are numerous urban problems that could not be addressed in single use development. Mixed use development as a new theory claims to have the solutions to the urban issues associated with single use development. However, mixed used developments have been criticized for also failing to address their purported claims. This research focuses on analyzing and evaluating the tenets of mixed-use development to determine whether claims of accommodating mixed-income residents, increased density, improved racial diversity, provision of affordable housing, and improved employment trends are achieved. The formation of urban areas is a function of locations of residence and workplaces. Urban areas grow because more residents move in the area due to economic, life style, or other opportunities. This research presents a relationship between average commuting travel time and population and land area of metropolitan areas with more than 750,000 population in the United States. The hypothesis is that in spite of significant variation among large and small urban areas, the relative residence- employment locations follows a general and predictable pattern. This work contributes to the third leg of the sustainability paradigm by addressing socially equitable communities in the field of Planning. It uses a case study of neighborhood planning in Seattle, Washington as its basis for linking meaningful public participation with social capital. It uses a thoughtful qualitative framework to measure social capital in primary and secondary sources and bases these parameters with expert knowledge from scholars within the social science fields.

Community gardens have been proposed as a solution to combat the ongoing and escalating food desert problem in low-income communities. As planners, community leaders and residents look to implement this solution and convert vacant property into gardens they need to be aware of the potential conflicts that can arise when the area starts to develop. The City of Arlington acquired the Blackland Prairie site in 1998 after a group of concerned citizens identified its value as possibly the last blackland prairie remnant site in the city. Encouraged by the Arlington Conservation Council, the land was purchased by the city to be held as permanent open space. In its current condition, the site remains in transition. Efforts by volunteers have helped maintain native prairie grasses on approximately half of the site. The eastern half however, has remained untouched since acquisition. Invasive grasses, woody and herbaceous plants continue to proliferate in this area, leaving relatively few native …

Room measurements were conducted in a variable acoustics classroom mockup space (epod) at Armstrong World Industries in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. Binaural room impulse responses were measured in the epod using a head and torso simulator. Five reverberation time (RT) scenarios were achieved with various combinations of absorptive wall panels and acoustical ceiling tile. These provided a range of mid-frequency RTs from 0.4 to 1.1 seconds. Three of the five RT scenarios were achieved using two different material configurations to also consider material location effects. Previous studies have demonstrated the negative impact of adverse signal-to-noise-ratios on non-native English-speaking listeners' performance on speech recognition using recall tasks, as well as implied that comprehension skills were more impaired than recognition skills under reverberation and noise. The authors have themselves previously conducted a pilot study on three native and three non-native Englishspeaking listeners to examine the effects of reverberation and noise using speech comprehension tasks. Those results suggested that speech comprehension performance is worse under longer reverberation times (RT), and that a longer RT is more detrimental to speech comprehension by non-native listeners than native listeners. Chapter three of Building Culture, “The New Woman’s Home. Kitchens, Laundry, Furnishings,” discusses household culture and modernization. It begins with the Frankfurt Kitchen and its designer, Grete Lihotzky, and continues with a discussion of electricity and the architect Adolf Meyer, and its expansion with the example of the electric laundries in the Frankfurt settlements. The next segment is a discussion of new furniture design, small, inexpensive furniture that was an essential partner to contemporary small house design and was avidly researched in the Frankfurt offices. Designers here include Kramer, Cetto and Schuster.

The Geddes Town Hall School House located on Eastern Michigan University's campus is representative of the rural education, locally and nationally. Since the Geddes Town Hall School House was moved to Eastern Michigan University, it has been used intermittently by professor's to host classes and to teach children about the history of schools. By creating brochures and an activity booklet about the Geddes Town Hall School House, interested individuals can learn about both the history of the structure and one-room school houses in general. This paper presents our research to develop a gesture-based 3D GIS system to engage the public in cultural heritage. It compares two types of interaction—device-based vs. natural interaction— and summarizes the beta-testing results of a 3D GIS tool for archaeology, called QueryArch3D, in which participants used device-based interaction (i.e. mouse and keyboard). It follows with a description of the gesture-based system—that we developed in response to these beta-tests. The system uses QueryArch3D and Microsoft’s Kinect to enable people use body movements (in lieu of keyboard or mouse) to navigate a virtual reality landscape, query 3D objects, and call up photos, …

Drought is widely known as an insidious hazard due to its complex and unique characteristics. Drought disasters have brought tremendous economic losses and significant social and environmental impacts to communities across the globe. To further understand the hazard drought poses and provide insights into planning for drought preparedness, this article conducts a thorough literature review of drought hazard and drought planning frameworks within the United States.
