Discussion Of The Contradictions Of The Contemporary Urban Landscape: The Case Of Caracas, Fabio Capra-Ribeiro
Faculty Publications
In the ongoing debate between seemingly conflicting conditions, the author contrasts several features of urban landscape to dig deeper into the understanding of the current Caracas. An interpretative process allows viewing the city from a daily perspective of joy and suffering. The process takes into account different scales of approach, the relationship between buildings and emptiness, and the role of green in the city. Gradually the carelessness of Caracas’s urban landscape becomes evident, fed by little attention to the small scale, the clustering of individualistic interventions and the neglect of the natural component. Final considerations will show the urban landscape …

Assessment Of Noise-Induced Annoyance By Tones In Noise From Building Mechanical Systems, Joonhee Lee, Lily M. Wang
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Prominent tones in noise generated by mechanical equipment in buildings can cause complaints from occupants in buildings. The ISO 1996-2 and ANSI S1.13 standards describe methodologies and metrics to quantify tonality perception, but the influence of tones in noise on human annoyance and performance is not fully understood yet. This paper investigates annoyance responses of humans while exposed to background noise with tonal components. Twenty participants completed digit span tasks while exposed to noise signals with differing levels of tones and overall loudness. Subjects were also asked to rate their annoyance after completing tasks under each noise signal. The subjective …
The Impact Of Building Acoustics On Speech Comprehension And Student Achievement,

The Impact Of Building Acoustics On Speech Comprehension And Student Achievement, Lily M. Wang
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
The movement for improved classroom acoustics has primarily been grounded on studies that show how building acoustics (i.e. background noise levels and room reverberation) affect speech intelligibility, as determined by speech recognition tests. What about actual student learning, though? If students do not understand each spoken word in the classroom perfectly, can they still manage to achieve high scholastic success? This presentation will review two recent studies conducted at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, linking classroom acoustic conditions to student learning outcomes and speech comprehension (rather than simply recognition). In the first, acoustic measurements in two public school districts …
Effects Of Room Acoustics On Comprehension Of Foreign-Accented Speech By Native And Non-Native English-Speaking Listeners,

Effects Of Room Acoustics On Comprehension Of Foreign-Accented Speech By Native And Non-Native English-Speaking Listeners, Zhao Peng, Kristin E. Hanna, Brenna N. Boyd, Lily M. Wang
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
In a previous study by the authors, reverberation time (RT) and background noise level (BNL) were both found to have negative effects on native and non-native English-speaking listeners in comprehending English speech produced by native American-English-speaking talkers. Comprehension scores were adjusted for listeners’ baseline English proficiency levels. In the present study, instead of native English-speaking talkers, two native Mandarin Chinese talkers (one male, one female) with similar English spoken proficiency were recruited to produce the same speech materials used in the previous study. A similar methodology was adopted to conduct speech comprehension tests on three groups of listeners: 1) native …

Detroit Works Long-Term Planning Project: Engagement Strategies For Blending Community And Technical Expertise, Toni L. Griffin, Dan Cramer, Megan Powers
Publications and Research
In January 2013, civic leaders, community stakeholders, and residents came together to release Detroit Future City: 2012 Detroit Strategic Framework Plan, a guiding blueprint for transforming Detroit from its current state of population loss and excessive vacancy into a model for the reinvention of post-industrial American cities. Three years prior, the U.S. Census had reported that the city had lost 24% of its population over the last decade and had experienced a 20% increase in vacant and abandoned property, bringing total vacancy to roughly the size of Manhattan. In addition to physical and economic challenges, Detroiters had also acknowledged significant …

The Lake View Cemetery, founded in 1869, was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. Over 107,000 individuals are interred on the sprawling 285 acre expanse that is located four and one-half miles from Cleveland's Public Square. According to a Plain Dealer report in 1870, the cemetery was designed to combine all the attractive features that "nature and true art can produce" to harmonize nature's alphabet-"stone, earth, wood and water." The landscape was laid out with broad avenues and shady walks "near the fountains in view of many a rustic pile [edifice] and quiet grave and …

This project set out to evaluate the validity and usefulness of CFD within the contemporary Design Practice. Initially attempting to analyze a specifi c design it became clear a more general study was needed. Analyzing natural ventilation is an infi nitely complex process, to determine the level of simplication required for use involved breaking the natural process down and analyzing the pieces seperately and then together. By using this process it become clear how the process can be used by architecture fi rms within their design process.

Energy Use Intensity And Infrared Thermography As A Tool In Building Assessments, Carrie Dickson, Sean Newberry, Blake Reynolds
Research-Based Design Initiative
Understanding a building’s energy usage has become more important over recent years. The building sector uses nearly half of the energy produced in the United States. By identifying ways to reduce a building’s energy usage, it can have major impact on reduced carbon emissions.

Research-Based Design Initiative
Current standard construction techniques play an increasing role in greenhouse gas emissions, so the need for exploration into alternative methods are a requirement for future products and construction. 47% of the CO2 emissions delivered into our atmosphere are due to building construction and materials. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) and other varied wood products are an emerging, viable source of sustainable, alternative building methods. The presented body of research explains the benefits of utilizing CLT, and other wood products, by expressing their embodied energy calculations and how that is determined by a process known as “Cradle-to-Gate”.
