Wired! And Visualizing Venice: Scaling Up Digital Art History, Kristin Huffman Lanzoni, Mark James-Vrooman Olson, Victoria E. Szabo

This article focuses on Visualizing Venice, an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural collaboration that engages in mapping, 3-D modeling, and multimedia representations of historical change in Venice, Italy. Through a “laboratory” approach that integrates students and faculty in multi-year research teams, we ask new questions and pursue emerging lines of inquiry about architectural monuments, their relation to the larger urban setting, and the role of sculptural and painted decoration in sacred spaces. Our practice of digital art history transforms both teaching and research and provides new means for communicating knowledge to a broad public.

Change Over Time: Neatline And The Study Of Architectural History, Lisa A. Reilly

This article discusses how the usual study of architecture from the perspective of a single moment in time, usually the moment of its creation is limiting. New methodologies make it possible to add to the current rich variety of approaches available to the architectural historian in order to consider the dynamic history of the forms we study. This problem can be resolved in part through the use of digital tools, in particular Neatline, (www.neatline.org) which allows the viewer to see and understand how a building changes over time.

As office and residential building, schools, and infrastructure become more sustainably built, there is no doubt that other fields will soon follow. The sporting domain needs to be the next step in sustainable design. Sport stadia can and will play a vital role in increasing sustainability awareness across the world. There is an enormous opportunity to have stadia serve as trendsetters in innovative thinking for sustainable design.

This paper contextualizes the 1967 design of Regional Technical College (RTC) campuses in Ireland, with reference to the influence of oil crises on early green design and the establishment of a regulatory environment. Variation between NZEB and Passive House low energy strategies are discussed. Design Science and Action research inform solution-oriented methodologies in a pilot retrofit project on 1.5% area of an RTC building. Problem investigation notes previous schemes, stakeholder’s goals, building evaluation and energy performance diagnosis. Environment interaction between context and artifact are discussed. Just as the chemistry creates urban smog and aerosols that influence climate change, chemistry in building air can alter the indoor environment for better or worse. This review focuses on chemical pathways initiated by oxidants that infiltrate from outdoor air and other indoor-sourced reactants and surfaces that make these environments unique chemical reactors. Ozone reacts with fragrance molecules, tobacco smoke residues, and even human skin oils to generate a host of oxidized organic compounds, secondary organic aerosols, and irritants. Nitrous acid is formed on indoor surfaces and is subsequently cleaved by even the relatively dim light indoor. This raises the …

Impact Of Modified Inlets On Residence Times In Baffled Tanks, Jeremy S. Carlston, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Sharp inlets, although prevalent, tend to reduce mixing efficiency in hydraulic contact tanks by affecting fluid and scalar transport throughout the entire system. Superior inlets are often not an option because of the prohibitive cost of upgrading preexisting tanks. To remedy this, seven inexpensive yet easily implemented attachments to a sharp inlet were tested on a full-scale, baffled, prototypical contact tank. Cumulative residence time distributions of a conservative, passive scalar were obtained for each attachment to assess their performance. A study using computational fluid dynamics of the same tank with the various attachments was then performed to strengthen the empirical …

In India poor sanitation accounts for 1,600 daily deaths of children under the age of five (Dasra, 2012). The societal and environmental conditions in India and many other developing countries have continuously stood as barriers to facilitating changes in sanitation behavior. Efforts made to improve hygiene have continuously faced opposing forces including major gaps between the supply and demand of sanitation. This paper will focus on one pilot program conducted in Chennai, India over the summer of 2014. A review of the history of housing in Ireland shows that owner occupancy and social housing were policy choices by successive governments. Owner occupancy was heavily supported through a system of grants and tax breaks and social housing was directly provided through local authorities at subsidised rents. In recent years policy has changed and tenure neutrality is now guiding the government’s attitude to housing. This is a significant change which has not been sufficiently discussed and has consequences which are not appreciated.
