The goal of this research project is divided into three components. First, utilize Tally to calculate the embodied energy and carbon of the CLT structural system of the Glenwood Parking Garage. Second, the embodied energy and carbon values will be compared against values found in a previous study for different structural systems in parking garages (pre-cast concrete, cellular steel, post-tensioned concrete). Finally, the subsequent dataset and process entailed in its generation will provide the basis for an evaluation of Tally as a tool for life cycle assessment as part of the design process. The goal of this research is to produce a daylight and energy analysis of the Yost Grube Hall Ankeny ‘Net Zero’ Multi-Family Housing project.The examination of current daylight levels provides information on what is gained or lost in regards to daylighting and net-zero goals. A focus on the progression of the surrounding neighbourhood development will guide the different daylight studies. This combined with the other strategies employed by YGH in their design efforts forms a narrative about the realities of ‘Net-Zero’ architecture and the various routes to success.

OBJECTIVE: The project objective was to analyze and test building energy use modeling software programs to find a quick and easy to use tool that can be implemented in the early stages of design. A list of programs was developed and narrowed down based on criteria important to architects in early design stages. Programs were tested and rated using a weighted criteria formula. Recommendations for capabilities and user interface of future energy modeling programs were made. Plastic Fantastic: The Fiberglass Boatbuilding Industry in Holland, Michigan is a chapter concerning the use of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) to build boats starting in the 1940s. In the 1950s boat builders discovered that fiberglass would allow them to design boats that would lead to new boat sales and increased profit margins for years to come. This technology steadily spread throughout American boat manufacturing plants, including Holland, Michigan, placing the town among the leaders in the industry.

The thermal mass of concrete within a building can be used as an energy storage system and hence reduce the demand on the auxiliary heating and cooling systems in the building. The heat storage capacity of concrete can be enhanced by adding phase change materials (PCMs) which provide a high latent heat storage capacity. However the addition of PCM to concrete reduces the conductivity of the concrete due to the low conductivity of the PCMs. This hinders the efficient utilisation of the additional heat storage capacity provided by the PCM.

The proposal for the reuse of the Donna Brown Building was the result of the analysis of the public space layout on S. Grand Ave. This included an understanding of the qualities of the promenade created in the S. Grand Commercial District through a “street diet”, and the beautification of the streetscape. I was in particular interested in studying parking as it clearly affects walkability and circulation. For this studio, the SFS collaborated with The International Institute of St. Louis in a call for innovative design ideas to re-imagine the former building of the IISTL located at 3654 South Grand Ave. This architectural piece was built in 1930s as a car repair and dealership, with hydraulic elevators that lifted the cars from the repair shop at the lower level to the parking at the rooftop. Funded by a grant from the National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program, this study delves into the technical, often forgotten, aspects of the Siege of Newport - a Revolutionary War engagement that took place in Middletown, RI in August 1778. It pairs the historical record with scientific analysis of the artillery, fortifications, geography and unforeseen circumstances that impacted the Siege. While much of the original earthen defense-works are now gone, there are a small number of sites that still exist. This study also covers what sites remain, their condition and thoughts on how to preserve and commemorate them.
