Dermal Uptake Directly From Air Under Transient Conditions: Advances In Modeling And Comparisons With Experimental Results For Human Subjects, G. C. Morrison, C. J. Weschler, G. Bekö

To better understand the dermal exposure pathway, we enhance an existing mechanistic model of transdermal uptake by including skin surface lipids (SSL) and consider the impact of clothing. Addition of SSL increases the overall resistance to uptake of SVOCs from air but also allows for rapid transfer of SVOCs to sinks like clothing or clean air. We test the model by simulating di-ethyl phthalate (DEP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) exposures of six bare-skinned (Weschler et al. 2015, Environ. Health Perspect., 123, 928) and one clothed participant (Morrison et al. 2016, J. Expo. Sci. Environ. Epidemiol., 26, 113). The model predicts …

Architect Teddy Cruz defines the role of an activist architect as "expanded mode of practice", and the task of "deigning the protocols or the interfaces between communities and spaces".

This thesis contends that architecture schools need to continue to embrace the widely-accepted norm of studios studying abroad and working in an international studio. This study investigated the effects of polymers on the small-strain stiffness behavior of high-volume Class-F fly ash-kaolinite mixtures. The shear wave velocity (Vs) and its anisotropy of organically modified fly ash-kaolinite mixtures were evaluated using a self-developed floating wall type consolidometer bender element (BE) testing system. Both synthetic polymers [polyethylene oxide (PEO)] and biopolymers (xanthan gum and chitosan) were used to modify the stiffness of fly ash-kaolinite mixtures. Shear waves generated and received by bender elements were measured to quantify the small-strain stiffness of the organically modified fly ash-kaolinite mixtures in three orthogonal directions, i.e., vh, hv, and hh. Prevalent availability and use of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have placed this technology at the forefront of federal, state, and local policy discussions. With the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) August 2016 release of regulatory conditions for civilian and commercial uses of unmanned aircraft, states and local governments are seeking to enact their own regulations to protect citizens, vital infrastructure, and economic assets including airports. Design features of the Bertschi School Science Wing and the Bullitt Center in Seattle, Washington are incorporated to illustrate the sensory legibility of ecological sustainability criteria.The criteria are available to designers to help educate a building's occupants on environmentally sustainable design and motivate more sustainable behavior.
