This paper gives an overview of a study conducted in a geographical area of the US to understand the millennial generation’s perception of the workplace of the construction industry. Many organizations face the challenge of integrating diverse generations in a workplace. With the retirement of a large number of Boomers and the current intake of Millennials in the workplace, organizations are facing a challenge to attract and retain the millennial generation. Workplace expectations of the millennial generation and employees are compared with the expectations of the workplace amongst different generations in the construction industry.

Among 34 participating countries within the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United States performed below average in mathematics earning a rank of 27. The World Economic Forum (2014) ranks the United States 51 out of 144 countries scoring a 4.4 out of 7 (7 = excellent) in the quality of mathematics and science education. Although the United States’ competitive advantage and economic growth is directly connected to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers, only 28 percent of those students choose to major with these fields in college. The primary goals of this project were to examine the amount of lateral force resisted by a single-bay mortise-tenon connected timber moment frame, and to introduce ductile behavior into the mortise-tenon connections by adding a steel sleeve around a traditional wood peg. This research aimed to provide proof that traditional timber frames are capable of ductile racking while reliably complying with ASCE 7-10 building code drift speci! cations, implying an increase in the ASCE 7-10 ductility factor (R) for wood frames when used as lateral force resisting elements. Geographic isolation and habitat fragmentation can cause a population to undergo independent evolutionary trajectories. Stream dwelling vertebrates such as the minnows belonging to the Cyprinidae family, one of the most genetically variable and geographically distributed groups, are excellent models for examining the genetic effects of population isolation and substructure. Rhinichthys osculus, a freshwater minnow, is a local species of concern that inhabits the Santa Ana and San Gabriel watershed systems within the Southern California region. 23 polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized and identified for Rhinichthys osculus in conjunction with the Savannah River Ecology Lab. Insensitive munitions explosives are new formulations that are less prone to unintended detonation compared to traditional explosives. While these formulations have safety benefits, the individual constituents, such as 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), have an unknown ecosystem fate with potentially toxic impacts to flora and fauna exposed to DNAN and/or its metabolites. Fungi may be useful in remediation and have been shown to degrade traditional nitroaromatic explosives, such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene and 2,4-dinitrotoluene, that are structurally similar to DNAN. In this study, a fungal Penicillium sp., isolated from willow trees and designated strain KH1, was shown to degrade DNAN in solution within 14 days. …

Heavy concrete and masonry walled buildings with lightweight steel or wood flexible roof diaphragms are a common type of construction in North America. Failures of the out-of-plane wall anchorage to these roof systems and the resulting partial roof collapses during past earthquakes have led to repeated revisions to the seismic design provisions in the U.S. model building codes. However, the force levels considered in the current design provisions have remained largely unchanged since their introduction in the 1997 Uniform Building Code, and these provisions have not been fully tested by strong ground motions in the field.
