Sustainable development efforts frequently focus on understanding and promoting the factors that influence health and wellbeing. Urban environments have received attention in recent years as spaces which can increase psychological distress. Despite hypothesized reports of urban environments being less conducive to good mental health then natural environments, few studies have investigated the effects of urban form characteristics (size, density, nuisances, transportation, and housing characteristics) and mental health measures at the city level. Using 2014 data from the 500 largest cities in the United States, this thesis evaluates the relationship between urban form and aggregate self-report scores of poor mental health. …

This paper provides an overview of historic and current organizational limitations emerging in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Building Owner / Operations (AECOO) Industry. It then provides an overview of new technologies that attempt to mitigate these limitations. This thesis is a study of the history and impetus for the low-rent high-rise public housing projects constructed prior to 1965 in St. Louis. Except for the largest and most well-known Pruitt-Igoe project which already had been the subject of a lot of study, other major public housing towers were John J. Cochran Garden Apartment (MO 1-3), completed in 1952-1953; George L. Vaughn Apartments (MO-1-6), Joseph M. Darst Apartments (MO-1-7), and Anthony M. Webbe Apartments (MO-1-7a). For the Love of Concrete celebrates the beauty, versatility, durable sustainability and authenticity of concrete in architectural design. This capstone is born out of the contentious debate around the mid twentieth century architectural style “Brutalism”. I acknowledge the shortcomings of concrete as a material (chiefly its carbon-intensive manufacturing process), but forefront its positive attributes. This in the face of increasing demolitions of concrete structures, and the trend toward superficiality in architectural design as architects more than ever focus too much on the design of the skin or facades of buildings, rather than focusing on designing good bones.

When the weather is good (and even sometimes when it isn’t) I occasionally walk around the periphery of the UNL city campus, often over the lunch hour, now that the trails and the sidewalks allow one to walk a complete circuit. The walk along Antelope Creek from the Big X to Q Street is beautiful. The designers of the project made nice art works on the floor of the creek and on the retaining walls on the valley sides that add to the beauty of nature.

Most studies of this type use a hedonic value method of analysis while using spatial analysis primarily as a tool in the analysis. The nearest neighboring match analysis used in this study uses spatial analysis as the primary method of measurement. Housing stock from Arlington, Texas from 2015 – 2016 is used to determine whether this type of analysis is effective in measuring the existence of the proximate principle. It proved difficult to obtain a large enough study group when attempting to include multiple different structural attributes. Ultimately, it was shown that a much larger timeframe may be needed in …

The world of sex business regulation can be muddled and confusing. In the past, cities banned sexually-oriented businesses (SOBs) on the basis that they were morally bankrupt and obscene. Courts have ruled that the First Amendment bars cities from regulating these businesses based on the content of the business, and therefore cities have found a way to regulate SOBs based on real or perceived negative effects that SOBs bring to the surrounding community.
