December 2017 marked 50 years since archaeologist Michael J. O’Kelly first observed the solar illumination of the burial chamber in the Neolithic passage tomb at Newgrange during the period of the winter solstice. O’Kelly subsequently recorded direct sunlight entering Newgrange through the ‘especially contrived slit which lies under the roof-box at the outer end of the passage roof’ on 21 December 1969. The discovery of this historic phenomenon, dating back over 5,000 years, captured the public interest and imagination at that time and ever since. In response, Cal Poly formulated an interdisciplinary course comprised of architecture, construction management, and architectural engineering students. The class is based around the concept of Interdisciplinary Product Delivery (IPD), which allows for a cohesive melding of disciplines that fosters a holistic and efficient design process. The Amoveo Group in collaboration with Mission TwentyFive35 focuses on the northern region of the Dominican Republic, “El Cibao”, to share the Gospel and plant churches by implementing a sustainable solution that addresses the community’s four needs. Mission TwentyFive35 identifies the lack of clean water, food sustainability shortcomings, limited access to primary healthcare and education, and the absence of technical and vocational job training as the primary contributors to these extremely impoverished communities.

The purpose of this master’s project thesis is to explore and implement the necessary professional museum practices to care for and preserve the private Vietnam War-era slide collection of Kenneth L. Swain Jr., an Air Force veteran. Through museum practices presented by leading museum professionals, the slide collection was examined and a plan implemented for slide care and maintenance. In conjunction with the preservation of this slide collection, an exhibition was curated in honor of Swain’s unique photo-documentary slide collection.

Preschoolers that have obtained Non-Accidental Injury (NAI) from familial child abuse are in need of having a unique place for neurorehabilitation in correlation with traditional therapies. My thesis project suggests adding an exhibit annex to an existing giant panda exhibit that will give preschoolers an opportunity to help develop new neuropathways when exposed to mediation and creative activities. Meditation and creative activities are being examined by neuroscientists as an aid in neuroplasticity after brain injury. Some cities find they lack the resources to implement downtown area plans. Tactical urbanism is an alternative approach to city-building that could be used in these instances. Many mosques in East Java are built by the Nahdliyin and are culturally affiliated to Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the biggest Indonesian moderate Muslim organization. NU maintains a specific value system as the continuation of the Wali Sanga tradition. This paper discusses the representation of these values and traditions in the contemporary mosques of Nahdliyin in Malang, East Java. These mosques are where a great basis of the Nahdliyin experiences dynamic interaction with other Muslim groups take place. The results show that despite their pluralistic formal expressions, these contemporary mosques of Nahdliyinshare similar values and traditions with Wali Sanga mosques.

In Saitama, Japan, a series of experimental studies has been conducted inside an outdoor scale model canopy to find an effective design solution of water bodies for improving urban thermal environmentand pedestrian comfort. Thus, the study result may help designers and planners to manage tradeoffs between the cooling effect demands, land-use limits and other design elements in urban environments. By modifying its physical properties, the present study shows a clear evidence of the mitigating capacity of urban water bodies.
