2019 Spring Shared Sites: Design for Intergenerational Aging

Intergenerational exchanges are becoming more and more important as the society ages. Throughout this studio, I have tried to figure out what are the walls between generations and how to tear down the barriers with architectural languages.

Between two generations, there are a lot of strong stereotypes which make more difficult to interact with each other.

If we just ignore these stereotypes and try to make them interact, it might bring many side effects.

In this landscape-based studio, senior lecturer Jacqueline Margetts led a group of undergraduate architecture students in exploring ecological and public open space networks through the West End neighborhood in the City of St. Louis, focusing along the historic Hodiamont Tracks. The former streetcar line, which remains as a neglected service alley, will be converted to a greenway by Great Rivers Greenway. The studio was sited in the West End neighborhood in part due to its high number of native bee species, a vital component in maintaining biodiverse ecosystems and key indicator of environmental health. Born from architecture’s increasingly shattered conceptual foundations, the formal project of bodily objects presents an interesting case study into the emerging dialectics surrounding considerations of representation, technology, and affect. This thesis examines the genealogical origins of corporeal form in order to further understand the stake that bodies hold within the production and reception of architecture. By tracing the pedigree of corporeal form back to the two types of architectural signification that emerged after modernism, bodies can be validated as a project able to extend and advance architecture’s potential for individualized and collective engagement. This thesis puts forward the provocation to employ spoliation as a form of preservation and as a tool of locus making and identity mediation. This is done by syncretizing architectural artifacts and remnants from different timelines, oscillating between operations of defamiliarization and memorialization. This thesis test and explores its contention on a site of contested memory, where the idea of reclaiming cultural ownership is done through a formal, spatial and orderly spoliation. The artifacts ‘on site’ and ‘off site’ is relayed through different mediums and dimensions through parameters of resolution and assimilation.

This capstone investigates the unique relationship between Vincent Van Gogh and planting designer Piet Oudolf's vibrant use of color and contrast in their work as it relates to their perception of the landscape. The project is mainly a comparison of the two artists, exploring Van Gogh's use of complementary colors and brushstroke techniques to create vivid contrast in his renderings of agrarian landscapes, and Oudolf's parallel approach to creating painterly meadows and prairie gardens. Outside of the spaces we inhabit daily, the car is the frame through which the majority of Americans experience the majority of architecture. Most architecture, especially as viewed from the car window is mere scenography, mere image; but images are democratic, they are compressible, transmissible, infinitely reproducible, and therefore immortal1 . The recycling of plastic is a critical informal economy in Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums located in the heart of Mumbai. Parts of the city were rebuilt after World War II, others built over during communist rule, and some created during times of rapid westernization after the fall of communism. Buildings account for a significant percentage of energy use, material consumption, and waste production. This study argues that a solution for this issue is the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Research shows that reusing existing buildings for new design projects helps to decrease the amount of energy consumed and waste produced. Even for a healthy senior, their mobility will most likely decrease in a gradual but stable pattern as they age. This building represents a Grandparenting Center, a place with a variety of activities where grandparents or older guardians can take children for the day. One in three older adults in Hong Kong are caretakers for children at least one day a week, and in most cases much longer. This center is a space where grandparents can connect with their grandchildren while also building a community of peers with similar responsibilities and demands.
