Agats:The Waterfront City Of The Asmat, Basauli Umar Lubis
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The development along and within the Asewets River presents the most characteristic and memorable city form of the city of Agats, Papua, Indonesia. The river and the city's raised roads form anintegrated circulation pattern and together played an important part in the development of the city. The city of Agats is unique in that all structures are built above wood or concrete pilings. The unique presence of the elevated bazaar street connects buildings likewise raised on piles. The structural elevation of the city above the ground keeps the settlement dry even during rainy season, when there is a 4 kilometer …
A Water Field Civilization: The Shifting Rural Territories Of Taiwan, 2010 Chulalongkorn University
A Water Field Civilization: The Shifting Rural Territories Of Taiwan, Pei-Chun Wen
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The Taiwanese countryside is representative of Asia's 'hydraulic civilization' and has a society based upon a water-orientated productive landscape. Its irrigation system of paddy fields and fish pondsis strongly interrelated to society's collective units, such as families or unions, which, in turn, structure social morals and behaviors. In a comparison of three different agriculture plains in Taiwan, interpretative maps reveal differences in the settlement patterns related to topography and water resource management. The critical reading of historical documentation and creation of interpretative maps reveals how early settlers solved water threats and managed to stabilize water sources. The study proposes a …

Urban Dynamism, A Contrasting Experience:Street Life In Unplanned Bangkok And Planned Melbourne, Sidh Sintusingha, Kasama Polakit, Richard Bruch
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This paper investigates the notion of 'urban dynamism' through the conceived and lived street life of Bangkok, Thailand and Melbourne, Australia. Each city provides a contrasting experience, namelyBangkok's organic dynamism and the city's administrators varied attempts to control and organize it, and Melbourne's conscious planning and design to rejuvenate urban spaces, through the formal strategies of the Victorian State Government and the City of Melbourne.

Art On Water: Art That Revitalizes Insular Communities Facing Depopulation And Economic Decline, Kentaro Yagi
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The Inland Sea of Japan, once a flourishing cultural and economic artery, is now struggling with depopulation and economic decline. Traditionally, this area has been popular for public and privateart projects. Recent large-scale art projects and exhibitions on Naoshima Island and Inujima Island explored the possibilities of art in a public context. Site-specific artworks in collaboration with the local community have attracted visitors and brought about a favorable impact. Along with the rich historic and natural resources of the Inland Sea area, emerging art projects in various islands have started to revitalize the insular communities within.
Understanding Social Networks In Frazier Courts Hope Vi Development, 2010 University of Texas at Arlington
Understanding Social Networks In Frazier Courts Hope Vi Development, Christopher Buentello
Planning Theses
The HOPE VI program enacted in 1992 represented a shift in public housing by addressing resident's needs through physical design improvements, self-sufficiency programs, and the deconcentration of poverty. Funding through HOPE VI allowed local housing authorities to demolish deteriorated public housing units and replace them with new income-inclusive housing units. The "hope" would be that low income residents would interact with middle income residents to access resources that are normally beyond the reach of low income individuals. This assumes of course that residents will interact amongst each other. Therefore, I conducted a survey of residents at Dallas' Frazier Courts to …
Preparing For The Hearth Act: Preventing And Ending Homelessness At The Local Level, 2010 University of Texas at Arlington
Preparing For The Hearth Act: Preventing And Ending Homelessness At The Local Level, Laura Kunkel
Planning Theses
The HEARTH Act of 2009 expands care to people experiencing homelessness by giving communities more freedom in allocation of their resources based on their ability to produce measurable results. Although regulations have not been released on this legislation, communities, called Continuums of Care, can prepare for program changes by monitoring current data for areas in need of growth within the system. One of the goals included in the statute is to move a homeless family from an emergency shelter to permanent supportive housing within 30 days. This paper uses data from the Annual Progress Reports from grantees in the Continuum …

Newnan's Original Public Library Celebrates Grand Reopening
Georgia Library Quarterly
The article features the reopening of the Carnegie Library in Newnan, Georgia in 2009. The original facility in 1904 reportedly epitomized early 20th century neoclassical architecture which is marked by symmetrical paired brick pilasters across the facade and evenly-spaced, paneled and stained columns in the interior. It is stated that the new library will offer popular and current printed material, computer stations, an art gallery and meeting rooms.
Adaptive Housing: Transformation And Growth In The Urban Environment, 2010 Roger Williams University
Adaptive Housing: Transformation And Growth In The Urban Environment, Kevin Mowatt
Architecture Theses
The proposal for an adaptive housing project and its chosen location arose from two obstacles that all modern cities and the world as a whole, face. The urban environment is revered for its cultural amalgam of people and wide range of demographics; however with this density and diversity comes a shortage of one type or another of commodious housing. Additionally and consequentially, the city must expand and build new buildings, leaving older, unsuitable building vacant. An adaptive architecture would allow families to grow and demographics to shift within the established community, all the while reinvigorating that second obstacle the city …
Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, 2010 Roger Williams University
Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, Andrei Sdrula
Architecture Theses
This project aims to apply the concepts of contradiction and duality as described in the manifesto to reinvigorate and reconnect a portion of the city Bucharest: the capital of Romania. This city has a long history of architectural achievements and disasters, and this intervention gets to the heart of that legacy when it confronts the House of Parliament: a massive megalomaniacal building constructed under the Ceausescu regime in the 1980s. The project addresses the parliament, sector, city, country, and people with first: a master plan, and then a civic building within that master plan that is located in front of …

Feasibility Study Of Solar Driven Underground Cooling System, Michel E. Shafik
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the United States the peak electrical use occurs during the summer. In addition, the building sector consumes a major portion of the annual electrical energy consumption. One of the main energy consuming components in the building sector is the Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. This research studies the feasibility of implementing a solar driven underground cooling system that could contribute to reducing building cooling loads. The developed system consists of an Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) coupled with a solar chimney that provides a natural cool draft to the test facility building at the Solar Energy Research Test Facility …

Control Force Estimation In Seismic Building Design, 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology
Control Force Estimation In Seismic Building Design, Xiaozhe Zhang, Franklin Y. Cheng
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents two approaches of estimating the control force magnitude in the building structure's seismic design. One is by spectrum average in frequency domain, and the other is by nondeterministic Monte Carlo analysis in time domain. the spectrum method is proposed to find the estimation by averaging the system's frequency response with an earthquake spectrum as a weighting factor. the nondeterministic method is based on sets of potential ground motions generated numerically. the approaches are developed in the concept of performance design, with studies based on the site potential seismic hazard and presenting results at different levels of displacement …
