Evidence Based Design (EBD) is an informed approach to design where designers base their decisions on quantitative and qualitative research. The design of the Universal Access Center for United Cerebral Palsy, discussed in this paper, encapsulates this approach to design. The five stages of EBD and how they were achieved within this project is defined. In the first phase, programming, current trends in healthcare as well as issues surrounding design for adults with Cerebral Palsy (CP) are discussed. This visual presentation looks at the history of office spatial design, particularly in relation to the evolution of the Open Plan office. Starting with the invention of the steel beam which facilitated the creation of large open-plan floorplates in the later part of the 19^th Century, the presentation looks at examples of open plan offices up to the present day. In particular this presentation looks at “the cubicle” and the impact of office spatial and furniture design on different work-modes including collaboration and concentration.

In 2009, Christopher Cuttle began to challenge the suitability of the metrics contained within current lighting design standards and guidance. In short, Cuttle proposed a move away from providing an amount of light that relates to the difficulty of a visual task and instead, providing an amount of light that relates to the brightness of a space. This sense of brightness would be estimated by a new lighting metric, Mean Room Surface Exitance.
