A Review Of Effective Urban Strategies For Enhancing Pedestrian Thermal Comfort In High-Temperature Urban Environments, Norhan Mahmoud Mohamed Ibrahim Ali, Ahmed H. Aboulsaadat, Ingy I. El-Darwish, Ayman Gamal Eldin Ahmed Abdel Tawab
Journal of Engineering Research
Abstract- Pedestrian well-being is significantly influenced by the feeling of being thermally comfortable, and enhancing this comfort level contributes to the overall walkability. This study extensively compares the impact of different approaches in enhancing thermal comfort for pedestrians. The evaluation encompasses both fieldwork observations and computer simulations results. The investigated strategies include the urban geometry (arrangement, orientation and shape of urban structures), vegetation, solar-reflective materials, and water features. These strategies are considered the most effective means for improving outdoor thermal comfort. The findings reveal that the key climatic factors influencing outdoor thermal comfort in a microclimate are mean radiant temperature, …

The overall goal of this study was to assess 28 selected locations in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, score them for walkability and bikeability, and suggest changes to low-ranking locations to improve the infrastructure of the town. We selected these points by focusing on areas of target for residents (grocery shopping, routes to work, schools, etc.), and to ensure we covered a major portion of the town for proper representation. We scored each of our sites using our instrument, which was broken down into two main categories: walkability and bikeability. We also conducted on-site interviews with passersby to collect first-hand accounts about these …

Supporting Social Equity Through Informal Spaces On An Urban Campus, Eve B. Klein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation focuses on applying research to design in the setting of higher education. Specifically, it explores the informal spaces outside the classroom at a predominantly Black college in an urban setting. The existing structural challenges facing college students are many, including issues related to financial resources, mental health/wellness, family responsibilities, psychosocial identity formation, and structural racism. These challenges were compounded by the events of the spring of 2020, when a heightened awareness of anti-Black racism, combined with the hardships of COVID-19, brought college campuses to a close and masses of people to the streets to protest the unjust killings …

Environmental Barriers And Facilitators To Family-Centered Rounds In Pediatric Critical Care Settings, Swati Goel
All Dissertations
Rounding in healthcare settings involves the clinical team making routine trips to the patient room to evaluate the patient and devise a care plan (Lynch, 2015). In ICUs, multiple rounds occur throughout the day based on purpose, location, and timing (Mittal, 2014), including morning, surgical, and post-admission rounds (Gurses & Xiao, 2006). Due to the nature of patient illnesses in ICUs, multidisciplinary rounds are most effective in making patient care decisions (Gurses & Xiao, 2006; Lane et al., 2013).
This study discusses the morning rounds that an attending physician and their team lead to create a plan for the day …

Introduction: Robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) is a form of minimally invasive surgery that is increasing in both its adoption and development due to many perceived advantages such as tremor reduction and motion scaling. However, RAS is still relatively new and there are a variety of novel barriers and challenges to the adoption of these platforms. Objectives: This study aims to understand how the integration of RAS platforms impacts the interactions and outcomes of interactions between surgical team members to explore the barriers from three aspects critical to facilitating Robotic-assisted-surgery (RAS) adoption: the human-robotic interaction, built environment, and RAS training. Future …

A Framework To Unveil Design Decisions In Ecological Urbanism, Addison C. Martin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Ecological urbanism offers a framework for landscape architecture to address the challenges posed by dynamic infrastructure projects in the face of changing climates and human impacts. As Nature-based Solutions (NbS) become more prevalent, the role of aesthetics in these solutions becomes increasingly important. However, there has been a lack of systematic approaches to assess the design aesthetics of landscape architecture in practice. This study aims to fill this gap by providing a rapid assessment framework tailored for landscape architecture practitioners. Drawing from the concepts of regenerative design and ecological urbanism, the framework comprises three sections: Ecological Function (EFx), Anthropocentric Function …

This thesis delves into the integration of social and environmental remediation through innovative architectural strategies, focusing on the adaptive reuse of an abandoned copper smelter plant in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The project confronts the site’s industrial legacy by deploying contemporary programs that cultivate a productive, sustainable, and community-oriented environment. A pivotal aspect of the redevelopment is a phytoremediation system utilizing wetlands to purify toxic metal-contaminated water, thus restoring ecological integrity and providing clean water to the community.
At the heart of this transformation is the artistic integration of glassmaking, where flowers and plants that have absorbed metals through phytoremediation …

Helium is integral in several industries, including nuclear waste management and semiconductors. Thus, developing a sensing method for detecting helium is essential to ensure the proper operation of such facilities. Several approaches can be used for helium detection, including based on the high thermal conductivity of helium, which is several times higher than air. This work utilizes the high thermal conductivity of helium to design and analyze a bimorph MEMS sensor for helium sensing applications. COMSOL Multiphysics software (version 6.2) is used to carry out this investigation. The sensor is constructed from poly-silicon and SiO2 materials with a trenched …

Learning, being the primary aspiration of museums, “is a byproduct of attention.”1 A visitor’s ability to focus and sustain attention on the objects, narratives, and messages within the exhibition environment profoundly influences their overall experience and the educational impact of their visit.
In an era of rapid digital evolution, changes in how information is consumed and communicated have led to shorter attention spans. Traditional museums, which are rooted in continuous, linear storytelling, now face a need for adaptation. This thesis advocates for an innovative exhibition design approach tailored to the realities of shorter attention spans, proposing curatorial and design …

This book is an index of nine exchanges with strangers whom I met online through email Listservs or by word of mouth. In these transactions, I offered to repair broken things for a trade-in-kind payment. Through the brief relationship between owner and designer, each interaction suggests that an object is almost never entirely obsolete despite its perceived obsolescence.
At the core of these trades is a grassroots protest of the landfill and a critique of our global capitalist commerce system. The apparent desire for and nature of these trades demonstrates that stories make our objects meaningful. Each interplay studies peoples’ …

In bustling urban areas like Manhattan, New York, the majority of interactions between individuals occur amidst the whirlwind of daily life. Yet, there is an absence of genuine connections within local communities, particularly among neighbors who are geographically close, creating a sense of detachment, untrusting, and anonymity. This thesis involves exploring innovative interventions with the ultimate goal of uncovering novel possibilities in interactive exhibitions, distinct from traditional displays. All of this is an effort to curate emotional journeys that transcend routine, fostering vibrant community belonging and connectivity. Against the backdrop of the city’s vertical living, where neighbor encounters are often …

Architecture As A Carbon-Based Practice, Qixin Yu
Masters Theses
Carbon serves as both a silent protagonist and a looming antagonist in the narrative of architecture, shaping not only the physical structures we inhabit but also the ecological legacy we leave behind.
Centuries of human exploitation of the environment have led to climate and material crises. Shifting this dynamic requires action at micro (matter), meso (material), and macro (materiality) levels. Biogenic materials offer significant potential for carbon sequestration and present opportunities for the building industry to collaborate with nature rather than merely extract from it.
This thesis establishes a research and manufacturing practice that prioritizes material innovation, carbon sequestration, environmental …
