Notched Hollow Square Section Steel Column Buckling, Zia Razzaq, Solomon Tecleab

Presented in this paper is an outcome of a study to assess the effect of section loss in the form of longitudinal notches on the buckling load of hollow square section steel columns. The theoretical study includes buckling load estimates based on both an iterative equilibrium as well as a non-iterative energy approach. Buckling loads based on sample laboratory experiments are also presented. The study shows that the presence of a notch can significantly reduce the axial load-carrying capacity of a steel column.

The accumulation of water runoff during rain storms is a major problem in New York City’s combination water systems, forcing water treatment plants to release untreated excess water. To avoid overfilling of the sewer system by this grey water, pocket parks and gardens will be used to absorb the excess rainfall. We will be harnessing nature’s resources with current technologies such as: solar panels combined with rain catching canopies, to beautify the environment, educate the public about sustainability, stimulate growth to local businesses through increased foot traffic and bringing social awareness on environmental issues.

As cross-laminated timber has become an increasingly popular construction material, its use as a shear wall element has also demanded attention. Primary obstructions to the use of CLT shear walls have been the lack of an economic connection type that does not compromise the structural integrity and has the robustness that CLT shear wall panels deserve. With today’s technology in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), this risk can generally be mitigated. Using Whiting-Turner’s construction of Stanford University’s new ChEM-H & SNI Building as an example, this case study discusses the use of GPR for underground mapping, as well as various ways to implement GPR technology. This study examines microeconomic factors that affect Bid Difference between the designer’s Engineer’s Estimate and the contractor’s Winning Bid. Historically, the accuracy of the Engineer’s Estimate and the Winning Bid vary. To account for this discrepancy, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recommends a contingency be included in all Engineer’s Estimates. Statistical analysis was performed to determine if state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) were currently meeting the recommended Bid Difference values. Data was collected from California, North Carolina, and Ohio from 2012 through 2014.
