Architectural Design Factors Influencing Pedestrian Flow In Community Malls: A Case Study Of Thong Lo, Nicha Wiboonpote 2017 Faculty of Architecture

Architectural Design Factors Influencing Pedestrian Flow In Community Malls: A Case Study Of Thong Lo, Nicha Wiboonpote

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

During the past decade, community malls are in the fastest growing category of Bangkok's retail industry. This growth was due to their building layouts and types of tenants which match urban lifestyles; along with Bangkok zoning restrictions for large shopping centers in residential areas. Today, the number of community malls with three or more floors (mid-rise community malls) is growing, especially in Thong Lo. This is because of the increasing land prices, where investments in community malls with one-two floors are no longer cost-effective. However, mid-rise community malls commonly have the issue of low pedestrian flows on the upper floors, …

Cmu Media Arts And Design Center, Pachara Chantanayingyong 2017 Faculty of Architecture

Cmu Media Arts And Design Center, Pachara Chantanayingyong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The development of technological innovations has led to the diversification of art in terms of its form as an instrument to portray artists' ideas and creativity. Focusing on contemporary art in the twenty-first century, electronic and digital media play a dominant role as well as conventional art forms. From an architectural perspective, shifting media and form affect the design framework of art space in the twenty-first century, which requires further study for suitable criteria. In addition, existing art spaces are outnumbered by the sheer quantity of artworks due to continuous artistic production. Several art spaces counteract this problem by expanding …

Tropical Strategy Of Modern Architecture In Cambodia For The Design Of A Contemporary Art Space In Phnom Penh, Pisith Ty 2017 Faculty of Architecture

Tropical Strategy Of Modern Architecture In Cambodia For The Design Of A Contemporary Art Space In Phnom Penh, Pisith Ty

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In the past decades, Cambodia has experienced a boom in building construction. However, many of those buildings do not take sustainable approach into account. They are built without concern of the tropical climate which results into a high level of energy consumption from air-conditioning system. Some none-commercial buildings, such as cultural and educational facilities, could not be operated because of lack of the fund for electricity. For a better understanding of architectural design in the tropical environment of the context, the research focuses on the works of Vann Molyvann, the father of architects in Cambodia, a state architect in 1960s, …

Use Transformation Process Of Shophouses: A Case Study Of Tha Tien's Shophouse, Bangkok, Peeraya Boonprasong 2017 Faculty of Architecture

Use Transformation Process Of Shophouses: A Case Study Of Tha Tien's Shophouse, Bangkok, Peeraya Boonprasong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In the changing urban context, proposing new uses for historic buildings such shophouses has mould a constraint to place identity when the application of utilisation is grounded on tendencies of demand and consumerism. The historic urban fabric, as a particular physicality of activity and experience in which meaning is interpreted through a sense of place and authenticity, is disturbed by misuse and excessive growth from the new concept of uses. The study of use transformation is to comprehend the capability of responsive behaviour to place bonding, when use is transforming by internal and external influences e.g. life course, repossession, honourability, …

The Shenzhen Activist Program`, Hyunggyu Kim, Jae Hyun Kim 2016 Syracuse University

The Shenzhen Activist Program`, Hyunggyu Kim, Jae Hyun Kim

Architecture Senior Theses

There is a gap between being an architecture student in western countries and working as an architect in underrepresented communities. Architect Teddy Cruz defines the role of an activist architect as "expanded mode of practice", and the task of "deigning the protocols or the interfaces between communities and spaces".

This thesis contends that architecture schools need to continue to embrace the widely-accepted norm of studios studying abroad and working in an international studio. Current study abroad programs tend to skew towards being touristic field trips and there is not a curriculum or programmatic investment in cultivating relationships between the visiting …

Aftermarket Supermarket | A Speculative Retrospective, Alexander Kim 2016 Syracuse University

Aftermarket Supermarket | A Speculative Retrospective, Alexander Kim

Architecture Senior Theses

In the preface to Delusive Spaces: Essays on Culture, Media and Technology, media theorist Eric Kluitenberg writes that “the delusion of the new”1 pollutes our theorizations of new media. This sort of technocratic fetishization of emergent technologies can only amount to a surfatial investigation of its effects or capabilities. Architectural investigations of virtual reality and other new media systems suffer from this tendency as well. Content-based experimentation and criticism obsess over the simultaneously exciting and daunting prospects of what we can now do or make with recent digital developments. There’s definite value in such endeavors, but frankly, in the grand …

A Generic Benchmark For A Mini-Split Heat Pump System, Yuchen Wang 2016 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A Generic Benchmark For A Mini-Split Heat Pump System, Yuchen Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) accounts for half of the building energy consumption in the U.S where Mini-Split Heat Pumps (MSHPs) are an emerging type of HVAC system. Their utilization has greatly increased by 34% from 2009 to 2013 and high potential EER is recognized for MSHPs. However, there is limited research involving MSHPs systems, and there is no generic benchmark for system testing and modeling. The available simulation tools such as VapCyc, GreatLab, and CYCLE_D are either too complicated, difficult to access, or not freely available. Therefore, an accurate and public share generic benchmark is essential and will …

Influence Of Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag On The Thermal Properties Of Pcm-Concrete Composite Panels, Dervilla Niall, Oliver Kinnane, Roger P. West, Sarah Mccormack

Conference papers

The thermal mass of concrete within a building can be used as an energy storage system and hence reduce the demand on the auxiliary heating and cooling systems in the building. The heat storage capacity of concrete can be enhanced by adding phase change materials (PCMs) which provide a high latent heat storage capacity. However the addition of PCM to concrete reduces the conductivity of the concrete due to the low conductivity of the PCMs. This hinders the efficient utilisation of the additional heat storage capacity provided by the PCM.

It is generally understood that the use of ground granulated …

L’Architecture Des Premières Maisons Européennes D’Alger, 1830-1865, Asma Hadjilah

Artl@s Bulletin
