This senior level course is designed to encourage students to apply a biblical Christian worldview and a limited government/free market philosophy to a study of the historical, cultural, demographic, climatic, geological, and geographical factors that have contributed to the political and economic development, as well as the relative prosperity or poverty, of various countries, regions, and cultural groupings. Special attention will be given to the contributing causes of wealth and poverty, colonialism and the post-colonial world, factors that favor or inhibit development, and the operation of the international political economy.

Contemporary postapartheid South African land struggles are haunted by the long shadow of historical dispossession. While apartheid-era forced removals are justifiably infamous, these traumatic events were moments in the more extended, less frequently referenced, and more expansive process that fundamentally shaped the South African terrain well before 1948. The South African Republic's mid-nineteenth-century assertion of ownership of all land north of the Vaal River and south of the Limpopo marked the start of a long process of racialized dispossession that rendered black people's residence in putatively white areas highly contingent and insecure throughout the former Transvaal. This study is an inquiry into the nature of the Islamic Community Milli Görüş (Islamische Gemeinschaft Milli Görüş -IGMG) movement in Germany. The movement has been identified as an “Islamist extremist group” by the German Ministry of the Interior in 2005. Germany has the highest number of Turkish immigrants in Western Europe and is home to Milli Görüş’s headquarters. We ask whether radicalization is a response to social, economic and political marginalization of Milli Görüş members in Germany.
