White House Staff, Justin S. Vaughn, José D. Villalobos 2009 Cleveland State University

White House Staff, Justin S. Vaughn, José D. Villalobos

José D. Villalobos

The White House Staff provides the bureaucratic framework that makes presidential leadership possible. Even though modern presidents continue to face constraints by the constitutional structure and political reality in successfully straddling the expectations gap that continues to enlarge, the staff presents the president with his best opportunity to anticipate and exploit leadership opportunities in the best case and manage crisis and cope with challenges in the worst. In recent decades, scholarly efforts to analyze the influence and importance of the White House staff has continued apace the institution’s own evolution. In this chapter, we evaluate the state of these efforts …

Public Values, Health Inequality, And Alternative Notions Of A “Fair” Response, Elizabeth Rigby, Erika Blacksher, Claire Espey 2009 University of Houston - Main

Public Values, Health Inequality, And Alternative Notions Of A “Fair” Response, Elizabeth Rigby, Erika Blacksher, Claire Espey

Elizabeth Rigby

The fact that disadvantaged people generally die younger and suffer more disease than those with more resources is gaining ground as a major policy concern in the United States. Yet, we know little about how public values inform public opinion regarding policy interventions to address these disparities. This paper presents findings from an exploratory study of the public’s values and priorities as they relate to social inequalities in health. Forty-three subjects were presented with a scenario depicting health inequalities by social class and were given the opportunity to alter the distribution of health outcomes. Participants’ responses fell into one of …

The Limits And Opportunities Of Networks: Municipalities And Canadian Climate Change Policy, Christopher D. Gore 2009 Ryerson University

The Limits And Opportunities Of Networks: Municipalities And Canadian Climate Change Policy, Christopher D. Gore

Christopher D Gore

Research on climate change policy and politics has become increasingly focused on the actions and influence of subnational governments. In North America, this attention has been particularly focused on why subnational governments have taken action in the absence of national leadership, what effect action might have on future national climate policy, and whether the collective action of networks of municipal governments are reshaping and challenging the character of national and global climate governance. This paper examines Canadian municipal climate in light of the absence of a comprehensive and effective climate national strategy. The paper considers various reasons why local governments …

The Small N Methodological Challenges Of Analyzing Regional Integration, Gaspare M. Genna, Philippe DeLombaerde 2009 The University of Texas at El Paso

The Small N Methodological Challenges Of Analyzing Regional Integration, Gaspare M. Genna, Philippe Delombaerde

Gaspare M Genna

As the number of regional integration organizations increases, the attention to case selection in small-N qualitative analysis becomes more necessary in order to avoid selection biases that could produce results with doubtful generalizations. This paper addresses the problem of selecting cases and offers solutions to potential pitfalls in research. First we examine various research designs in qualitative methods and discuss the problems of selecting observations on the dependent variable. We next discuss the operational definition of regions. In order to select from a population of observations, it is important to understand what is and what is not included. Finally, a …

Civil Society’S Role In Peace-Building: Relevance Of The Cypriot Case, Direnc Kanol 2009 University of Siena

Civil Society’S Role In Peace-Building: Relevance Of The Cypriot Case, Direnc Kanol

Direnç Kanol

This article argues that the rationale of the current conflict resolution strategy for resolving the Cyprus problem is problematic. Time and energy should be spent more on peace-building efforts that penetrate into ideas and identities of the Cypriots, than on negotiations that take place between the leaders. Greek and Turkish Cypriots should have a sense of ‘we’ based on equality rather than recognizing each other as the ‘enemy’ in case a durable solution to the problem can be found. In spite of the current political rhetoric which is very negative, civil society can be a crucial actor in reversing this …

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer 2009 Temple University School of Law

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

The approximately two million gay and lesbian elders in the United States are an underserved and understudied population. At a time when gay men and lesbians enjoy an unprecedented degree of social acceptance and legal protection, many elders face the daily challenges of aging isolated from family, detached from the larger gay and lesbian community, and ignored by mainstream aging initiatives. Drawing on materials from law, history, and social theory, this book integrates practical proposals for reform with larger issues of sexuality and identity. Beginning with a summary of existing demographic data and offering a historical overview of pre-Stonewall views …

The Effect Of Representational Gender On Policy Preferences In U.S. Municipalities, Mirya R. Holman 2009 Florida Atlantic University

The Effect Of Representational Gender On Policy Preferences In U.S. Municipalities, Mirya R. Holman

Mirya R Holman

The research presented here explores the effect of gender and gender consciousness on the policy preference of local elected officials. Remedying a gap in the scholarship on women in local office, I examine the attitudes of mayors and council members on a variety of urban policy issues. First positing a gender gap theory of representative attitudes, I find almost no differences in policy preferences between men and women serving in local office. As an alternative, I posit and test a gender consciousness theory of policy preferences. Using open-ended survey data, I find that possessing a gender consciousness has a significant …

Justicia Constitucional Y Derechos Humanos En América Latina, Julio Ríos-Figueroa 2009 CIDE

Justicia Constitucional Y Derechos Humanos En América Latina, Julio Ríos-Figueroa

Julio Ríos-Figueroa

Neurodynamics Of An Election, Armando F. Rocha, Fabio T. Rocha, Marcelo N. Burattini, Eduardo Massad

Armando F Rocha

Variables influencing decision-making in real settings, as in the case of voting decisions, are uncontrollable and in many times even unknown to the experimenter. In this case, the experimenter has to study the intention to decide (vote) as close as possible in time to the moment of the real decision (election day). Here, we investigated the brain activity associated with the voting intention declared 1 week before the election day of the Brazilian Firearms Control Referendum about prohibiting the commerce of firearms. Two alliances arose in the Congress to run the campaigns for YES (for the prohibition of firearm commerce) …

State, Youth And Electoral Violence In Nigeria’S Fourth Republic: The Imperative Of A Nationally Cordinated Youth Empowerment Program, David O. Moveh Mr 2009 Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

State, Youth And Electoral Violence In Nigeria’S Fourth Republic: The Imperative Of A Nationally Cordinated Youth Empowerment Program, David O. Moveh Mr

David O Moveh PhD.

One manifestation of Nigeria’s crisis of governance since the advent of civil rule in 1999 is the spate of youth violence that has characterized the electoral process. From the plains up north to the creeks in the south, Nigeria’s electoral process within the past decade has been mired in violence so much as to make mockery of the democratization process. A lot of works (Bangura: 1997, Momoh: 2000, Yau: 2000) have studied how Nigeria’s economic crisis and the attendant structural adjustment programme of the 1980s resulted in the alienation and marginalization of the youth, thereby exacerbating the whole phenomenon of …

A Comparative Study Of Globalization And Democratic Consolidation In Ghana And Nigeria (1990-2008), David O. Moveh Mr 2009 Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

A Comparative Study Of Globalization And Democratic Consolidation In Ghana And Nigeria (1990-2008), David O. Moveh Mr

David O Moveh PhD.

The implications of globalization for the developing world continue to attract the attention of scholars across the globe; yet, scant attention is paid to the dynamics of its political consequences. This paper is a comparative study of the external linkages and regime trajectories of Ghana and Nigeria; within the period 1990-2008. Evidence gathered on both countries substantiates the propositions that: the more a peripheral state derives huge revenues from commodity export, the more it will be able to exercise a significant degree of independence by resisting external pressure to imbibe liberal democratic values and vice versa. Similarly, the higher a …

Power, Conflict And Resistance: Social Movements, Networks And Hierarchies, Athina Karatzogianni, Andrew Robinson 2009 University of Hull

Power, Conflict And Resistance: Social Movements, Networks And Hierarchies, Athina Karatzogianni, Andrew Robinson

Athina Karatzogianni

Drawing on theory by Deleuze and others on the structure of hierarchies and networks, the authors seek to reinterpret World Systems Theory in order to engage with issues of power, resistance, and conflict in the contemporary world. The authors engage with the world-systems, contemporary scholarship in global politics, and new concepts: global cities, bifurcations, hegemonic transitions, the relationship between capitalism and the state, the position of East Asia, active and reactive network movements. They develop new theory to interpret empirical cases of resistance and conflict including: Afghanistan, Iraq, anti-terror paranoia, political Islam, specific indigenous and activist movements
