A Comparative Study Of Globalization And Democratic Consolidation In Ghana And Nigeria (1990-2008), David O. Moveh Mr
David O Moveh PhD.
The implications of globalization for the developing world continue to attract the attention of scholars across the globe; yet, scant attention is paid to the dynamics of its political consequences. This paper is a comparative study of the external linkages and regime trajectories of Ghana and Nigeria; within the period 1990-2008. Evidence gathered on both countries substantiates the propositions that: the more a peripheral state derives huge revenues from commodity export, the more it will be able to exercise a significant degree of independence by resisting external pressure to imbibe liberal democratic values and vice versa. Similarly, the higher a …

Mass migration is thought to be a major factor behind the rise of the radical right. But while there clearly is a relationship (particularly in Western Europe), the connection is not as straightforward as is often assumed. Higher levels of immigration in the three regions examined in this report —North America, Western Europe, and Central and Eastern Europe — do not automatically correlate to more votes for radical-right parties.
The success of radical-right parties has been uneven in Europe. Since 1980, there have only been a handful of radical-right parties in Western Europe and in Central and Eastern Europe which …

The Populist Radical Right: A Pathological Normalcy, Cas Mudde

In recent years more and more studies have pointed to the limitations of demand-side explanations of the electoral success of populist radical right parties. They argue that supply-side factors need to be included as well. While previous authors have made these claims on the basis of purely empirical arguments, this article provides a (meta)theoretical argumentation for the importance of supply-side explanations. It takes issue with the dominant view on the populist radical right, which considers it to be alien to mainstream values in contemporary western democracies – the ‘normal pathology thesis’. Instead, it argues that the populist radical right should …

Is The European Union Ready For Fdi From Emerging Markets?, Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes

This chapter asks whether the European Union Member States are ready for inward Foreign Direct Investment from the Emerging Markets. It concludes that European Union Member States have relatively open Foreign Direct Investment regimes in the international context, and yet instances of protectionism have been apparent in the recent period. However, protectionism has occurred both vis-a-vis Foreign Direct Investment from the Global South as well as from within the European Union, particularly in the so-called 'strategic' industries.

The State Of Nature: Chinese Sage Kings, Hobbes, And Challenge Of Comparative Political Thought, Jon D. Carlson

This paper contributes to the growing interest in comparative political theory by examining hypothetical antecedents in both Chinese and Western political thought and how these thought experiments impact conceptions of ‘good government’ and political behavior. A fundamental starting point in Western thought is the ‘state of nature’, commonly characterized by competing visions provided by Hobbes and Rousseau. From each, one derives assumptions about the purpose of politics, society, and appropriate behavior with regard to government. Similarly, reference to the “Sage Kings” of Chinese antiquity plays a comparable role in classical Chinese political philosophy. The reference invokes an idealized hypothetical past, …

Separate And Unequal: Post-Tsunami Aid Distribution In Southern India, Daniel P. Aldrich
Daniel P Aldrich
Objective. Disasters are a regular occurrence throughout the world. Whether all eligible victims of a catastrophe receive similar amounts of aid from governments and donors following a crisis remains an open question. Methods. I use data on 62 similarly damaged inland fishing villages in five districts of southeastern India following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to measure the causal influence of caste, location, wealth, and bridging social capital on the receipt of aid. Using two-limit tobit and negative binomial models, I investigate the factors that influence the time spent in refugee camps, receipt of an initial aid packet, and receipt …
