An Investigation Into Supervision Techniques To Support Shy Csd Students, Pamela Reese
Pamela Reese
This article investigates supervision techniques that enabled graduate students who labeled themselves as shy to participate in a summer clinical experience. Through detailed analyses, it is shown how peer collaboration, continued modeling, technology, and humor allowed two shy students to successfully complete the experience. The article proposes that these supervision techniques may help students transcend an intrinsic shyness.
Musical Training Influences Auditory Temporal Processing, 2016 East Tennessee State University
Musical Training Influences Auditory Temporal Processing, Saravanan Elangovan, Nicole Payne, Jacek Smurzynski, Marc A. Fagelson
ETSU Faculty Works
Background: A link between musical expertise and auditory temporal processing abilities was examined.
Material and methods: Trained musicians (n=13) and non-musicians (n=12) were tested on speech tasks (phonetic identification, speech recognition in noise) and non-speech tasks (temporal gap detection).
Results: Results indicated musicians had shorter between-channel gap detection thresholds and sharper phonetic identification functions, suggesting that perceptual reorganization following musical training assists basic temporal auditory processes.
Conclusions: In general, our results provide a conceptual advance in understanding how musical training influences speech processing, an ability which, when impaired, can affect speech and reading competency.
The Application Of Clear Speech In Electrolaryngeal Speakers, 2016 The University of Western Ontario
The Application Of Clear Speech In Electrolaryngeal Speakers, Steven R. Cox
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The present work was comprised of a series of experiments that investigated the application of clear speech (CS) in a group of electrolaryngeal (EL) speakers. Three experiments were conducted to assess the impact of CS on three important aspects of EL speech. More specifically, Experiment 1 sought to identify the impact of CS on EL speakers’ word and consonant intelligibility; Experiment 2 examined the influence of CS on the acoustic characteristics of words and vowels in EL speech; and finally, Experiment 3 sought to identify the influence of CS produced by EL speakers on auditory-perceptual ratings by naïve listeners. Results …
Collaboration Occurring Between Professionals In Today's Schools, 2016 Illinois State University
Collaboration Occurring Between Professionals In Today's Schools, Kara Lynn Doglio
Theses and Dissertations
The collaborative service delivery model is beneficial in its approach as it allows educators and SLPs to work together to address communication impairments in naturalistic settings in order to maximize the functional potential of all students. The current utilization of collaboration as a viable service delivery option is unknown. The purpose of this study was to identify whether collaboration was occurring and with whom it was occurring. This study also sought to identify similarities and differences across four participant groups regarding perceived beliefs and reported practices in professional collaboration. While administrators took a separate survey than educators (general and special …
Maternal Anxiety Associated With Newborn Hearing Screening, 2016 RTI International
Maternal Anxiety Associated With Newborn Hearing Screening, Stephen J. Tueller, Karl R. White
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
The purpose of this study was to determine if newborn hearing screening increases maternal anxiety. Mothers whose infants were screened for hearing were asked how worried they were prior to hospital discharge and again six weeks later. They were also asked if they were more concerned about their baby’s hearing than they were about other aspects of the infant’s health and behavior.
Results showed that mothers worried as much or more about many other aspects of their infants’ health and behavior as about hearing. Mothers whose infants had a false positive screening result were initially more worried about hearing than …

Readability, User-Friendliness, And Key Content Analysis Of Newborn Hearing Screening Brochures, Nannette C. Nicholson, Samuel R. Atcherson, Patti F. Martin, Mary Gunn Spragins, Lauren Schlagenhauf, Richard I. Zraick
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Readability, user-friendliness, and key content are important components of newborn screening brochure design. Health information at a sixth grade or below reading level, designed for ease of navigation, with easily identifiable “action steps” can help adults with limited literacy skills find, understand, and use health information. The purpose of this study was to quantify the readability, user-friendliness, and key content components of newborn hearing screening brochures. Five readability formulae (FRE, F–K GL, FOG, FORCAST, and SMOG) were used to estimate reading levels of English language EHDI brochures (N = 48). Twenty-three participants assessed brochures for user-friendliness. Three participants assessed …
Wic Participation As A Risk Factor For Loss To Follow-Up In The Wisconsin Ehdi System, 2016 Department of Health Services, Wisconsin
Wic Participation As A Risk Factor For Loss To Follow-Up In The Wisconsin Ehdi System, Elizabeth L. Seeliger, Rebecca A. Martin, Andrea N. Gromoske, Anne B. Harris
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
In 2011, Wisconsin’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program, Wisconsin Sound Beginnings (WSB), developed multiple strategies to reduce loss to follow-up (LTFU) for babies who did not pass their newborn hearing screening: Medical Outreach, Family Outreach, Regional Outreach and WIC Alert. WSB evaluated the outcomes of babies identified as at-risk for LTFU to determine whether WIC participation was an indicator of their risk for LTFU. Additionally, WSB evaluated whether babies who were identified as at-risk for LTFU and receiving WIC services in two WIC projects serving areas and populations with known health disparities, were at even greater risk for …
Professional Competence To Promote Resilience For Children Living In Poverty, 2016 Fontbonne University
Professional Competence To Promote Resilience For Children Living In Poverty, Jenna M. Voss, Susan Lenihan
Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
Poverty has a tremendous impact on the educational results of all children, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. With targeted, evidence-based interventions during the first three years of life, Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) professionals can protect children from the numerous risk factors which impede development. While EHDI professionals often serve children and families living in poverty, it remains the case that the professional preparation programs offer limited instruction and experience in how to best serve children and families living in poverty. The purpose of this study was to explore professional preparedness to serve children who …
Promoting Consistent Use Of The Communication Function Classification System (Cfcs), 2016 Western University
Promoting Consistent Use Of The Communication Function Classification System (Cfcs), Barbara Jane Cunningham, Mary Jo Hidecker, Nancy Thomas-Stonell, Peter Rosenbaum
PRECISe Preschool Speech and Language Publications
Purpose: We developed a Knowledge Translation (KT) intervention to standardize the way speech-language pathologists working in Ontario Canada’s Preschool Speech and Language Program (PSLP) used the Communication Function Classification System (CFCS). This tool was being used as part of a provincial program evaluation and standardizing its use was critical for establishing reliability and validity within the provincial dataset.
Method: Two theoretical foundations – Diffusion of Innovations and the Communication Persuasion Matrix – were used to develop and disseminate the intervention to standardize use of the CFCS among a cohort speech-language pathologists. A descriptive pre-test/post-test study was used to evaluate the …

Suicide Prevention: The Professional And Moral Responsibilities Of The Speech-Language Pathologist, Madelyn Anderson
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this paper is to explore the possible connection between suicide and stuttering, identify warning signs and risk factors of suicide as they apply to our clients, and examine the moral implications and professional responsibilities of speech-language pathologists as they pertain to suicide prevention. From the research I conducted, I found that, as a whole, the national community of speech-language pathologists does not recognize any correlation between stuttering and suicide. However, as dictated by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Code of Ethics, we as speech-language pathologists are obligated to make referrals outside of our profession as the need …
Understanding The Stigma Of Hearing Loss And How If Affects The Patient And Treatment Process, 2016 The University of Akron
Understanding The Stigma Of Hearing Loss And How If Affects The Patient And Treatment Process, Carolyn M. Zaitzew
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project is a literature review on the topic of hearing loss related stigma and the effects it has on persons with hearing loss. There has not been very much research conducted on this topic, which limited the paper’s content. Through researching and analyzing previous studies, it was found that a stigma related to hearing loss still exists today and has multiple effects on persons with hearing loss. The stigma can put negative stress on patients with hearing loss, both psychologically and socially, and may even cause them to not seek or accept treatment when needed. Younger adults are more …
