Predicting Dialectic Behavioral Treatment Outcomes In Veterans At High Risk For Suicide, Courtney Stich
Predicting Dialectic Behavioral Treatment Outcomes In Veterans At High Risk For Suicide, Courtney Stich
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Numerous studies have shown that veterans are at higher risk for suicide compared to the U.S. general population. Despite significant effort, awareness amongst clinicians and policymakers, these rates continue to increase. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy has shown great success in treating suicidality and emotional dysregulation due to mental illness such as Borderline Personality Disorder, yet has never been studied in the veteran population. The initial study found that veterans responded equally to DBT and TAU. This study looked at what clinical and demographic characteristics could predict DBT treatment success. Veterans who identified as women, with higher education, and more suicide attempts …

Systematic Review Of Veterans' Coping Strategies: How Can Rural Veterans Improve Their Quality Of Life?, Tracey Marie Barnett, Alexa Smith-Osborne, Freda Barnett-Braddock
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
This systematic review examines the empirical literature on an emerging body of coping strategies (CS), both civilian readjustment and health-risk related, experienced by United States military veterans exposed to combat stress and other military lifestyle stressors. Studies that met inclusion criteria were selected among quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO) criteria and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) were applied to all studies. Seventeen reports meeting a priori inclusion criteria were extracted from 107 studies accessed through 9 electronic databases. Data were synthesized to investigate two research questions informing …
Student Perceptions Of Services For Veterans And Military Personnel, Philip Parsons
Student Perceptions Of Services For Veterans And Military Personnel, Philip Parsons
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Many Veterans are returning from the War on Terror and making their way to universities. Due to the many aspects of war and military life many maybe, or are experiencing some level of mental health issue/s. As more Veterans make this transition, resources may not be available for them to be successful in the classroom (Whitley, Tschudi, & Gieber, 2013). After reviewing the literature, a suitable instrument to measure these variables was not available. The researcher developed a survey and sampled students of one Midwestern public university. The variables included basic demographic questions and perceptions of Veterans and the services …
The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Processing Therapy (Cpt) In The Treatment Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) Among Veterans Who Have Experienced Military Sexual Trauma, Nicole Humble
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
Military sexual trauma is a growing problem in the United States military. With the integration of women in the infantry units in all military branches it is even more of a concern. Military sexual trauma though does not happen to only women. The purpose of this research project was to take a known evidence based therapy used by the Veterans Health Administration Department of Veterans Affairs, and see if it is effective in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder in military sexual trauma victims. The VA uses many evidence-based therapies from Prolonged Exposure, cognitive behavior therapy, EMDR, and also …
Posttraumatic Outcomes Among Veterans: The Predictive Role Of Exposure To Interpersonal Trauma, Mariah Rooney O'Brien
Posttraumatic Outcomes Among Veterans: The Predictive Role Of Exposure To Interpersonal Trauma, Mariah Rooney O'Brien
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to better understand how historical experiences of interpersonal trauma may predict posttraumatic stress symptoms and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among combat veterans who have served in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF, 2001-2014) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF, 2002-2010). A better understanding of the full spectrum of experience related to trauma may have profound implications for treatment, particularly in aiding social workers in the treatment of posttraumatic stress symptoms and the facilitation of posttraumatic growth in treatment-seeking veterans. This quantitative study used secondary data (n = 110), which was collected between 2005 and 2007 from a …

The State of the American Veteran: The Chicagoland Veterans Study, conducted by the University of Southern California (USC) School of Social Work Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families (CIR) and in partnership with Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work, is an effort to provide data-driven recommendations for serving the large population of veterans residing in Chicago and the surrounding area. Service members encounter a series of needs as they transition out of the military. These include securing employment and housing, addressing physical or mental health issues and adjusting to civilian culture. The ease through which …
"War Was Either Going To Be A Skeleton In My Closet Or I Could Try To Make It Something Else" : An Exploration Of Moral Injury, Moral Repair, And Veteran Anti-War Activism, Zoe Rose Rudow
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study investigates the impact of collective anti-war organizing on veterans’ experiences of moral injury. Moral injury refers to the emotional, psychological, and spiritual unrest that emerges as the result of “perpetrating, failing to prevent, [or] bearing witness to… acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations” in the context of war (Litz et al., 2009, p 695). While current literature centers treatment for moral injury through clinical interventions, this study investigates if and how anti-war activism can provide a process for moral repair. Qualitative interviews with six veteran anti- war activists reveal that many intervention steps proposed …
Exploring Mental Health Treatment For Female Veterans In The Us : Assessing The Influences On Female Veterans In Selection Of Treatment Location, Comparing Va And Non-Va Settings, Bethany J. Ferry
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative survey based study was to learn why women veterans choose VA versus non-VA mental health treatment when they need care. The study was designed to gain insight into choices that women veterans make when selecting mental health care treatment centers, and what motivates them in this choice. Women cited a number of barriers to treatment, particularly regarding accessing treatment through the VA. These barriers included limited appointment times, high turnover of providers, insufficient numbers of veterans and female veterans as providers, and feeling uncomfortable in the treatment environment.

Workplace Attachment Among Social Workers In The Veteran Health Care Sector : A Mixed Methods Study, Michael Lawrence Clarkson-Hendrix
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study expanded the application of attachment theory, referred to as workplace attachment theory in this study, to investigate worker behavior, principally in relation to retention and turnover among social workers in a Veteran health care sector agency. Interdisciplinary collaboration, including whether it was related to workplace attachment, was also a significant feature. Three main aims were to identify (i) workplace attachment experiences; (ii) relational, social and physical contingencies that affected workplace attachment security; and (iii) the extent to which workplace attachment is influenced by interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a sample of social workers, a mixed methods research design involving a …

Differences In Hospice Care Between Veterans And Non-Veterans, Tonia Smith
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
The differences in hospice care needs between United States veterans and non-veterans was explored using a systematic review research methodology that consisted of 18 articles. After a review of previous research studies, it was found that veterans tended to want their healthcare providers to be more open and to the point about their diagnosis than non-veterans did. Both non-veterans and veterans wanted to be in control of their end of life cares. Non-veterans were more likely to want their family and friends around compared to veterans who were less likely to want people around. Veterans who had post-traumatic stress disorder …
Clinical And Criminal Justice Outcomes In The Jail Diversion And Trauma Recovery (Jdtr) Program, Daniel Harold Ringhoff
Clinical And Criminal Justice Outcomes In The Jail Diversion And Trauma Recovery (Jdtr) Program, Daniel Harold Ringhoff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This mixed methods study evaluated clinical and criminal justice outcomes of the Florida Jail Diversion and Trauma Recovery (JDTR) program that utilized compensated veteran peer mentors. Quantitative results showed veteran participation in JDTR improved clinical outcomes, such as PTSD symptoms, function difficulty and depression scores, but not criminal justice outcomes such as re-arrest rates. Study limitations, however, prevent the drawing of conclusions regarding the potential effectiveness of veteran peer interventions improving criminal justice outcomes. Qualitative results showed participants overwhelmingly viewed their assigned veteran peer mentor as a "peer" and rated them as "very important" to their future success. Improvements in …
Impact Of Community Investment In Safety Net Services On Rates Of Unsheltered Homelessness Among Veterans, Ann Elizabeth Montgomery, Jamison Fargo, Thomas H. Byrne
Impact Of Community Investment In Safety Net Services On Rates Of Unsheltered Homelessness Among Veterans, Ann Elizabeth Montgomery, Jamison Fargo, Thomas H. Byrne
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Unsheltered homelessness among veterans has declined rapidly since 2009; however, more than one-third of veterans experiencing homelessness stayed in places not meant for human habitation during 2014. Research has identified a negative relationship between federal spending on the social safety net and community level rates of homelessness, but not specifically for veterans. The present study assessed whether investment in veteran-specific safety net resources predicted changes in the rate of unsheltered veteran homelessness. Increases in Veterans Affairs (VA) medical care expenditures were significantly associated with a decline in unsheltered veteran homelessness, perhaps explained by additional VA resources aimed at identifying and …
Moral Injury In Veterans : A Theoretical Investigation Of The Psychic, Moral And Social Sequelae Of War Trauma, Sarah C. Towers
Moral Injury In Veterans : A Theoretical Investigation Of The Psychic, Moral And Social Sequelae Of War Trauma, Sarah C. Towers
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Although the idea that a violation of deeply held moral and ethical values can result in a profound psychic, social and spiritual wounding is an ancient one, the exploration of the phenomenon of moral injury in the field of mental health has only recently gained traction. Moral injury is increasingly being regarded as its own psychological phenomenon, one that shares symptomology with PTSD, but is also distinct, and as yet not sufficiently accounted for in current PTSD criteria. This theoretical thesis charts the evolving clinical construct of moral injury and draws on two bodies of theory, narrative theory and adult …
A Dereliction Of Duty: Homeless Veterans In America, Christopher R. Fee
A Dereliction Of Duty: Homeless Veterans In America, Christopher R. Fee
English Faculty Publications
U.S. government efforts to help homeless veterans in America are not enough.
When I first began grappling with homelessness issues in my local community quite a number of years ago, Dave, then-director of the local homeless shelter in our small town, told me a story that illustrates some of the special circumstances faced by homeless veterans in America.
Dave said a community of homeless vets had based themselves in caves in the hills outside of town, and after one was stricken with pneumonia and had to be hospitalized, his ongoing recovery left health care providers with a thorny dilemma. Clearly, …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has affected millions of veterans who have served in the United States Military. PTSD causes severe impairments in one's mental health, and is correlated with homelessness, substance abuse, and unemployment. Recently, the United States Department Veterans Affairs has been funded more to improve services of mental health and other health care services. Specifically, this study was interested in exploring the perceptions that veterans have of the quality of services that have been provided for PTSD.
Results indicated that the participants who utilized services felt individual and family therapy services were most helpful in reducing PTSD symptoms. …

Social Work Students’ Knowledge Of Veterans’ Needs And Issues, Sylvia H. Samy
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The veteran population is under-served. Due to the current circumstances of increased deployment and the rate of returning soldiers from current wars (Iraq and Afghanistan); there is an increased demand for competent social workers to provide them with services. Furthermore, the Department of Veteran Affairs is the number one employer of social workers. Hence, measuring the knowledge of social work students is essential to explore their competence of working with the veteran population. The study presents an exploratory research method, using a quantitative approach. Further, students’ knowledge was measured in ten domains: Benefits and Services, Service Related Disabilities, PTSD/Trauma, Childcare, …

Memorial Day is a day for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
As we gather around the grill with loved ones, let's also remember veterans who survived their term of service only to find themselves without a place of their own to celebrate holidays.
When I first began grappling with homelessness in my local community years ago, Dave, then the director of the local homeless shelter in our small town, told me a story which illustrates some of the special circumstances faced by homeless veterans in America. [excerpt]
Deployment Issues For Women Veterans And Their Children, Alea J. Johnson
Deployment Issues For Women Veterans And Their Children, Alea J. Johnson
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
Deployment creates unique experiences and issues for women veterans and their children. Although each family has their own understanding of deployment, examining common issues throughout families may inform future practice with military families. For this research the deployment issues that are present for women veterans and their children were examined. A secondary data analysis analyzed eight participants (n=8) and their children who had discussions regarding non-deployment and deployment issues in addition to completing problem solving tasks. This study found that deployment issues for these families were sadness about the deployed parent being gone, talking about deployment, communicating during deployment, missing …
