This study explores if licensed practicing social workers in the state of Minnesota perceive themselves as competent to work effectively with military, veterans, and their families. A qualitative survey was emailed by Minnesota Social Services Association to their members. A total of eight participants responded to the survey. Each of these participants indicated that he or she worked directly with a military-connected client the military. Content analysis was conducted and two themes were found. The majority of participants described not feeling prepared to work with this population and indicated a desire for more education. One of the limitations of this …

In this systematic literature review, research regarding veterans experiencing insomnia and the utilization of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia as an effective treatment modality were synthesized. Using the sociology research database SocINDEX; nine studies examining the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a treatment option for insomnia and insomnia related symptoms met criteria for the review. The Behavioral Model of Insomnia was used as the conceptual framework for this review. This framework was utilized to explore Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as an effective means of treating veterans experiencing insomnia. In this systematic review, literature and empirical intervention studies pertaining to the treatment of trauma among veterans using a Complementary and Alternative Medicine was analyzed. Using two databases, PsycINFO and PILOTS, 10 studies were located and key data was identified on theoretical foundations, therapy components, populations being served, as well as outcomes of interventions treating trauma among veterans via Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Each study was analyzed in full, to determine types of Complementary and Alternative Medicine interventions as well as results of the interventions utilized. PTSD’s prevalence in U.S. military veterans requires a greater understanding of the disorder as well as knowledge of the concept of PTG. PTG has been described as a positive outcome from a traumatic experience (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996). The purpose of this study was to explore secondary traumatic stress and family functioning in military families. Six licensed mental health professionals, including social workers and a marriage and family therapist with experience working directly with military families participated in this study. This systematic review examined the literature regarding veterans experiencing PTSD and the use of group Cognitive Processing Therapy as an intervention. Two databases, PILOTS and socINDEX, were used to identify the 10 best studies that met criteria for this review. The 10 studies were analyzed and findings for this study supported group Cognitive Processing Therapy in reducing symptoms of PTSD for veterans. Furthermore, this study compared findings from studies done in residential PTSD programs compared to non-residential programs. This research paper focuses on moral injury, which is a lesser-known psychological problem that veterans face. Veterans face several challenges when they return home from deployment. These challenges are associated generally with combat experiences. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify the effectiveness of Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure in reducing PTSD symptomology in United States military veterans. The present research study attempted to identify individual factors that may lead to a more effective treatment outcome with one of the two therapies that are frequently utilized in the Veterans Affairs Health Care System. Thirteen studies met inclusion criteria for the present study. The findings demonstrated both Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure are effective in reducing PTSD symptomology in veterans. The differences in hospice care needs between United States veterans and non-veterans was explored using a systematic review research methodology that consisted of 18 articles. After a review of previous research studies, it was found that veterans tended to want their healthcare providers to be more open and to the point about their diagnosis than non-veterans did. Both non-veterans and veterans wanted to be in control of their end of life cares. Deployment creates unique experiences and issues for women veterans and their children. Although each family has their own understanding of deployment, examining common issues throughout families may inform future practice with military families. For this research the deployment issues that are present for women veterans and their children were examined. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an eight-week Mind-Body Pain Management group at a VA Health Care System in the Midwest. The Mind-Body Pain Management group is offered to Veterans who exhibit symptoms of chronic physical pain. The military veteran population has received national attention for the struggles some of its members have had with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
