Reading Matters: What The Research Reveals About Reading, Libraries And Community, Catherine Sheldrick Ross, Lynne (E.F.) Mckechnie, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

Drawing upon data published in a variety of scholarly journals, monographs in education, cultural studies, media studies, and libraries and information studies, as well as their own research findings, these authors shatter some of the popular myths about reading and offer a cogent case for the library's vital role in the life of a reader. By providing a road map to research findings on reading, reader-response, audiences, genres, the value of popular culture, the social nature of reading, and the role of libraries in promoting literacy and reading, this guide offers a clear rationale for making pleasure reading a priority …

Booklists: Should- And Want-To-Reads, Stephanie Wiegand, Sarah Naper

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Booklists ... librarians love them, but they also raise many questions. This session explores where today's libraries fit in the dichotomy between what we 'should read,' what we 'want to read.' Our first stop on this exploration will be the concept of a booklist. Highlights of this part of the adventure will be: testing attendee's knowledge of current booklists, a review of booklist sources, and identification of OCLC booklist highlights. The literary canon will be the second focus of our session. After defining this concept, we will ask attendees to join us in a discussion of the library's role in …

This study quantitatively describes a particular manifestation of the ubiquitous but often undocumented problem of web resource instability. It points to many possible innovative solutions, such as instructional and archival interventions by librarians.

The ‘Meat-Ax’ On The Desktop: A Digital Edition Of Cather's Early Journalism, Andrew Jewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

Willa Cather's work as a journalist, writing for mostly Lincoln and Pittsburgh newspapers when she was in her twenties, is a remarkable and wide-ranging body of work that offers significant insights into major critical questions about Cather and American literary and cultural history. Since her writings were largely critical responses to theatrical productions, books, and music, the articles provide a detailed and rich record of her emerging aesthetic sensibilities during this crucial period of development. Additionally, since she covered such a wide variety of performances, companies, and works, her journalism offers a detailed view of the culture of the 1890s …
