Producing eBooks is a complex task. Although they follow the well know book metaphor, Adobe Acrobat (1) eBooks may also include audiovisual media, hyperlinking structures, other interactive content and information layers. The process of production goes through an iterative cycle, where content authors team with designers, programmers, media producers and information architects. Its then crucial to optimize this process using software tools to help structuring the content, faciliting groupworking and metadata annotation. In this paper, we propose a new tool aiming the easy description of the relationships amongst different pieces of content and the fast prototyping of the navigation schema …

Cultivating Intelligence: Ecole Polytechnique De Montreal's New Library., Richard Dumont
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
More than just a book repository, the new library at École Polytechnique de Montréal can be better described as a hotbed of intellectual activity. The library was specifically designed to foster learning, encourage research, facilitate collaboration and stimulate new ideas through its combination of technology, information, science and culture. From spatial planning to equipment to furnishings, everything was designed around the idea of an “intellectual forum.” This article presents the process by which the idea became reality.

The process of teaching and learning on post-graduate courses should cover the ability to stimulate the academic environment through research and investigation, encouraging teachers and students to take a constructive attitude that challenges academic-scientific productivity. For scientific ability and the maturity of built knowledge to take place, the incentive to undertake research is fundamental, as is the corresponding mastery of electronic instrumentation and technologies. In this sense, the Library Service of the São Carlos School of Engineering of São Paulo University, in partnership with the Department of Mechanical Engineering has offered formal and specific training since 1995, within the User …

The Politics Of Embedding: Library As A Partner Not Support Service., Peter Stubley
The Politics Of Embedding: Library As A Partner Not Support Service., Peter Stubley
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Library that considers itself to have the best services in the world may still find itself under-appreciated or – worse still – isolated, unless it delivers those services to its customers in a pro-active manner. Moreover, unless it actively engages with the strategic directions of both the over-arching institution and its individual units – the University and its academic Departments – it risks being ignored and marginalised from the core business of the institution. For too long libraries have, with a degree of modesty and satisfaction, considered themselves as ‘support services’ but now is the time to launch ourselves …

It addresses the relevance of the quality assessment processes as instruments of support for managing information services. It describes the implementation of the Product and Service Quality Assessment Program (PAQ) of University of São Paulo’s Integrated Library System (SIBi/USP), reporting two phases performed so far. Phase one, performed in 2002, assessed products and services of SIBi’ libraries by means of questionnaires and interview for data collection. Five electronic questionnaires were applied comprising the SERVQUAL – tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy dimensions and an interview was applied to library users, using three questions. Phase two of PAQ was performed in …

Two initiatives have been undertaken at Carnegie Mellon University, one to address issues of accountability relative to information literacy and the other to learn more about graduate students’ information gathering behavior. In response to changing accreditation requirements, new evidence for student learning is being required. Thus a program to concentrate on the information literacy skills of undergraduates, particularly in major fields of study, has been started. The other initiative focuses on understanding the current information gathering behaviors of graduate students. Outcomes from this study are being incorporated into services directed at graduate students. Questions about how to address these needs …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Consortium CRUESP/Libraries formed by the three São Paulo State Universities Library System, USP, UNESP, and UNICAMP, seeks to offer specialized services and products to the academic community. With the expanding of the available information sources to the Universities, researchers need to visit various sites from diverse information providers, possessing different access interfaces. This demands time for the user to know these interfaces, which are not always user-friendly, and utilize the same search terms numerous times. With the technological advance it has become evident the possibility of the creation of a unified search interface, using the international communication protocols such …

Learning Communities And Librarians At Arizona State University., Jennifer Duvernay, Sheila J. Young
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In the Fall Semester of 2003, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at Arizona State University, for the first time, offered freshmen the opportunity to participate in a Learning Community. Although there are several types of learning communities, the CLAS Learning Communities at ASU utilize a fully integrated model and each community is based on a theme integrating several disciplines that examine the theme from different perspectives. One such theme, “Human Disease and Society,” integrates English, Biology, and Philosophy. Courses in English, Political Science, History, and Religion are the foundation for the theme “War, Culture and Memory.” A …
The Importance Of Having Data-Sets., Ronald Dekker
The Importance Of Having Data-Sets., Ronald Dekker
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Much scientific research is based on the gathering and analysis of measurement data. Scientific data-sets are, at least, intermediate results in many scientific research projects. For some time data-sets weren’t even published and even if they were published it was mostly as a (not re-usable) by-product of the publication. But an interesting phenomenon might be observed here: data-sets (often in combination with models and parameters) are becoming more important themselves and can sometimes be seen as the primary intellectual output of the research. Publishing and preserving data-sets should therefore seriously be considered. This will especially be the case if the …

Embedding Research And Learning In Libraries., William R. Maes
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The theme of this conference is “Embedding Libraries in Research and Learning.” While this is critical within the context of the new technologies and new service expectations of scholars and students it is also important that research and learning remain embedded in libraries if they are to be an integral part of the scholarly fabric of our institutions. With continuing economic pressures on scholarly institutions and the desire to use the new technologies to change established and expensive processes and facilities, the threat to the physical academic library has perhaps never been greater This paper discusses why the physical library …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
A challenge for educators is to fuse the learning of information literacy to an academic education in such a way that the outcome is systematic and sustainable learning for students. This challenge can be answered through long-term commitment to information literacy education bound to organisation-wide, renewable strategic planning and driven through systemic reform. This paper explores the process of reforming information literacy education in an academic environment, drawing on the experiences of one Australian university which has undertaken the implementation of a strategic, systemic approach to information literacy learning and teaching.
